they both should have been sacked imho

OP posts:
LucyJones · 05/05/2006 11:14

I think that's the right decision. I don't see why someone should be sacked for having an affair. Loads of people have affairs and don't get sacked

pupuce · 05/05/2006 11:15

What about Maragret Beckett's promotion!!!!!!!!!!
Is Jack Straw getting demoted?

welshmum · 05/05/2006 11:16

Yep, Jack Straw becomes Leader of the House.
Beckett only 'A bit foreign Secretary' Geof Hoon will be Europe Minister - with Cabinet seat. Bit of a change there for civil servants in the Foreign Office

JoolsToo · 05/05/2006 11:19

Lots of people DO get sacked for having affairs too - armed forces officers for example.

It's the hypocrisy of the man that gets me. Never slow with his digs about other folk found with their pants down - now he's screaming 'Private matter, private matter!' he makes me sick!

and what happended to all the reasons Charles Clarke must stay?

If Tony had that much confidence in Clarke he'd still be Home Office minister sorting out the mess

My DH said something a bit different regards this the other day, the Clarke thingy. He said, 'they should have left him there because he will be incredibly careful (as in once bitten twice shy) what his dept. does in future. Now they will bring in a new one who will make new mistakes or echo clarkes one'

As I was on a total rant at the time about how he should hang his head in shame and be sacked, I thought about it and I sort of agree. The new one will make new mistakes. Does that make sense?

UCM · 05/05/2006 12:23

Oh and FWIW, I think that John Prescott is a buffoon and cannot understand how he is in office unless he has something on Tony. His wife looks like a bad version of Joan Collins, not that it's a reason to go out shagging, but..... mutton/lamb

Nightynight · 05/05/2006 13:08

hes there to appease old labour isnt he?

the whole lineup is not particularly appealing.

beansprout · 05/05/2006 13:10

Has a woman ever had one of the big three posts (home sec, foreign sec, chancellor) before?

TinyGang · 05/05/2006 13:30

UCM..it said in something I was reading recently that JP's wife was an Elizabeth Taylor look-alikeShock

The press always turns wronged mp's wives into wonderous creatures. Remember the 'fragrant' Mary Archer?!Grin hahaha!

yeahinaminute · 05/05/2006 14:14

And that meddlesome creature Ruth Kelly gets to look after communities and local government .... Please God No
Beansprout when you say HAD any of the big three posts - you're not meaning that in the biblical sense are you ??!!!

donnie · 05/05/2006 14:42

so now Madge and Condi can get pally over cocktails and moan about their crap male bosses!

pity about Straw though,I do still like him although DH calls him a spineless weakling!

niceglasses · 05/05/2006 14:45

Oh I quite like Pauline Prescott....admire some of the stuff shes been through.

The reshuffle is just far to little to late to coin a cliche. Blairs days are defo numbered. Clarke obv didn't think he needed to go. Oh dear. I wish Blair would just plan out when he is going.

SenoraPostrophe · 05/05/2006 14:49

god who runs the uk? the politicians or the damn press?

charles clarke (who I don't like btw) gets sacked because some foreign prisoners weren't deported when they were released over the last 10 years . He hasn't been home sec for 10 years and after the initial frenzy it transpired that actually the number who were released without deportation being considered when it should have been was only about 60. something that should be fixed, but not a mega scandal imo - these are people who have served their sentence after all.

But the tories, the lib dems (to their shame - they are supposed to be the party that doesn't react to such things with a xenophobic knee jerk reaction) and the press (including the bbc) are carrying on like people have got away with murder. I think it's disgusting, and was probably orchestrated by someone in opposition to garner the undecided-but-maybe-the-BNP vote at the elections.

and as for prezza - why the hel should he be sacked for shagging his secretary? does it affect his ability to do the job?

SenoraPostrophe · 05/05/2006 14:51

beansprout - I think you'll find there are 4 big posts, and yes, a woman has held one. unfortunately.

donnie · 05/05/2006 14:52

yike, yes the big THATCH!!!! how could we forget!!!!

motherinferior · 05/05/2006 14:53

Quite, SP.

niceglasses · 05/05/2006 14:54

I don't have an issue with Prescott but I think he had muted he wanted to go anyway didn't he?

I sort of agree with you Senora, but I think Blair just couldn't afford it all - hence your comment re the press I think.

Its unfortunate it now smacks of the dying days of the tories, rightly or wrongly and just think its time for Brown.

expatinscotland · 05/05/2006 14:54

there goes the neighbourhood . . .

Uwila · 05/05/2006 15:50

Prescott should be sacked because he was sleeping with some whom he directly supervises (oh gross, I'm gonna be sick). This is a sackable offense in any large company, and it should be in the government too.

If he was off haveing an affair with someone not connected to his work, then I could possibly accept that it was personal (although I do believe that people in high up government office should be held to higher standard). But, not when it is his own subordinate.

Activity such as this really crouches on sexual harassment for me. It should not be tolerated. It paves the way for women (or men) to sleep their way up the ladder rather than working their way up the ladder.

JoolsToo · 05/05/2006 15:52

agree Uwila

OP posts:
Uwila · 05/05/2006 15:54

Hi Jools Grin

SenoraPostrophe · 05/05/2006 15:55

is it a sackable offence in any large company? how come you hear of so many people who run off with their secretary/colleague then?

Uwila · 05/05/2006 16:01

Oh gosh, is it not sackable generally? It should be. It is at my company for sure. Now, whether people look the other way and don't enforce it I can't say. But, I really think it should be enforced starting with Prescott.

Uwila · 05/05/2006 17:28

Oh no. I killed it..... Sad
