Have Ikea discontinued the Trofast system?

TheMysticMasseuse · 30/05/2010 16:14

You know, the ubiquitous and frankly genius storage system with the multicoloured boxes.

I have been looking on their website for half an hour and I can't find it!

Please tell me they haven't discontinued the range...

Thanks!

I sent dh to wembley last night in hope of the offer but it wasnt on offer there and they only have short ones out on display apparently

DaisymooSteiner · 11/06/2010 17:55

I saw Trofast on display at Nottingham last week, but don't know whether they were actually in stock. Worth a call to ask?

serenity · 12/06/2010 01:26

Ok, can't be specific about what's in stock where, as none of you said exactly which bits of Trofast you wanted, but in general Croydon, Southampton, Wednesbury, and Nottingham all have plenty of pretty much everything in the range.

It's not being discontinued completely, but a few bits of the range are which could be why it's disappeared from the website (easier to take it all off, jiggle it about and then replace it I suppose displays appalling lack of knowledge of how webpage is put together)

Off the top of my head (because it's late and I now can't find the scrap of paper I made notes on) it's the red and blue fronted drawers and matching doors that have gone, plus a changing table adaptation and some other little bits. The basic system is safe and well!

You are a star serenity! Off to Croydon next week then to clear them out of Trofast! Might see you there

leeloo1 · 12/06/2010 18:47

The basic system is safe and well!

Hurray! I was ready to cry like a baby if it was bad news about Trofast!

In case anyone was thinking of shopping at either North London IKEAs the customer service at Wembley is fantastic - far better than Edmonton. The latter refused to send out a missing piece (of Trofast) because I'd bought it in store, whereas Wembley are sending out a whole new replacement, despite the fact that I didn't buy it in their store! Very polite and helpful too!

Boogle77 · 13/06/2010 21:17

This is SO interesting. We were in Edmonton Ikea on Saturday and about to buy x2 of the Trofast units with the blue doors on top and the four blue shelves on the bottom. But they didn't have the frame. Then tried to get it at Wembley and they had the frame but not the drawers. So it now seems that Croydon is the best bet to get all of it... Badgering DH now to try to go there this week.

Really worried about all the talk of stuff being discontinued - we only just discovered this and it is perfect for the kids room (just moved the baby into the 2 year old's room so a lot of "consolidation" of mess going on). Will be v upset to have this perfect solution snatched from our grasp!

They had loads of the regular Trofast kit (the boxes and the waist height units) at Edmonton though, for those looking for that stuff.

Have to say customer service at Edmonton was appalling...

Am sure Croydon will be better if serenity's help on here is anything to go by!

BouncingTurtle · 13/06/2010 21:29

I thought the same thing as the OP a couple of weeks ago. But I did visit Ikea Gateshead a couple of weeks back and it looked like they had plenty there - I am sending DH to the one in Leeds to buy some of it for DS's room!

I really hope they are not planning to discontinue it!

leeloo1 · 14/06/2010 13:02

Boogle77 Did you have a look in the clearance bit at Wembley - the only couple of times I've been there there has been lots of bits of Trofast in there at reduced prices (I got the staggered low unit for £28 and the wall unit for £14 - well ended up getting 2 for £14 as it was that they sent a replacement of for the damaged one) - well worth a look if you're passing.

Boogle77 · 14/06/2010 19:24

Thanks leeloo1 - will check it out if we end up back there.

In among all this talk of Ikea I chatted to my friend about it and she told me classic anecdote... last time she went there and wrestled in the warehouse with a big box she asked a passing ikea man for help. He said he couldn't as not his job... she asked what were women on their own like her supposed to do..?

His reply... "bring a man with you next time"!

serenity · 15/06/2010 01:01

He was a bit cheeky - but it's sort of true. It's a self service warehouse. We have minimum staff to keep costs down, and the idea is that you come in and pick the stuff up yourself. We don't hide that! If you know you're going to come in and buy big bulky items, you need to bring help, don't rely on grabbing someone to help because if it's busy you'll end up pissed off and disappointed. (Should say though that the implication that women need extra help because they're women is just as bad as the guy saying she should have brought a man)

Boogle - we haven't got the blue drawers in Croydon. Think we've got a couple of the red ones, but most stores have already run out of the discontinued bits.

LOL at Croydon being better though. It's known worldwide as 'The Beast' and no-one wants to work here (very busy, very hard and our customers are notoriously difficult, gawd bless them)

jetcat · 18/06/2010 17:09

shameless bump really

I still cant find trofast on the website, so cant get any idea of the prices. From what i read on this thread - i gather it isnt too expensive?

Would anyone know if Gateshead still had any in - in particular the pink boxes?

Finally - is there any actual alternative to Trofast anywhere else?

leeloo1 · 19/06/2010 20:43

From recollection... The plastic boxes are £2.50 each for the middle sized ones, the wooden frames are around £60ish, unless they have them in the clearance bit or on a family card offer.

Rafi · 20/06/2010 13:35

The Trofast stuff has reappeared on the ikea website

www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=trofast

jetcat · 20/06/2010 17:22

aha - thanks rafi

I went through yesterday and bought a selection of boxes - while trying to figure out which housing units to get. I did have a smile to myself while looking around at all the other mums carefully studying various plastic boxes, as if their lives depended on it!

I can now get to browse at home all the units, as as i dont have transport, i will have to get them delivered.

We have actually already sorted out DD2's toys, and boxes are suitably filled and ready to get put away - cant wait!

CoffeeCrazedMama · 20/06/2010 17:35

Ooh - while we have Serenity's attention (I'm one of those difficult Croydon customers Serenity ) - are they ever going to restock the Byom doors for Billy system? They've been out of stock for months (ever since I decided to turn an unwanted Billy bookcase into a towel cupboard...

Please tell me they aren't discontinued - and this in the year they celebrate 25 or whatever years of Billy ...

serenity · 20/06/2010 20:55

I'll have a look tomorrow...

whomovedmychocolate · 20/06/2010 21:01

Oh god IKEAporn

Lego for the home.

Butterpie · 20/06/2010 21:11

I love that trofast stuff!

Don't think I would get buying new furniture past DP though. We already have shelves everywhere.

...That trofast stuff looks so useful though...

AnyFuleKno · 20/06/2010 21:34

I just don't see the appeal of trofast, it is a total eyesore. We have a couple of bits but because the boxes are so light, dd pulls them out and dumps contents all over the floor about once a day. The lids should snap on, not just sit limply on top and become dislodged at the slightest provocation.

I am swiftly falling out of love with ikea. The last few times I've been there (to Leeds store) the staff seem almost proud of the shitty service. I was told there wasn't a single catalogue instore where I could compare bed options, after walking from bedding to the front of house. We then found a laminated copy in pride of place next to the doors.

Also lots of things I've bought look cleverly designed and then turned out to be wildly impractical (c.f. childs bedroom lamp which after falling on carpeted floor shattered into tiny slivers of glass, sofas with no arms ffs! footstool with cover which is an inch shy of the bottom exposing a gorgeous view of plywood withing - I could go on)

mice · 20/06/2010 21:47

Serenity - another one wanting to take advantage of your extensive knowledge (creep)
I am trying to get hold of the svala chairs but since they have stopped selling as sets of two chairs and a table and selling chairs and tables separately they seem to only have the tables in stock.
Are the chairs still available? Thank you!

serenity · 21/06/2010 00:34

Should be, but I'll check those tomorrow too. They were on a family card offer a while back, maybe that's why there's a shortage now? IDK, I'll let you know what I can find out

serenity · 21/06/2010 16:55

CoffeeCrazedMama - Ok, what does are you after 'cos there should be loads!

40x98 and 40x194 in Birch, Oak or White, all OK and in stock.

40x35 in Oak has availability issues, and we only have a few in the Birch and White.

40x35 in Beech is showing up as discontinued (so I presume we did the other sizes in that colour too, and they've gone)

Byom doesn't seem to show up on the Website though, just on our system.

mice - Shouldn't be a problem with the Svala chairs, we have 150 here! What store are you trying to get them from?

serenity · 21/06/2010 17:03

does? Obviously that should be 'doors'. It's been a long day...

jetcat · 21/06/2010 17:06

serenity - can i ask you something?

I know i need to go instore to get the housing units for trofast, which i should be able to manage to get on the trolley by myself. But, i also need a sofa, and while i could buy that online - that would mean two lots of delivery charges (about £35 each).

SO i am hoping to get it while i get the trofast instore (keeping up so far?) But, i have no one to come with me (apart from my 3 year old) and help get it on the trolley. If i am buying it for delivery - can i simply pay for it without taking it to checkout IYSWIM?

Or do i need to take item to checkout, then to the delivery section?

CisforCookie · 21/06/2010 17:09

Oh no - they've discontinued the changing table top?!!

I don't suppose anyone has moved on from that stage and has one they want to get rid of in the Dorset area? (Blatant thread hijack, sorry).

Thanks!
