I'm sitting crying having watched a video of a little girl who was hit by two vans in Beijing...apparently 18 people just walked or drove past without stopping to help.

She was 2 Sad

I can't bear it, I'm posting to say unless you are feeling very strong, don't watch the video. It was on the ITV news a while back and is on you tube ofr those who want to see it. But I wish I hadn't.

RIP little soul

interestingly, in germany if you pass an accident and don't help (if you have any first aid training whatsoever) you can be sued.

cultural perspectives differ so hugely.

Interesting that the only person who stopped to pick her up was so poor (a rubbish collector (scavenger?) that she perhaps had nothing to lose - no money that could be taken from her?

Possible. But also possible that over and above the lack of interest in chasing her for payment...humanity often shines through. Even in systems that inadvertantly or deliberatly try to stifle it.

About 2 decades ago there was a fire in a factory in Thailand. The manager had security lock all the doors to stop fleeing workers stealing stuff as they got out.

Obviously that meant a lot of people died or suffered terrible injuries needlessly.

Just when you feel like you are losing all hope for the human race, in moments like that, you also see the best of us. People died that day taking incredible risks to get the women in there out.

You have to hold on to that, look at how and why people become emotionally disengaged from awfulness and be grateful for the few that just can't and act for the greater good anyway to remind us what humanity is supposed to look like.

And remind yourself that you shouldn't assume you'd be one of the "heros" and stand in judgement ofmthose who weren't.

Cos that road can lead to a seriously painful reassessement of who you thought you were should you ever get put to the test.

This is so upsetting and unbelievable that this happens anywhere in the World. This little girl is brain dead and her life support may have to be turned off. I have heard lots of things regarding China, skinning animals alive etc. and I am trying not to think that every person who lives here has such little regard for human/animal life. The thing that stuck in my head was the woman who came to lift her did so like she was lifting a piece of meat off the ground and not a child she just dragged her by the arms like a rag doll. She could have at least lifted her in her arms. I was upset by that and I cannot believe that they didn't see her in the middle of the road although it does look dimly lit. Poor, poor little girl. Shocking...so so sad.

It was on the news this morning that she had died. Her parently reportedly hadn't been to visit her as it would be 'too upsetting'. How we treat ur children and those in need says a lot about the type of society we are, and the fact that so many people turned their heads speaks volumes - not just one or two people but 18.

OK, it I was out with DS and saw this I would get him away from such a traumatic sight but I am such a busybody I would get help - I can't believe no-one even had a mobile to call an ambulance or doctor.

I hope this does change laws and attitudes but fear that it won't. In a country that had the scandal of the fake baby powdered milk where babies died and corrypt manufacturer was executed, I fear not.
