DD wants to go to Camden. We were suppose to be going up to Yorkshire tomorrow,but dd wants to cancel to "put London back together again"

I do hope that the brilliant communities working together to clean up with give us something to be proud of, and show everyone that the scumbag criminals are in the majority.

Can children help or would it be too scary? I have an 11 and 9 year old who are so angry, but I would like to channel that anger into doing something positive.

DD is nearly 14,and we live 5 mins from Camden (N4),so I think she feels personally aggrieved* ...as teens often do Smile

Site seems to be down at the moment probably due to being inundated but what a great idea. Show the thugs that sense of community which is needed right now.

I think there is nothing wrong with showing our dcs' community spirit SomekindofSpanish. Just make sure the area you are going to clean is safe,I would hope the organisers have checked that out before arranging rendezvous'.Smile

Organisers have talked to emergency services and local authorities (for clearance and to get guidance on safety). IIRC Clapham is still closed off and being treated until a crime scene, certainly until at least late morning, but cleanup is underway at the other sites. And it's expected that there will be a need for more cleanup at the private shops and businesses once they have had the insurance loss adjustors round, so likely to be an ongoing process.

If children already know what happened / saw news footage I think it could be helpful, and also show them community pulling together for something good / that most people are kind and helpful.

I would go but not sure it will be practical/safe with baby in sling and don't have anyone to leave DD2 with. Also local site is Claham which (as above) isn't ready for cleanup yet.

Fantastic! All community leaders should be out and encouraging local citizens to do the same. Hard decisions need to come from the top now, but nothing can be more powerful than the law abiding, decent families reclaiming their streets from these thugs who would terrorise their neighbours for a pair of trainers or carton of fags!

Sorry if already mentioned but apparently Croydon Council are taking names and numbers of volunteers and organising a clean up, you can call on 0208 726 6000. They will ring back when they are ready for people to go and help clear up.

I wish I could get to London to help. I used to live in Croydon and one ds still lives there and the ds lives on Lavender Hill - 100 yards from the police station. My thoughts are with you all.

Me, husband and the kids went to the "clean up" at the Bullring this morning. We were the first there, ended up being around 100 people, some speeches some media some councillors... more a show of solidarity than actual cleaning but glad we went. City centre had been patched up and more or less back to business as usual before we arrived, except for Carphone Warehouse, Adidas and Richer Sounds, which were boarded up. DS1 did a stirling job picking up fag ends with a litter gripper.
