How horrible.

OP posts:
kittya · 07/12/2010 22:12

please god, justice will be done for that poor girl.

wannaBe · 07/12/2010 22:37

it was headline news at lunchtime, before the wiki leaks guy took it off the top spot.

If the media (bbc etc) can report on it, then it can be discussed, imho.

And if the man has hired Max Clifford, then clearly he desires press involvement. He shouldn't then be surprised when the inconsistencies in his story start to emerge, esp if someone has actually said that he was paid by the man to murder his "wife."

Appletrees · 07/12/2010 23:02

Your ho is wrong. They can report what happened in court.

They sailed close to the wind saying "everyone on the street here in the township thinks...."

Appletrees · 07/12/2010 23:05

I mean, you can't say he's guilty just because of this. You just can't.

Mumsnetters are chronic for this, MM and all that. They only lynchmobs mners deplore are the ones focussing on lone guys in macs with mobile phone cameras in playparks.

begonyabampot · 07/12/2010 23:05

of course it crossed my mind when it first happened but it's another thing to come online and openly pick over the bones of such a recent tragic incident where no-one really knows yet what happened and the guy could still be innocent and having to deal with all these offhand accusations. Makes me think of cases like the couple who committed suicide of the cliff with their already dead little boy. The public comments in the papers were horrible, everyone telling them to burn in hell and then had to turn around when the true tragic circumstances were revealed. The hate the english backpacker got thrown at her when her boyfriend was killed in the Oz outback - turns out she was innocent. I have no idea if this guy is innocent or guilty but all this gossip just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Appletrees · 07/12/2010 23:06

Yep, and they won't let it lie.

kittya · 07/12/2010 23:09

Of course the press wont let it lie when Max Clifford is involved!! thats his job as a publicist.

Appletrees · 07/12/2010 23:10

I wasn't talking about the press.

kittya · 07/12/2010 23:13

but the more something is in the press the more people talk about it I would have thought, which leads to gossip.

Hopefully there is an end in sight now for this case and the family can mourn in peace.

Appletrees · 07/12/2010 23:29

oh please. gossip under the cver of mawkish sentimentality.

kittya · 07/12/2010 23:33

I hope thats not pointed at me. I really hope not. Read every comment Ive written on here and there has been no finger pointing or gossip.

Good night.

NorthernLurker · 08/12/2010 07:56

The husband has been arrested now - pending extradition.

Appletrees · 08/12/2010 09:58

It was actually but no, fair enough, kittya, you didn't.

SlightlyJaded · 08/12/2010 10:07

What Pooka said. It's only speculation and whilst he may be guilty, he may not. People's lives are ruined by false allegations regardless of whether they are later cleared of blame or not. There are too many who belive 'there is no smoke'.

Not saying he is innocent - how could I? I have no idea any more than anyone else does.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 08/12/2010 11:20

not directly relevant really to the thread but I am just surprised that life is so cheap and if it is true what the driver is saying, 1,400 for a murder seems such a small sum- and presumably even that divided up between the 3 he says were involved. It is just so little to do something like that.

I suppose I never thought about what you would pay a hitman to have a person killed but I would have expected it to be ten thousand or more...

LouMacca · 08/12/2010 11:31

None of us know yet is this man is guilty or innocent but I do think it was a HUGE mistake for Max Clifford to appear on televison yesterday and say that this man is completely innocent - how could he possibly know this? He has only 'known' the man for 2 weeks.

This could just come back and bite Max Clifford on the bum and leave his reputation in tatters.

I just hope this poor girl and her loving family get justice.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 08/12/2010 11:36

hope everyone involved gets justice really. You tend to just assume the legal system works well until you are actually caught up in it yourself though, don't you? At which stage you probably start to panic

When this first occurred, I checked the SA press and there was no mention, whatsoever, as it's such a common and "normal" crime (for e.g. there was much more of an outcry recently when a three year old was murdered - been all over the press).

The criminal justice system in SA is by no means perfect, but I doubt that the would deliberately convict an innocent man of murder, or plotting to murder his wife, just to protect the tourist industry. All the people I've spoken to about this (south africans, english people etc. etc.) know that to go into a township, that late at night, is a ridiculously stupid thing to do. It's not like this is a new revelation "SA has problem with crime!" that is going to bring the tourist industry to its knees, so the country's doing anything they can to protect itself. That's just ridiculous.

Appletrees · 08/12/2010 12:39

Giddy, you said it all earlier with great articulation and I agree.

However Abs, I agree with your point too, there's something a bit racist about that side of things.

And that's as far as I'll go with an opinion about this.

Piffle · 08/12/2010 18:43

I heard that Shrien Dewani's family business was alleged to be in massive debt. Th family were keen to head off that accusation so the family hired Max Clifford. That's what I read.
I had suspicions straight off, but was hoping and still am, that it's not true.
I find it hard to see a motive as it's reported there are no life insurances and the couple were not legally married as yet.
It is a perplexing case and I hope for those that loved Anni, the truth is found
