Why has Charlie been arrested?

It's funny how different folks can look at the same facts and draw different conclusions.
A couple have made comments about Cameron. I think that it is good that it is happening on his watch - even if he is conveniently out of the country at the time. Blair would never in a million years stand up to News International.Hmm

LineRunner · 13/03/2012 22:39

Blair started it. Cameron's reaping his deserved whirlwind, though.

Hassled · 13/03/2012 22:41

I think you're absolutely right that Blair would never have stood up to NI, but in fairness I haven't seen any signs of Cameron standing up to them either. That isn't what's happening now.

lazyhazydaisy · 14/03/2012 00:13

When RB announced to the NoTW employees that the paper was closing, didn't she make some sort of crypic remark about how they wouldn't understand until twelve months later?

'Charlie Brooks... had been looking forward to attending the Cheltenham racing festival. Writing in a column published in the Daily Telegraph, he said that, 'the happiest moment of my year', was about 3 hours before the first race...'

Which would have been 10.30 this morning.

Any more twitter jokes?

I do think that something very bad involving NI and the Met is going to come out concerning the murder of that private investigator.

LineRunner · 14/03/2012 08:52

You mean Daniel Morgan?

VivaLeBeaver · 14/03/2012 10:10

Yep.

lazyhazydaisy · 14/03/2012 10:31

Last time RB was arrested it was on a Sunday, at a civilised hour, and by appointment. This arrest must have come as a complete surprise. (Especially on the the first day of Cheltenham. Is anyone going to Cheltenham to eavesdrop on gossip?

I hope she writes a book in prison.

Am i the only person who thinks Charlie Brooks bears a very close resembelance to Murdoch , without the hair obviously

frumpet · 14/03/2012 10:41

Doh , i mean Rebekah looks like Murdoch

teejwood · 14/03/2012 13:23

ah, thought this thread might be here Wink
viva if there is a link between brooks and the morgan case it could only be something like covering up/not disclosing information she obtained a long time after the fact. Morgan was killed before Brooks joined the Murdoch empire iirc.

lazy i love your phrasing in the last line of your last post Grin
btw - Charlie is at Cheltenham today, apparently, but no sign of his missus.

lazyhazydaisy · 14/03/2012 17:01

Maximum sentence for perverting the course of justice is Life.

It shouldn't take that long; she has the most wonderful plot already.

And the potential readership would include Eastenders fans, racing fans (Babbling Brooks used to be called 'Looks Brooks' but I haven't found a photograph of him when he was younger to back that up) and everyone involved in the phone hacking malarkey (enormous cast of celebrities, politicians, tragic innocent victims, with Hugh Grant and Steve Coogan clearly after blood).

He was involved in some scandal of great interest to the racing world (yawn) when he ran off with some jockey's wife.

And everyone who has a mild objection to Rupert Murdoch and all he stands for.

And Prince Charles, Tony Blair, David Cameron and all of her other friends could visit her.

The intriguing link with the Morgan case runs allegedly through Rees to Coulson to Cameron, as published in various articles in the Guardian.

The questions of 'Who knew what?' are facing a re-appraisal, in the light of the fact that previous denials are now apparently and allegedly being challenged by the DPP.

Cameron employed Couslon. That is a fact.

LineRunner · 14/03/2012 19:03

(He employed Coulson too...)

Northernlurker · 14/03/2012 19:13

I was a bit worried about the baby. Rather hoping Rebecca does serious time BUT the baby is only a couple of months old. Won't do her any good to have her primary caregivers banged up.

SerialKipper · 14/03/2012 19:16

No no nooo! teej, tis much juicier than that.

Morgan was killed before Brooks joined News International, yes, but it was 2002 when Dept Chief Supt Dave Cook was put in charge of the re-opened case - so Brooks was editor of NotW when it conducted surveillance on him. If the surveillance was related to the investigation, it could have been a very active role in attempting to pervert the course of justice.

SerialKipper · 14/03/2012 19:19

Det Chief Supt Dave Cook

blackoutthesun · 14/03/2012 19:49

also Daniel Morgan was business partners with Jonathan Rees, Rees went on to being paid £150,000 a year from notw. after serving a prison sentance, Rees was re-employed by Andy Culson

it is thought by the Morgan family that Daniel was murdered because he was about to blow the lid on police payment from the press.

teejwood · 14/03/2012 22:47

oh, of course, thanks for the reminder kipper and blackout - the trial collapsed a couple of years back! that is a whole can of worms.

fwiw - i think the whole "in a year's time, you'll see why we had to do this" line was about the (at that time) projected launch of sun on sunday. i have no doubt brooks, thurlbeck et al believed they were teflon-coated.

speaking of which, i see thurlbeck has been arrested for interfering with/threatening a witness Hmm

dapplegrey · 15/03/2012 15:38

"Cameron's really uncomfortably close to all this"

Were previous leaders any better? Blair is Godfather to one of Murdoch's children and didn't Sarah Brown have a 'slumber party' at which Rebekah was a guest?

LineRunner · 15/03/2012 15:56

Like I said, wind and whirlwind. It's Old Testament.

LineRunner · 15/03/2012 16:45

In fact, was it not Alistair Campbell who sowed the wind, or at least a fairly big gust of it?

NickettyNacketty · 16/03/2012 13:13

Wow. Wheels within wheels.

LineRunner · 16/03/2012 21:39

Wheels on fire.
