Another earthquake has hit Christchurch New Zealand causing extensive damage.

There is much more damage than the last big one in September and more people injured because it has happened during the working day.

Bad isnt it. There is a thread already in Living Overseas as well.

MmeLindt · 22/02/2011 05:54

Thinking of those with friends and families in NZ. Looks like his was a big one.

IntotheNittyGritty · 22/02/2011 06:27

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 22/02/2011 07:34

Phew it looks like they are still at home on north island. Will ring later to check that my uncle was at home too.

Ormirian · 22/02/2011 07:43

Dreadful Sad

Keeping fingers crossed for them all

OfflineFor30Seconds · 22/02/2011 08:05

Sad It looks devastating. Wishing all NZ families and friends well. Hope you keep safe.

BeenBeta · 22/02/2011 08:12

It looks awful. How earthquake proof are buildings in Ch Ch? Are they built with earthquakes in mind?

Some just look like the front facade fell off them and others just pancaked.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 22/02/2011 08:15

I have friends out there at the moment.
A friend from school's brother is getting married there on Friday to a girl from there so they are all out there.
Facebooking like mad this morning and thankfully they are all ok.
Such a Sad Sad thing to happen thoughts are with everyone out there.

IntotheNittyGritty · 22/02/2011 08:23

Ive just heard from someone on tv that even if the buildings had been earthquake proofed, that the shaking was over the limits and it wouldnt have made any difference.

Christchurch was never expected to have an earthquake so didnt comply a lot of the regulations

I have managed to get through to my former husband who lives near Christchurch. He is fine Smile

I have sat in Cathedral Square hundreds of times as I lived in NZ for many years.

isthismadness · 22/02/2011 09:59

It's gutting. I love chch. The cathedral was beautiful. But it is only a building I suppose. I hate to think of all those people trapped, terrified they might not get out.

We were there only a month ago and the place we stayed has been flattened, with bodies brought out. So, so sad. Such a beautiful city and lovely people. And so soon after the previous one....

LuigiB · 22/02/2011 12:18

This is my hometown Sad Sad

My family are all ok, but I don't know about other relatives, friends, old workmates.

I feel sick with shock - I am going to try and fly back next week.

Can't contact my family - they're in Parklands. Please, does anyone know how badly that area was affected? Will try overseas thread.

Just heard from our friends who live in Christhchuch, thankfully them and their bump are all safe. My thoughts are with everyone worrying about their loved ones x

DanJARMouse · 22/02/2011 14:04

My friend and her family are fine, she works in PGG though, so her workplace is now no longer. 3 colleagues currently unaccounted for.

She is in a right state (understandable) and worrying, and although its 3am there, she cant sleep.

So shocking, and all I really want to do is give her a big hug Sad

legspinner · 22/02/2011 22:39

Have just heard that the 2 univ campuses (Lincoln and Canterbury) had no fatalities or major casualties (but are obviously closed).
Also heard that 15 people just found alive in the CTV building that collapsed.
DanJarMouse so glad to hear your friend is OK, but can understand why she is totally traumatised.
