here

Surely thats not safe?! What about a matress??

Is he trying to make a pint that if HIS daughter can sleep in a box then surely all the paupers don't need 'grants' to buy cots?!

Hmm

dc6 slept in one of the laundry baskets. It was lined with sheepskin. Nothing wrong with sleeping in a box. Good for him.

Both DS1 and DS2 slept for their first few weeks in the laundry basket, one of our pillows fit perfectly inside then baby on top. We did have a proper wood cot but it was in baby's room and certainly not enough space for the cot in our room. I was breastfeeding and it was very handy to have the box next to the bed so baby stayed there til he grew out of it (and into a carry cot, still by the bed).

Family legend has it my mother put my newborn brother in a drawer as well (not shut I hasten to add Wink).

So I see no problem with the Camerons' box, they were on holiday what else would they do? and yes it's probably turned out convenient so they've stayed with it.

I'm as cynical as anyone as regards politicians but here I think it's just a cute baby story. Certainly something I can relate to.

Bellend.

FGS!

DS1 slept in a car seat all night on occassions even though we had a cot. I do wish people would stop having a go at a DC. It really is unseemly on a website such as MN. Are we going to have a stream of criticism of Ed Miliband when his baby is born? I hope not.

GrimmaTheNome · 26/09/2010 20:19

I wish I'd thought of using a box instead of shelling out for a Moses basket - such a waste of money when they only fit for a couple of months.

As to why this is in a newspaper - well maybe a journalist asked some questions, its what they do you know, and DC answered with what happened to be the truth?

(glad tethersend got the python quote in though, someone had to!)

David Cameron makes me want to vom.

But yeah we're all in this together, see I choose to put my baby in a box. (never you mind about my £30 million).

Baby in a box, cat in the bin, whatever next?

Morloth · 27/09/2010 12:13

Sounds perfectly fine to me. DS2's daytime sleeps happened in the washing basket in the lounge room for the first couple of months.

Why spend money you don't have to?

Baby wouldn't care and the older siblings probably love it.

"His wife is a PR person, let's remember"

She's not, she's the creative director for Smythsons. You may be thinking of Gordon Brown's wife?

lalalonglegs · 27/09/2010 13:00

lucky1979 is perfectly correct but, just to add, David Cameron was in PR (for Carlton media group) before becoming an MP.

lifeinlimbo · 27/09/2010 16:06

Yes lala, David Cameron is ALL PR. Hence the baby in a box press release. As if he cant afford a cot with his £147,000 salary and rent free house plus £72,000 from the rent on his old house, not to mention his £30 million family money, and Im sure the 'creative director of smythson' earns well too.

Everything he says and does is PR, dont look below the surface though because its disgusting.

Sounds like a prelude to "new mums dont need money, they can put their babies in a box, use old newspapers for nappies etc. Hence we are abolishing ...."

megapixels · 27/09/2010 17:32

I think it's a sweet story. He didn't say that he can't afford a cot, they didn't have a cot since the baby was born while on holiday so they used a box in the interim (which the big sister decorated) and now the baby seems to have got used to it and sleeps well there. [whew what a long sentence)

Good for them I say. If my newborn was sleeping well I wouldn't mess with any of the arrangements too.

abr1de · 27/09/2010 17:39

Ed Miliband will have to ask the unions where his baby should sleep.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 27/09/2010 18:04

Tethersend and Abride - thanks for making me LOL!!!

abr1de · 27/09/2010 21:31

:)

I think it's a sweet story - and a gorgeous photo
