WW2 Veterans under attack!

compfan · 11/11/2010 21:53

I recently read a book called the unknown warriors, which is loads of ww2 veterans memories and what they think of the country now. I found the book fascinating, I looked on the website on the back of the book and found a section where some crimes against the WW2 generation have been recorded from the last couple of years. OMG!!!! Sad All those of that generation deserve a peaceful old age not being terrorised, murdered or raped in their own homes!

From the last few years -

How can you brush this of with a comment like 'shit happens' No wonder so many of the war veterans in the book said this country is not the country they fought for.

agree with SGM - fastforward another 50yrs - where we have no WW2 veterans alive.

These sorts of hideous crimes will still happen, they just won't have the "WWD veteran" description.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 12/11/2010 16:08

No one is brushing it off

They are saying no one should have these terrible things inflicted upon them

AnnieBeansMum · 12/11/2010 16:09

I agree with the OP that the crimes are disgusting and horrific, however I also agree with StewieGriffinsMom. The crimes are horrible, yes, but surely a crime committed against a veteran is not more ghastly than any other crime. If I am reading her posts correctly, this is all she is saying.

BornAgainBokononist · 12/11/2010 16:10

What SGM said, those things should happen to NO ONE.

I'm with stewiegriffinsmom. These are appauling things to happen, no matter how old the victim.

lemonmuffin · 12/11/2010 16:42

I'm with compfan. Of course no one should have those things happen to them, it somehow seems worse though when its a vulnerable, defenceless elderly person who has been through the nightmare of world war 2 in their youth, now being terrorised when they should be living in peace and safety.

AMumInScotland · 12/11/2010 16:53

It's terrible that the vulnerable in society suffer from attacks like this. But I'd agree with most on here that the fact these particular elderly people are WW2 veterans is not relevant. I would be equally appalled by something similar happening to someone who was a conscientious objector in the war, or who was a few years younger, or in fact was any age at all but happened to be a vulnerable person who became a victim of crime.

Would you be less horrified if some WW2 black market spiv was a victim instead of a veteran?

compfan · 12/11/2010 17:50

Do you recall Agatha Christie writing novels about crimes where 91 year old ladies were forced to perform sex acts on their carers whilst being filmed by a gang member to show his sick friends.... NO BECAUSE SUCH SICK CRIMES WERE UNHEARD OF IN THIS COUNTRY. If you look into it you will see the burgulary rate pre WW2 amounted to 300 a year nationwide and people have DOUBLE the chance per 1,000 people of being murdered in this country now compared to the early 20th century. Children walked safely for miles, doors left unlocked.

This is the point, following generations have destroyed the happy, safe country that they fought for.

MaMoTTaT · 12/11/2010 18:45

of course it happened! And authors long before Christie were writing stories that involved them

Dickens'Oliver Twist - Fagin - runs a gang of pickpockets, Sykes was a violent and dangerous criminal.

Magwitch in Great Expectations was hardly a decent man

Then we had the well known highway men

Jack the Ripper

Perhaps an irony that the Victorians thought that crime rate was falling......

notyummy · 12/11/2010 18:57

I have also read stats that clearly show that the child murder rate has remained relatively static for many, many year...children may used to walk the streets, but they were no safer than they were now. Just as likely to be murdered - and probably just as likely to be abused....but no one spoke about it.

SantasMooningArse · 12/11/2010 19:03

Sick crimes were unheard of in this country? Oh you are in jest, surely? have you not heard of slavery? The many children abused who ahd no resort to help in the way they do now with childline etc? I was discussing the whole'children used to walk miles' thing with Mum; she said that she knew murdered children (In somerset so not inner city estates) and that accidents were more expected then. Certainly during those free wandering days I knew quite a few children randomly assaulted, people just accepted it more then.

As for the rest I'm with SGM- it's terrible, whoever it happens to. There are plenty of otehr vulnerable groups who are equally a target for crimes- eg people with a learning disability- do tehy matter less? Of course not. nobody should be targetted.

And not all old people are vets; my parents both above retirement age but not veteran age- Grandad is but he's 90. Would it be worse if bad things happened to him than them? Nope; it would all be totally despicable.

SantasMooningArse · 12/11/2010 19:05

As a random example of sick crime, in teh fifties (so the era when the vet generation were prety much in charge) a cousin of a loved one was being sexually abused.

Someone raised it with the authorities,

It was decided it was better to ignore as the abused child was severely disabled and better them than someone who might understand more.

That is as sick as any in your list.

Guacamole · 12/11/2010 19:11

Nobody deserves this. However some people are capable of at least putting up a fight... Babies, children, the disabled and the elderly can't.

SantasMooningArse · 12/11/2010 19:20

True

and had thread said defenceless under attack i'd be agreeing (not that it's worse now- of course it's not, look at teh disabled people treated so horribly by the Nazis)

There are awful things happening out there: always have been of course but these days we know and so the worst thing is perhaps that so many feel able to ignore them.

What was that case where teh autistic child was horribly assaulted at school and the perpetrating children given hardly any punishment as boredom was thought fit to be an excuse?

Bloosy awful.

but there is no one group it's worse for. veterans deserve our thanks and gratitude but everybody desrves safety and security.

compfan · 12/11/2010 20:19

Where in my post did I say other victims do not deserve sympathy??

The FACTS ie. from the govt statistics show that since the 1950s all levels of crime from rape to violent assault have risen dramatically.
