For all those that dislike the "normalising" bottle feeding.

Okay, so why would you interview this woman and show her picture (and give Avent a free advert) when the article is on breastfeeding?

Could it be because the last time the paper showed a breast (Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfuntion) they got loads of complaints?

Okay, shall I call the paper and ask to speak to the person responsible and point it out - or shall I just pull my head in. I am moderately interested in whether Kamala whatsherface bottle fed, has no children or whatever.

Also what she described at day 4 was normal, normal, normal - and she never rang the plunket helpline in the middle of the night to be told that - so er, really what is the point of her at all.

absolutely! write to the paper and complain!
i even have my post natal notes in the boy's memory boxes and one of them says ' baby feeding frequently as is normal for day 4'( or words to that effect!)
God - how can you give up as quickly as that?

and half an hour to an hour? luxury sheer luxury! i remember feeding about 3 hours at a time this early on!!!

I'm not writing in, as I don't want to end up on letters to the editor - bad for business as I work with preschoolers and babies.

I am now inventing conspiracy theories - such as actually Plunkets major sponsor is Heinz Wattie and what do they make - erm formula. So even though the article is about breastfeeding Plunket gave them a bottle feeding mother to photograph and interview.

threebob ... definitely complain. That is one of the most useless articles ever. First it says paid leave is responsible for longer breastfeeding and then goes into a glowing "I never looked back" thing by the bottlefeeding lady. I don't see the point in the article really.
Except maybe they tried to 'balance' it to avoid complaints from bottlefeeding mums who might feel bad if the article was a breast is best one?
I dunno ... crap article anyway.

ermmm - well I "gave up" after just 5 days - and that was with DS2 - after I'd already spent 14 months successfully breastfeeding DS1.........

Would a good analogy be - it's like an article about rugby and then interview and photographing a soccer player.

Or calling a scuba diver in to comment on water skiing.

Plunket have released their statistics (which are flawed anyway as they stop asking at 6 months) and the journalist has decided to comment on the best way to get to Finland.

Okay, impatient thing that I am I considered ringing someone else at the paper, but I thought I would read it again and erm, well it actually does have a flow:

Plunket figures
Comment from Plunket
Comment from College of Midwives
WHO recommendations
then a lady who chose not to (but 7 others did, backing up the statistics) but did mix feed for 5 weeks (Plunket do take figures for these but they weren't in the article)
Then the topical bit about the Plunket Line closing.

So really the only bit I object to and find totally pointless is the photo (and I feel they could have tried a little harder to find a breastfeeder to comment too)

But why did they photograph and interview a woman who doesn't back up the stats or the positive effect of paid parental leave and the baby-friendly initiative?? Surely the case study should reflect the subject matter?!!

There is a flow to the article, but it's basically rubbish isn't it! Completely contradicts the point of the headline, and there's a subliminal message of 'babies are fed with bottles though' as it's yet another pic of bottle feeding rather than breastfeeding.

7 out of 8 seems a really good ratio - why on earth aren't they quoting from the 7 to shed some light on why the rates have gone up.
