Little girl killed in China

I'm sitting crying having watched a video of a little girl who was hit by two vans in Beijing...apparently 18 people just walked or drove past without stopping to help.

She was 2 Sad

I can't bear it, I'm posting to say unless you are feeling very strong, don't watch the video. It was on the ITV news a while back and is on you tube ofr those who want to see it. But I wish I hadn't.

I heard it on the news, missed the video they showed of the people walking past and looked it up on you tube...I imagined people just hadn't seen her, it was a busy road perhaps...no, it wasn't and plenty of people saw her.

I posted as I was so upset by it and wanted to diffuse the intensity of my reaction by sharing it...I couldn't bear it.

the issue on the news was why no one had helped.

I couldn't understand it so went to watch it.

I wish I hadn't...I wanted to say, 1. I am really upset, did anyone else see this and wasn't it horrible Sad

  1. Don't watch it if you can avoid it, if they show it on the news again for example. It will make you feel awful, well it made me feel awful.

althouh that article says she was critically ill in intensive care not that she had died.

It's pretty shocking that so many people walked past and did nothing. Shock Sad

It was being turned into a political thing, you know, are the Chinese heartless or just afraid of being sued sort of thing

Just to clarify - she hasn't died. I live in China, and the girl's mum just posted confirmation that she's still alive but in intensive care. It's in Guangdong, not Beijing.

Such a sad situation, but sadly very common in China.

it was posted somewhere else that she had died but I'm glad if it was untrue.

When you say it's common...do you mean this sort of incident exactly? Why do you think people didn't help?

why the hell shouldn't she?

i saw a horrid news story a while back and it really, really got to me. i had no-one here to talk to about it and needed to just have a chat with people and talk over stuff.... wtf is wrong with that?

I tried not to make my title too upsetting, well, no more than it had to be

I did (perhap mistakenly) think it would have affected other MNers badly and they might take comfort from a thread to share the sense of horror and sadness,

but maybe it doesn't work that way.

It's called bystander effect. Has been documented before, but is always upsetting.

i hadn't seen it, but if I had i would have been surprised not to see it mentioned on here tbh, people do often post about news stories like this

horrendous. i totally get why you posted. i haven't seen the footage and dont want to but i imagine it has a huge effect on you and you are probably in a form of shock from seeing it. it's ok to want to talk it through with people. strangers or not.

hoping the little girl has as much of a recovery as possible.

I do get that bystander apathy exists but I really can't think that in this country people would ignore a toddler who'd been hit by a van. But why would china be different? So maybe I'm wrong and it could happen here.

Having spent time in that region I am not in least surprised. That province is about to be host to the world's largest city, over £60million people, when the two large cities merge. Life is cheap there.

yeah it's kind of shocking that it's on yourtube... although (not wanting to make too many vast generalisations) China isn't renowned for it's truthful reporting, and I think sometimes people WANT these shocking things seen by other people so that the outside world knows what it going on in there.

I wonder how it first became common knowledge and how our papers started reporting on it

i am no expert on the matter, but I do recall seeing pictures of dead baby girls in a gutter in China before.
No idea if it's the same reasoning behind it, but that was basically because girls are worthless in China. you get one chance to have a child, and people want a boy....
maybe this is a different thing entirely, but for a long, long time the life of a female child really hasn't been something people have cared much about in China
