Apparently Libby Purves is going to be on in a minute to give a referee's ringside account of this morning's scrap!

Joan? Cod? could it be?

monkeytrousers · 20/10/2005 18:10

I found it a bit odd too that a man could lecture a woman on aspects of oppression, as he said he did to his 1st wife, regardless of the fact she was white. There was no irony there.

aloha · 20/10/2005 18:14

"Women are the niggers of the world". The only sensible thing Yoko Ono ever said.

Caligula · 20/10/2005 18:18

"Rivers, being typically flippant, extolled the virtues of mixed-race children, suggesting that by being half white and half black, they were part of everything, at which point Howe accused her of having a problem with the word "black" "

This is really bad reporting. That is simply not how it happened. And he didn't "accuse" her. His tone was ironic, imo.

Caligula · 20/10/2005 18:18

Yes it's amazing that of all the crap Yoko's ever spouted, she did actually once get something right!

Blu · 20/10/2005 18:28

I agree with Caligula - to me it sounded as if she was indeed being flippant and faceatious about race ('bored' etc) and he responded in an ironic, humourous way, and she went berserk with lots of personal abuse.

aloha · 20/10/2005 18:30

I do find it thoroughly irritating though that he was clearly a worse than useless parent for a big chunk of his son's life - basically abandoning him - then (if what I read is half way accurate) - putting all his son's problems down to race, which is a nifty and convenient way of getting himself off the hook, I suspect.

katierocket · 20/10/2005 18:31

yes I thought that aloha, surprised anyone else could fit in the studio alongside that huge chip of his.

Caligula · 20/10/2005 18:31

Oh yes, it's very tiresome, and I imagine that that was what irritated her so much about him, which is why she reacted so strongly.

Blu · 20/10/2005 18:33

Outrageous parent, yes, but interesting (even if you don't agree with him or like his style) in his professional life.

I don't think reacting to racism (which is still undoubtedly alive and well and living in Britain, however bored Joan Rivers feels about it)is having 'a chip'.

CountessCatbertula · 20/10/2005 18:34

I listened to this, this morning. Didn't hear all of it, but mostly the bit where she yelled

"Don't you DARE accuse me of being racist"
"Don't you DARE"
"Don't you DARE"
"Don't you DARE" (ad nauseum)
"Son of a bitch"

She is a bit OTT... But I guess that's her "thing" isn't it?

Normally those Libby Purves chats are soooo jolly nice and refined

monkeytrousers · 20/10/2005 18:35

Yes, she did go off it a bit...a bit too much perhaps...

monkeytrousers · 20/10/2005 18:37

I always though it was Sandy Tolysvig too (sp)

Shows how much I'm usually listening

Blandmum · 20/10/2005 18:37

In answer to moondog, Darcus would seem to be a bit of a professional sperm donor

monkeytrousers · 20/10/2005 18:39

Is that actually acredited to Ono, Aloha. Or is it like Lennon's paraphrased 'life is what you do when you're busy making other plans' which was acually...erm..I've forgotten now.

aloha · 20/10/2005 18:39

I just can't get over how annoying I find his martyred act though. All those kids, not there for any of them, one of them gets into trouble, and there he is, rubbing his hands together, oooh, a lovely chance to be on the telly. And no apparent conception that any of it might be his fault.
Aaargh.

monkeytrousers · 20/10/2005 18:39

(?)

Blandmum · 20/10/2005 18:40

And a nice chance to blame all sorts of other people for his son's misbehaviour.

elitemeetupCOD · 20/10/2005 18:41

yes the polilce made him be a criminal apprently
and he stole beacasue everyone had cool cars. we ahd somone in couirt who used that as a defence last week
he stole 800 £ as all his freinds were going out " and that"

is the son supposed to eb clever?

monkeytrousers · 20/10/2005 18:42

A fledgeling intellectual..aren't we all?

Blandmum · 20/10/2005 18:43

Not me

bosscat · 20/10/2005 18:45

oh thank god I thought I was the only one who finds his martyred act utterly tedious. I can't stand people who find something else to blame rather than accepting responsibility for themselves.

Blu · 20/10/2005 18:46

Really don't want to defend DH's parenting, or his refusal to admit that his absense was material in his son's problems, but he has done v well by some of his other kids. I used to live v close to them, his daughter is a tv producer, others have done v well indeed and he was quite involved.
Just think he has unjustly come in for more flack than he deserves over the actual programme - she was outrageous and v unprofessional!

But Libby Purves's change of subject made it all worth while!

Caligula · 20/10/2005 18:47

I think it was the most interesting Midweek I've ever heard - I usually hate that programme!

bosscat · 20/10/2005 18:49

I know, wasn't that brilliant "and now to the plant woman". Best bit of radio 4 all year.
