by officers on Operation Yewtree. Where's it going to end? Is anyone not a sexual offender?*

  • Yes I know plenty aren't.

What I want to know.... after all the revelations about phone-hacking and press intrusion into personal lives.... is how editors decide which information to print, which people to pursue and trash, and which ones to leave well alone.

For example. Jeremy Thorpe was Liberal leader from 1967 to 1976 and the subject of a very public scandal about his sexuality (and an accompanying charge of conspiracy to murder) which ended his political career. At the same time we now discover Liberal MP Cyril Smith was suspected of abusing children and yet nothing was ever printed. Both prominent politicians but one seemingly fair game and the other left alone.

Ditto with other contemporaries. Why trash Frank Bough for visiting prostitutes but leave Savile to fight another day... or any of these other names from the same era?

Nancy66 · 06/12/2012 14:40

the 80 year old was not named and shouldn't be hinted at on here

whistlestopcafe · 06/12/2012 14:41

Posters naming or hinting at suspects who have not been named are foolish and deserve to get their arses sued.

FivesGoldNorks · 06/12/2012 14:42

You're right nncy sorry. I just suddenly felt like I was catching up

nameswinger1 · 06/12/2012 14:47

This is rather exciting. I was so sure Saville's clown face was going to manifest the newspapers for months to come with interest from the public slowly dwindling for the bigger picture.
I believe there is still a wall of silence but here's hoping the arrest of Max Clifford will unleash an apocalypse and rattle some bigger cages.

ooh what other thread?

MrsjREwing · 06/12/2012 15:03

in the news, the newsnight, exposure etc thread.

LoopsInHoops · 06/12/2012 15:03

ah yes of course.

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 15:05

No, not foolish, thanks Hmm I had no idea he had a SI until this thread. I've asked for my post with his name in to be removed. But please note, it was a post saying I don't believe he's a bad'un.

bunchamunchycrunchycarrots · 06/12/2012 15:05

Sky news helicopter currently showing 'activity' at Clifford's home suggesting they are searching his property. I suspect that might well be a huge part of why this action has been taken by the police, on top of whatever allegations have been made about 'sexual offences'. Can you imagine what Clifford has in his filing cabinets, especially under 'recent enquiries'...

LoopsInHoops · 06/12/2012 15:06

encrypted, surely?

EdithWeston · 06/12/2012 15:12

You can only be arrested if there are grounds to suspect you of an offence. If the police just want to interview you because you might hold information relevant to an investigation, there is no need to arrest.

Of course, the interview following arrest might totally dispel whatever gave grounds for arrest, or more enquiries may follow (likely to be bailed ending further enquiries) or you might be charged with an offence. Unless you have a reliable crystal ball, there is no telling what might follow this reported arrest.

But please note, it was a post saying I don't believe he's a bad'un.

What do you expect a 'bad'un' to act and look like? Many pedophiles are both popular with children and adults, appear trustworthy and respectable. Has good standing in the community.

This is why abused children are sometimes not believed and why it's also so hard to successfully convict the bastards perpetrators.

headfairy · 06/12/2012 15:47

They haven't said whether the offences cited in the Max Clifford arrest are anything to do with children... just sexual offences.

I'm sure KrisMoose is aware of that nameswinger, as am I.

I think people are surprised at seeing his name mentioned in these threads, for right or wrong reasons.

BornInACrossFireHurricane · 06/12/2012 16:30

Also, yes to MC having information- maybe he'll now be co operative with the police on this? Not sure where he stands legally

KrisMoose · 06/12/2012 16:32

I am aware of that, nameswinger :) Cheers, Born.

I wouldn't be suprised to see some well-known people committing suicide if he is actually charged,he knows a helluva lot of secrets that could destroy a helluva lot of people.

I'd imagine there are quite a few celebrities either A)bricking it in case he starts spilling or B)celebrating that their arch enemy is in the shits.

I have to say though ....and I'm well aware of the 'We Believe' ethos around here....he would be a prime target for anyone wanting to make unfounded, malicious accusations.

I don't think that people should be named unless they are at least charged. It know doesn't matter if he is completely proven innocent or not, there will always now be a shadow of doubt in some peoples minds.

And while he wouldn't be my favourire person by any stretch of the imagination,I don't think that's fair.

MrsjREwing · 06/12/2012 17:12

Who is out of the UK, leaving the UK? and are they in countries without extradition agreements?

PottedShrimp · 06/12/2012 17:31

There will be nobody left in showbiz apart from Brucie soon

InkleWinkle · 06/12/2012 17:46

Potted that's exactly what I was about to post Smile

MrsjREwing · 06/12/2012 17:49

I think celeb hospital visits etc will cease too.

Louis met Savile and Clifford, wish I had watched.
