story

Michelle Mone called the police about footballer's toddler left in a car in a supermarket carpark for an hour.

I know this is often debated on mumsnet, and an hour is a long time but people actually get prosecuted?!

in defence of the parents their child was warmly dressed and they say they could see the car at all times.

Wouldn't it have been better for her to go into the supermarket and ask them to make an announcement giving the car registratio number?

Lol at two famous millionaires in Costco. What's the chance?

Agree with calling police though, I would have wanted them to question parents and give them a bit of a bollocking.

eviscerateyourmemory · 09/01/2011 21:58

She must have felt that the police were the apropriate people to call. I read that it was very cold that night, maybe that added to her concerns?

We dont know yet whether the footballer will be prosecuted, just that a report has gone to the PF.

Who?

bubbleOseven · 09/01/2011 21:59

she did the right thing calling police.

Also, having read that article, i don't believe that the father could see the baby at all times from the store.

Northernlurker · 09/01/2011 21:59

I don't understand how if Dad was nearby he didn't see her looking at the child? I can see why they didn't disturb the child but one of them should have stayed with him and kept the engine going. However warmly dressed he was that car will have got colder and colder.

Lulumaam · 09/01/2011 22:04

if the father could see the car the whole time, why not sit in the car with the engine running for warmth ? far too long to leave a child alone, if he had woken up in the dark and cold with no parents with him, the minutes to get to him would have felt so long.

an hour is a really long time, if the father was watching, he must have been freezing, unless inside , in which case, how could he see the child at all times?

thoughtless behaviour by the parents IMO and Ms Mone did just the right thing.

onimolap · 09/01/2011 22:04

The father has been charged: BBC report here.

Sorry - mistake - called in for police questioning. No word on charges.

doesmybumlookbiginthis · 09/01/2011 22:07

I know the supermarket concerned and there is no way they would be able to see child from inside. There are no windows!!

SixtyFootDoll · 09/01/2011 22:08

If the father could see the car at al times he would have noticed Michelle loitering around his car for an hour.

Good for her.
I have left my DSs in the car in the past for a quick 5 mns nipping in and out of small supemarket

But an hour in -7 is well out of order.

onimolap · 09/01/2011 22:08

Sorry again! Press Association reporting he has been charged: link to PA here.

DooinMeCleanin · 09/01/2011 22:09

If he could see the car then why was he not at all concerned about the strange woman peering in at his baby all the time and presumably trying the car doors?

AitchTwoOh · 09/01/2011 22:09

no WAY can you see a thing of the car park from that store. that's pretty bad...

DirtyMartini · 09/01/2011 22:11

An hour :(

Good for her.

Hulababy · 09/01/2011 22:11

How one earth could he see the car at all times? In order for that to be the case he'd have had to be outside the shop. If so why did he not stay with the car and baby? And how did he not notice a woman loitering near hi car - would this alone not be enough to alert him and have him return to the car to see what was going on?

amistillsexy · 09/01/2011 22:14

It says in the BBC report that the staff of the shop were also concerned about the boy.
If the staff were concerned about the baby, Mone must have informed them, but then they would have seen the footballer guy looking out the window? Surely he would have noticed them looking too?
Something not right about his story if you ask me. [Columbo emoticon].
Just popping off to get my deerstalker hat and pipe...

Boozilla · 09/01/2011 22:14

an hour???? Blimey, people have been flamed on here for leaving DCs in the car when nipping into the petrol station to pay for their petrol.

An hour????!? What complete prats.

CURLYMAMMA · 09/01/2011 22:14

I agree there is no way you could see unless you were standing at the door way of that store. In that case why not sit in the warm car, and why did he not see the commotion around his car.

ballstoit · 09/01/2011 22:15

Surely if they are millionaires they would have a reclining pushchair to put the child into?

If you were not going into the shop you would surely just sit in the car with the baby. You might be able to see the car, but doesnt mean you could hear what was happening inside it. I would have called the police too (but perhaps wouldnt have felt the need to Tweet about it Hmm)

ElizabethWakefield · 09/01/2011 22:15

They have been charged, the link is quite an old one.

Most recent one here

Having been in that carpark many times, I would say that unless he was standing outside there is no way he would have been able to see the car, and if he could see it, surely he would have gone over long before the police/paramedics arrived.

Beamur · 09/01/2011 22:16

My DP and I were shopping and on going back to our car noticed another car in the car park - not in direct view of any shops and not a supermarket car park, but one in town, with a young baby and a slightly older child left it in. We waited for about 10 minutes or so, with the car in view to see if the parents returned but they didn't. (I would have been too spineless to say anything but just wanted to keep an eye on the kids). Eventually we had to go as DP had to go and collect his own kids, but as we left we decided to call the Police who said they would send a car immediately to the car park. I don't know what happened but I was really shocked to see two such young children left unattended.

whomovedmychocolate · 09/01/2011 22:16

I would have called the police too.

Good for her.

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/01/2011 22:17

There were two parents there, remember.

If you didn't want to wake your sleeping child one of you would sit in the bloody car with them.

Tis indefensible and MM did the right thing.

TheCrackFox · 09/01/2011 22:18

I am glad he has been charged as it sends a message out. Leaving a baby in a car for an hour is neglect but it is surprising how many people do it.
