Anyone remember those curtains that you put hooks in?

and they go on a runner as opposed a curtain pole. I'm on a curtain hunt and can't remember what they're called. I can't have a pole in a bay window so need the more old fashioned traditional type curtains

BTW, you can get custom poles for bays but they are expensive

I think you would call it a curtain track. I think the curtain hooks come attached to the track and then you can use any curtain with header tape ( ie not eyelet or tab top)

you need anything that isn't eyelets or tab tops basically.
they come in lots of different styles, but all the bog standard ones will go on a curtain track

PS: rather embarrassingly I have just realised that curtain poles don't have to be made of wood...

my mother always has them and my mother = old fashioned! We have blinds at the moment and I want cosy curtains but have a bastard bay window. Nothing is ever simple.

I bought a bay curtain rail in Dunelm Mill - v easy to fit.

No they're not, I am jesting I hate tab top curtains (offends other curtain owners!) as they always look messy in my house

Anyone know what a return wall is in simple English? I don't know if I've got one!

The return wall is the bit is the normal wall - not the bay wall. You can either get a rail that goes in the bay only or get extender bits that go round the corner so you can open the curtain back so you get maximum light coming in.

Here is an example. The underscore is the return wall on either side...

We've got a choice by the look of things.
a) curtain track (easy to fit) but curtains harder to find
b) curtain pole (expensive) but curtains everywhere!

I used to love my flat windows when I lived in a flat

We have curtain poles in bay windows. Get them made by an ironmonger it cost the same but you don't have the shonky bendy bits (sorry to anyone who has them but the real thing is much nicer).

Are tracks that old fashioned?

We haven't got any in this house but my mum has them in some rooms and their house was only built 25 years ago.

They're better IMO, still quite draughty with poles but the tracks make it nice and snug (although we do live in the frozen North where this sort of thing is important, even in May!) [shivers]

Do bay window poles fit a two sided bay?

TeaOneSugar - yes they do - ours are very odd because it's a very old building. Quite honestly if you factor in the cost of all the bends if you buy the kit ones, it's as cheap to get one made - ours were about £120 each. Yes it sounds a lot, but they are hand cast iron, bespoke, delivered with finials and the centre bracket etc.

Ikea sell a see through track which is flexible, if your curtains aren't very heavy that will deal with this sort of situation very effectively.
