I can't say much because the press have been snooping, knocking on doors. But two of the people lived just round the corner from me. I just can't believe it. I'm always horrified when this happens but it does hit home when it's so close.

Am shocked that he had so many firearms legally. Am just shocked full stop. You feel so useless when something like this happens? I'm sure the locals will rally round and try to support those who are left.

Dp got up for work and was speechless for ages when I told him, don't think it's sunk in even now.

He was a taxi driver. He used the guns for hunting.

Such a horrible tragedy. Those poor women.

Apparently he had told the Police before he was going to harm himself...which begs the question why was he allowed to remain having the license(s)?

I can understand people are going to feel sad if they knew and loved him. If my close friend or loved one did something so horrific out of the blue yes I'd be devastated. But they could at least wait or do it in private?

I have a gun licence and I thought that if there was anything like a threat to harm yourself or others you wouldn't get it renewed - or would get it confiscated?

Having said that, I have a licence because I want to keep my late fathers gun - I've never used it, I just don't want to sell it. And when he died and I informed them and applied for the licence they did a half arsed check of the gun safe, didn't mention that the ammo was not in the safe or that I couldn't find one of the keys . Surely the fact that I had inherited a gun and couldn't account for the second key to the safe should have raised an eyebrow at least - but they wern't interested. The key turned up, but they still don't know that!

Thanks OldLady, I hope that this might lead to a rethink about the reasons that gun licences are granted.

I'm not normally in favour of knee jerk reactions to one off events but how can anyone say they need to keep 6 guns in their house for a hobby. What kind of hunting needs such firepower?

When I first saw this story earlier today on BBC news on my phone they said the police have made a voluntary referral to the inependant police complaints commission.

Sorry, I meant Durham Police in my previous post. I caught a bit of a phone about this earlier and people who shoot for sport seem to be a selfish bunch who put their convenience above everything else.

Whilst these type of events are thankfully rare they often involve multiple murders that just wouldn't have happened without the guns.

Don't quite understand the preoccupation with the number of guns owned. I've got a kitchen full of very sharp knives.... if I went nuts and stabbed the family would people wonder why I had more than one? Clearly this man was in murderous mood and just one gun would do plenty of damage. Seen calls for greater psychiatric assessments but wonder would that be effective. The cabbie that rampaged through the Lakes a year or two ago was equally deadly but everyone afterwards described him in terms of 'a nice bloke' 'kept himself to himself'.

If they didn't go snooping you wouldn't know that it had happened then you'd have nothing to talk about.

In all these "shootings" there have been reasons why these people should have had their weapons removed and licences revoked long before the incident occurred. Guns held by responsible licence holders do not kill people, Murderers do. Gun laws in this country are really stringent. If those responsible for checking that safeguards are in place are not doing their job properly then they should investigated. Law abiding citizens with guns should not be made to pay.
