Read the full article in the guardian. It says a lot about mens shallowness. Unfornuately think there are plenty of men around who do think of women in theese ways.

Witchycat · 22/10/2005 19:56

I read it in the Guardian too. I thought it posed an interesting question: Why is there apparently no protest whatsoever about this patronising, degrading crap? (well it didn't put it quite like that, but you know what I mean, but the article failed to give any real answers.

Do women really think we've achieved equality so there's no need to be bothered by the lad's mags or do we just think it's all "harmless fun"

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 22/10/2005 20:01

yes I read it too. those magazines just turn my stomach. young women are colluding with this, aren't they? I think it is incredibly sad that we as a society don't get more worked up about it.

Witchycat · 22/10/2005 20:07

It's a difficult one to protest about though isn't it because the instant you say anything these days you're labelled as a 'stroppy feminsist' and people stop listening (women as well as men).

Personally, I'm well known as a stroppy feminist because I just can't keep quiet when something sexist annoys me but I do find it more than a bit odd that so many women seem completely unconcerned about the semi pornographic images and the way women are potrayed in those magazines.

Janos · 22/10/2005 21:23

I absolutely hate these magazines, In fact..

I HATE the way that women collude with them.
I HATE the way women are portrayed in them.
I HATE the way they pass off rampant misogyny as 'a bit of a laugh'..

In short..they really p*ss me off. Can you tell ? So count me in as a fellow stroppy feminist!

Witchycat · 22/10/2005 21:27

Thanks Janos. Was beginning to think there are only a handful of us. Even on MN.

Blandmum · 22/10/2005 21:32

Count me in with your band as well. I think the way they protray women is vile. And I hate the way some woman say 'it is all just a larf' is vacuous at best and coluding in mysogeny at its worst.

In fact I also dislike the anti feminist backlash that seems to be 'trendy' amoung some young women today. But I suppose that is what comes of being an old fart and remembering what it was like in the 'good old days' before women's lib

JanH · 22/10/2005 21:33

When you say "if", MT...

Blandmum · 22/10/2005 21:34

Who was it then???

startingtobehalloweenylover · 22/10/2005 21:48

hmm but there are girly mags which portray men in the same way!

Janos · 22/10/2005 21:53

You're welcome, Witchycat. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who thinks like this as well. I'm glad there's more than one of us at least!

Oh, and martianbishop, hear, hear for your comment about the 'good old days'. I know they weren't that good - and I'm only 31.

In fact there's interesting article about it here

TurQorTreat · 22/10/2005 21:53

There may be the odd girls mag that portrays men as totty but not with the underlying hatred and contempt for women that came up in some of the examples in that article. Totally depressing IMO.

bubble99 · 22/10/2005 21:54

I'm in. I hate that women collude with this damaging crap and, by doing so,perpetuate the view that this shit is OK or as someone else has said 'just a larf'.

It seems to be done out of greed and the pathetic need for their 'fifteen minutes.' I hope they enjoy the money.

Society in the nineties seemed to have hit a comfortable balance. Leering builders were viewed as unacceptable by both sexes (I know that's a poor example of gender equality) but now we seem to be back to square one. And now women will tell you to 'lighten up' if you criticise these 'lads mags.'

How Abi Titmuss can go from being a respected professional, working in an acute area of medicine, to a thong-wearing clone is beyond me. Oh yes. I forgot. It pays better.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 22/10/2005 21:55

hmm i dunno.. there seems to be a lot of guy-bashing about

they're often portrayed as stupid, only thinking about one thing, good for a one night stand and nothing else

have seen articles on guess what country the penis is from, how ugly men are good for sex because they're all desperate etc etc

bossykate · 22/10/2005 21:55

i loved this article. anyone who thinks we are living in a "post-feminist" world where women have achieved equality is dreaming. these mags are foul rubbish.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 22/10/2005 21:55

btw... not saying that that makes the lads mags ok... just that it does work both ways!

Janos · 22/10/2005 21:56

startingtobehalloweenylover - which ones do you think portray men in the same way? I don't think there are, or maybe I just don't read them.

bossykate · 22/10/2005 21:56

it works both ways? you mean women have been duped into turning into fake lads?

startingtobehalloweenylover · 22/10/2005 21:57

argh god... i think it's company? (may be ewrong though) my ex boss used to read it.. vile magazine
erm.. more used to be pretry awful

bubble99 · 22/10/2005 22:00

SL. Those 'men-bashing' articles are just as foul. I don't know any women who enjoy them. Also, I've never seen a whole magazine dedicated to pictures of men accompanied by 'whose todger is this?' articles. Unlike ladsmags of which there are many.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 22/10/2005 22:01

you'd be surprised bubble!

i don't like the lads mags OR the man-bashing mags...
what's the point?

bubble99 · 22/10/2005 22:03

And of course, SL, I agree that most men think these mags are crap too. Unfortunately, the w***s (literally ) who buy them don't.

Janos · 22/10/2005 22:04

Well I've never read them..honestly

If they are printing comments like 'men are good for one night stands and nothing else' they deserve to be chucked straight in the bin, frankly!

bubble99 · 22/10/2005 22:13

Because if we ban 'teen' magazines which tell 12 year olds how to 'turn boys on.' We should also ban ladsmags with articles like 'ugly girls are always up for it.'

monkeytrousers · 23/10/2005 15:00

Has anyone read 'Overloaded' by Imelda Whelehan? It's on this subject and is devastating.
