Fling before you fly

realitychick · 03/04/2010 15:50

Hi

Does anyone else fancy starting off with a month of 27 thing-flings before they fly? i just never get into flying full-on because our house is such a pickle. It's better than it was - with all the room rescues and 15 minute timed clean ups, but I've finally realised that you can't clean clutter.

So starting with the clothes that the kids and I have outgrown I'm on a fling-a-day for a month.

Also plan to fling:
out of date packets lurking in cupboards
baby toys
broken electrical goods put by to 'mend' one day
books I'll never read again
videos and cassette tapes

Anyone want to suggest another set of things to fling?

Ooh I've been "flinging" for the last two weeks!

Things that have gone include:
CD's
DVD's
Massive wardrobe clear out for everyone. Have put away alot of winter clothes too

Am now starting on the garden

ConnorTraceptive · 03/04/2010 15:57

Also got rid of a lot of toiletries and make up that haven't been touched for months.

realitychick · 03/04/2010 19:38

A toiletries and make up purge sounds good. On the list.

Oooh a fling a day sounds like a BRILLIANT idea, not that much left to go that it will take me all month, but a week or so of concentrated flinging before I literally fly (off on hols) would be a really good idea

How is it going to work? Do we post our list or just that we have done it or what? Or are you going to give us suggest focussed flings? - Can you tell I like things to be organised!!

realitychick · 04/04/2010 11:31

OK - since we might all have different things to fling - why don't we post our fling lists?

I'll fling:

Today: 27 items of clothing that don't fit
Monday: 27 socks that don't match
Away Tues-Thurs
Friday: 27 packets in cupboards that will never get used...
Saturday: 27 toiletries
Sunday: 27 books

Anyone else want to post their fling challenge for the week?

DreamTeamGirl · 04/04/2010 16:43

Woo hoo!!!

OK, Today I have flung
27 broken/ missing parts toys
Monday: 27 'cleaning products'- be that shampoos, bleaches, face creams etc that will never get used up!! This will get my under sink cupboard clearer and sort the bathroom ready for new shower shelf to be fitted

Tuesday: 27 fling boogie from MY bedroom, specifically under my bed and bedside cabinet
This'll be a goodun cos my Roomba cant get under my bed at the moment

Wednesday: 27 fling from kitchen- takeaway wetwipes, old medicine spoons, and dead batteries may feature highly on this list along with old envelopes!!
Good day to do kitchen as I always cook late after Slimming World so I can do it whilst my pasta is cooking

Thursday: 27 fling from DS' room- most likley all the outgrown school uniform as he has grown from aged 4-5 in Spetember to now aged 6-7
Needs doing as I bought the new clothes for him on Friday but cant put them away cos draws are full

Friday: My clothes as I will be sorting them out ready for packing

Saturday: I am going to be packing ready for my holiday and away Sunday to Sunday, so will check in on this thread when I get back and decide on the next step, which I suspect will be focussed on the draws in the dining area of lounge.

Good luck everyone

realitychick · 04/04/2010 16:55

Ooh! I like your broken parts toys' fling. That's going straight on my list.

Today I flung 27 items of clothing the kids had outgrown and emptied an entire shelf of their closet. No more of them getting themselves dressed in ankle swingers. Woo-hoo!

I like your detail DreamTeam. Old envelopes on Wednesday. Hmm, I may be away with the kids but DP isn't and he has a lot of old envelopes. Might leave a little list for him.

Hey reality
How is your fling week going?

Mine failed totally as sadly my dad died on Monday , so I didnt get any of it done

I am going to carry it over to next week or the week after tho as I do think it was a great idea

LinzerTorte · 09/04/2010 07:43

I've been lurking on this thread wondering whether to join in (I'm on the Fledgling Flyers thread - I was aberita, but have just name changed), but in the end I decided to concentrate on trying to get my routines done and leave the decluttering till later.

Anyway, I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear about your dad DreamTeamGirl - thinking of you and sending you lots of sympathy.

realitychick · 09/04/2010 19:22

Hi DreamTeam

I am so sorry to hear your news. I hope you have plenty of loving support around right now. My thoughts and very best wishes are with you and your family.

DreamTeamGirl · 09/04/2010 22:02

Oh thank you both so much- it was all a bit of a shock especially as I had just been posting Sunday how he was doing so much better. Then 6 hours later we were at the hospital on bed side watch

Its very kind of you both to post tho, so thank you

realitychick · 10/04/2010 09:06

OK
Back from holidays and ready to fling.

Anyone want to join in either by flinging the same stuff or posting their daily flings for the week?

Today is sunny so will pledge to fling 27 broken and useless things from the garden - mainly old placcy toys the kids have outgrown. Already offered their old sandpit on Freecycle.

Sunday: Kitchen cupboard fling

Monday: Indoor toy fling

Tuesday: Clothes/fabric fling in time for charity bag collection

Wednesday: Electrical fling - all those broken lamps and chargers for phones that died years ago

Thursday: Book fling

Friday: paper fling

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 10/04/2010 14:54

Hope you had a good holiday, realitychick. I've decided to join you after all as I really need to do something about all our clutter. Anyway, here's my list:

Today: toys (as the playroom is our most cluttered room...)

Sunday: any out-of-date food in the kitchen

Monday: toiletries, make-up and out-of-date medicine

Tuesday: books

Wednesday: paperwork (cause of clutter second only to toys)

Thursday: clothes

Friday: CDs and DVDs

realitychick · 11/04/2010 16:12

Looks like a good list Linzer. Must add toiletries etc to mine next week. Some of that make up is eugh.

How's it going? Had a good fling of garden toys yesterday and then finished it off by flinging lots of old paperwork.
Not done kitchen cupboards yet today...

OP posts:
DreamTeamGirl · 11/04/2010 21:51

Hi all

Done a quick fling today in the kitchen- lots of food gone!

Did out of date medicines a few weeks ago - dont forget to take them to a pharmacy- some can even be taken overseas

Garden is a BRILLIANT idea- mine is minging

LinzerTorte · 11/04/2010 22:19

Well, I managed to get the toy fling done yesterday - not that it's seemed to make much difference to the general toy clutter as I mainly got rid of little bits and pieces (small plastic toys etc) from the DDs' bedroom. I should really have concentrated on the playroom, but there's always next week!

I haven't got quite as far with the kitchen cupboards though - I threw away a packet of hazelnuts that expired in 2007, but that's about it. On the plus side, I did go through our DVDs yesterday and got rid of 12, so that's half of Friday's fling done. I'll leave the other 26 things till tomorrow - and try and get make-up etc done then too.

realitychick · 13/04/2010 08:29

Hi

I've fallen behind a bit too. It's school holidays still, so every time I start on a cupboard someone shouts 'mum'. That's my excuse anyway. Will just do what i can this week and start again next week.

Nice hazelnuts.

I threw away a huge bottle of evening primrose oil dated 2007 yesterday. Wonder if we can beat that date.

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 13/04/2010 09:15

I'm also getting quite behind - and don't even have the excuse of school holidays any more, as the DC went back the Wednesday after Easter. My excuse is work; I had lots of good intentions yesterday and managed to get as far as flinging another 4 or 5 things from the kitchen, but then some work arrived - and everything falls by the wayside then.

I'm sure I can find something older than 2007! That's inspired me to carry on with the kitchen later today - must get on with some work first, though...

ChairmumMiaowGoingItAlone · 13/04/2010 10:06

You just reminded me to do a quick fling / clean, so I've done one shelf in a kitchen cupboard. I think I'll try to do one every day till they're all done!

ChairmumMiaowGoingItAlone · 14/04/2010 21:44

Went a bit overboard on the fling today and did all the food cupboards in the kitchen. Chucked out way more than 27 out of date items

realitychick · 14/04/2010 23:53

Good for you Chairmum! I love opening cupboards and things not falling out of them! I did one of our kitchen cupboards recently - strawberry jelly from 2007. What happened in 2007 that made us all too busy to eat what we'd bought?

Been out all day yesterday and today - but did manage to fling some bulky toys via Freecycle, old broken garden furniture to the tip and recycled some shoes the kids had grown out of. Not exactly sticking to my list but at least stuff is leaving the house.

OP posts:
DreamTeamGirl · 17/04/2010 01:00

Marking my spot to remind me what I planned to do so I can find it again

realitychick · 19/04/2010 12:26

Today is kitchen horrors fling day. Mine include some scratched old school waterbottles, battered saucepans, lids that have no containers and containers that have no lids. And... some dried chillies from 2007 again!

Rounding off the fling with all those old papers and out of date notices from school and beavers.

How are you all doing?

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 19/04/2010 20:29

I think I'm going to have to start all over again this week. I managed to fling quite a few of the DC's old clothes and toys last week, but didn't get very far otherwise (12 DVDs and less than 10 items from the kitchen, from what I can remember).

So, carrying on from where I left off, I'll be back in the kitchen tomorrow. I also have so many containers without lids and vice versa, realitychick - the only problem with throwing them is that the missing lid/container always seems to turn up eventually (if I can only find the lid, it's virtually guaranteed that DH has pinched the container for something). So anything without its other half ends up in the cellar in case the other half turns up... actually, I'm sure I could easily find 27 kitchen items in the cellar to fling.

realitychick · 19/04/2010 21:50

So true about containers and lids. It's like the 27 odd sock fling. Their pairs come crawling home and line up in the drawer the minute you've flung their partners.
