Ethnics taking over

front page

the story

...according to the Express. Look at today's front cover. I saw it in the supermarket earlier and was aghast that such blatant racism (they may as well have said "darkies") can appear all over a front page of a British Newspaper.

OK, ok, I was not surprised at all. It was the Express. Read exclusively by almost-dead old white women who are too stupid to read the "big words" in the Mail. I hear it's popular in Bournemouth, Hastings and other places where wrinkled old bigots go to die behind their net curtains.

The sooner the better, I reckon.

those damn ethnics!
i think that we should ban everyone with an ethnic background from the country

personally, i have no ethnicity at all. i simply appeared one day, out of nowhere at all.

orrrrr, maybe bloody newspapers should get a dictionary and read the definition of "ethnic"

RustyBear · 13/07/2010 20:45

I think they should get a dictionary and sort out the caption under the picture....

"One in five of Britain's will be from an ethnic minority, a report forecasts"

Alouiseg · 13/07/2010 20:50

There's been some serious Twitter outrage about it today, it's being referred to PCc who I imagine will do nothing, as usual.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/07/2010 20:51

Aside from the blaring stupidity of their phraseology - who doesn't have an ethnicity, ffs? - it's a horrible term used in that way. I didn't realise it was such common currency here - the only times I've come across it are from dubious ex-pats complaining about the locals (ie. 'ethnics') and some squaddies stationed overseas.

Um, and they do know that ethnicity is not the same as race, don't they? Because I presume what they're trying to say, but think they're being more polite about, is that 1 in 5 will be 'people of colour'.

FellatioNelson · 13/07/2010 22:37

Somehow it wouldn't seem so bad if they had left off the 's'! 'Ethnic' doesn't sound remotely racist whereas 'ethnics' does. The Express is a crap small minded bigots paper anyway.

abshirley · 13/07/2010 23:07

I noticed this in the supermarket today. It made me cringe. How on earth does a national newspaper get away with this sort of headline?

sushistar · 13/07/2010 23:12

What is an 'Ethnic'? Idiots.

We should adopt the term maybe. 'Ohhh, lets have fish and chips tonight, I'm feeling very Ethnic'.

sushistar · 13/07/2010 23:14

Reshape, even the 'of colour' is a bit dodge I think - I'm 'coloured' white.

They could say 'will be from an ethnic minority' but that wouldn't fit on the headline. Maybe they should have had 'will be non-white'. Or maybe it wasn't worth having as their front page story - after all, so what?

Words are funny aren't they - I worked in an care home for older people and there was only one black care assistent. This old lady used to always say 'Where's the dark girl? She's better than the rest of you, she's much nicer I want the dark girl!' Of course it was horribly racist, but somehow kindly meant - just completly inappropriate terminology!

RedBlueRed · 13/07/2010 23:52

Waddaloadashit.
Please don't link to this paper ever, ever, ever again?
Btw my aunt is an old-ish lady who lives in Bournemouth and she is no bigot nor does she have nets.

FellatioNelson · 14/07/2010 07:18

sushistar - I don't think that the 'dark girl' comment is racist. You wouldn't bat an eyelid if she had said the blonde or the ginger girl, or the one with the big glasses! It was just her way of singling her out for identification, in the most obvious way, and to her generation it would be considered rude to directly say the word 'black'. In fact lots of people still do squirm at saying 'black' - they somehow think 'coloured' is more polite.

Now if she's said 'I don't want that dark girl touching me, I only want a white carer, (without qualifying it with the fact that the dark girl is rubbish, or too rough, or whatever) then that is racist.

I think we get our knickers in a bit of twist over what is and isn't racist these days. It doesn't mean that all ethnic minority people should be beyond critisism all of the time, nor that we should never actually mention the fact that they are non white/indiginous.

Anyway, as an observation, I spent the day at Alton Towers on Monday, and if the population at Alton Towers is representative of the country as a whole then 1 in 5 of us already are Ethnics!

2shoes · 14/07/2010 09:03

have to lol at op
moaning about bigots and then being one herself.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 14/07/2010 12:30

sushistar - I put 'people of colour' into inverted commas because I also would never use that term! I meant to imply it's the sort of mealy-mouthed term the Express or Mail might use. I agree, it's crap.

seeker · 14/07/2010 12:37

Oh I do get pissed off when people are racist.

I also get pissed off when people are ageist.

Snobear4000 · 14/07/2010 13:09

I love heaps of old people. Just not the ones who read or subscribe to the right-wing views in the Express. I do not like those stick-in-the-mud elderly racists and miserable codgers.

I do have a deep affection for the old ladies who live three doors down from me. I deeply love my elderly father, remember very fondly my grandparents, and have a couple of colleagues in their 60s who are wonderful gentlemen who BTW don't read the Express. Or the Mail.

And I still dislike the wrinked old bigots I see tut-tutting at hoodies around Hastings.

But oh how certain people like to be offended, and take any criticism of anyone to be a slander of a whole group. You really can not win, here on MN. Someone is always gonna have a crack at you no matter what you said, because people are trawling for comments to satisfy their need to be offended.

In fact, some of your best friends are over 60........!

Blu · 14/07/2010 14:01

Am LOL ing at the Headline about 'gay asylum' too.

What a load of disgraceful old tosh.

Good reality check about the real mix of Britain, though.

EldritchCleavage · 14/07/2010 15:33

What I don't get is the doublethink-how a certain constituency seems to think it only right and proper that they can emigrate anywhere, or work abroad on lucrative contracts, get free medical treatment if taken ill in an EU country, or have holiday homes in all kinds of countries where they don't bother learning the local language or mixing with natives, but heaven forbid any foreigners should come here to holiday, work or live, oh dear me no. How do they sustain that hypocrisy without their heads exploding?

FIL lives abroad. Last time we visited one of his drinking buddies regaled me (an 'ethnic' in Express parlance) with his half-baked views on England going to dogs-too many immigrants-rack and ruin-they don't learn English-want everything done for them, etc etc ad nauseam. This man does not speak the language of his present country of residence. He drinks all day and whines about having to wait for the free translator when he goes to the doctor.

porcamiseria · 14/07/2010 15:49

and I LOVE the burka clad women inthe photo too!!!! they are the only "ethnics" they can photo

shame, shame shame

sushistar · 14/07/2010 16:49

Who knows if the burka lady is an 'ethnic'. Maybe she's white Bristish with a strong Devonshire accent. Or something. Who converted to Islam.

Rambles off on tangent....

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 14/07/2010 17:59

Ethnics? Snurk!

What next? Hottentots? Pansies?

Even in my often seriously un-PC workplace, a colleague was utterly and completely ridiculed for referring to "ethnics". We have referred to him as David Brent ever since

Snobear4000 · 14/07/2010 20:13

Yes, the burka photograph was a pure classic. You could not make it up.
