story

Michelle Mone called the police about footballer's toddler left in a car in a supermarket carpark for an hour.

I know this is often debated on mumsnet, and an hour is a long time but people actually get prosecuted?!

in defence of the parents their child was warmly dressed and they say they could see the car at all times.

Wouldn't it have been better for her to go into the supermarket and ask them to make an announcement giving the car registratio number?

Thisisanicecage - that's a disturbing read, but they do make you realise how easy it is to get distracted and forget something.

It's very different to the current news story, because it's entirely about accidental incidences. But to willingly leave your child in the car when you can't see it for more than a few seconds when popping into a shop/paying for petrol etc is not acceptable and I'm pleased that the police are looking into this. In my opinion, it is neglectful. Perhaps the footballer and his wife would benefit from some education on this point.

Costco shops are huge and not terribly full of windows.

I can't see how, if he was shopping, he could see the car at all times. If he could, then he could see the woman investigating the car and calling someone, no?

If he was waiting outside the shop, or keeping an eye out, why did he not wait in the car with the child?

She was right to call the police.

The temperature is irrelevant. Indefensible that 2 of them left a young child unattended for 1 hour.

Glasgow Costco is only good for boxes of yum yums and haribos - wonder what Michelle was buying :)

The Glasgow store has a big lean to at the front where they keep the trolleys so I don't believe for a second that he was watching the car at all times.

I agree that MM did the right thing (but I think twittering about it is a bit Hmm.

A few months ago, I had taken my 2DCs to the doctors- Both had flu, one had bad asthma resulting from the flu. They were 5 and 1 at the time. After the docs, I nipped into the local shop to pick up some calpol, and left the kids in the car- It took about 5 mins, I didn't want to spread the flu, one was sleeping etc. I spent the whole time shaking, and I cried as soon as I got back to the car. I should never have left them, and I shall never ever do it again. :(

Gandalf, I don't think five minutes is the same as an hour. Don't beat yourself up!

Aitch could well be right about 24 year old footballers not having enough life experience to have developed much common sense. Glad the police were called.

Yes, she was right to do that - it is wrong to leave a small child in the car unaccompanied. And if you are going into a shop, you will be distracted when you are browsing or paying (otherwise why would you be in a store at all?), so no way is that acceptable. And if he was so daft to take a small child out in the car without a pushchair, then he should go home to get it and come back to the store later with the sleeping child in the pushchair. It's just selfishness, stupidity, or both.

southofthethames · 11/01/2011 03:45

Not really a good idea to ask the store to tannoy the parents because the owners of the car may have left the store (or never gone in in the first place). They locked a small child in the car!! - not a rolex or a potted plant. This is a human being! And she did the right thing to stand by the car to wait for the police - not fun when it is minus 7 degrees, so stop criticising her for her actions. Charlie Mulgrew and his partner Alana are obviously only "excellent, caring parents" when it suits them and not all of the time. If you're a caring parent, you might lock the door by mistake but you go back immediately. And disappointing - not to mention astounding - to see the football team Celtic getting involved and taking their side - very few of their traditional Catholic fan base I suspect would back this player's behaviour.

The Costco is in Springburn as well, not the safest of places to leave your baby alone in a no doubt flash car.
