What is this "making beds" thing I keep hearing about?

Don't get me wrong we change our sheets duvet covers etc,but only ever put them straight when getting in at night or if we're having visitors.
Do people seriously consider this a household chore that needs to be done?
Please enlighten me as to why I really should start doing it/yelling at dcs to do it.

I hate having a made up bed

As a kid my auntie who always had us as both my parents worked would make me make every bed in the house every day and scream at me if they wasn't perfect so now im an adult and i can have my bed how i please i make sure its extra messy, bedroom door is always closed so no one but me an DP see's it

DP tries to make it every now and again but i mess it back up, childish i know

I dont tell the DC to make their beds either, i lt them be messy, DP does though

AMumInScotland · 23/03/2010 16:59

I throw the duvet back when we get up, to let the bed "air" a bit. And then put it back in the evening. But that's as "made" as it gets... or needs to...

nomorecake · 23/03/2010 17:05

i make our bed everday.
not difficult, just shake out pillows and straighten out duvet cover.

makes the room look so much better.

i use the bed to put stuff on (i.e. piles of clothes to put away) and its alot easier if the bed is made.

also i find if i dont straighten the duvet out, the duvet starts twisting around in the cover, i like the duvet corners to be in its covers corners.

then at bed time, just jump in.

BridesheadRegardless · 23/03/2010 17:07

Oh no, you have to make the bed!

It's just so....wrong, not too.

Has that convinced you?

Seriously I hate the huose feeling all messy just knowing that the beds aren't made. don't you like your house to look all nice and tidy?

Dear God I am my mother feel free to mock.

blogpage · 23/03/2010 18:17

It's something that takes only a small amount of time for a big result, making the room look a whole lot better.

lambanana · 23/03/2010 19:00

I make all the beds as soon as I get up. I hate an unmade bed - it messes with my mind!

BertieBotts · 23/03/2010 19:02

No - I don't. If I was spending time in the bedroom during the day, I might, because it does look lovely when it is made. But if nobody is going to see it (I don't generally invite people into my bedroom ) including me, what is the point?

Same with ironing duvet covers. Why??

Same as Mutt. I turn the covers back for a bit but then usually make them after breakfast.

I like getting into a made bed.

nappyzoneloveslindor · 23/03/2010 19:05

I do this before mil babysits incase she snoops and thinks im a slob.

purpleturtle · 23/03/2010 19:07

I usually make our bed soon after emerging from it, to prevent me from crawling back into it.

I sometimes make the boys' beds - if I can get to them through the piles of detritus on their floor. I never make DD's loft bed (except when changing the sheets, obv), because I can't see it without climbing the ladder.

thelittlebluepills · 23/03/2010 19:09

it's different now we all have duvets. When I was young I had to make my bed every morning after breakfast - but I had sheets, blankets and maybe a quilt. I had to hospital corners with the blankets and sheets and fold them down neatly at the top!

Fortunately my mum has now recognised how much easier duvets are! (She still warms the plates though - and is very very shocked that I don't )

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou · 23/03/2010 19:09

i love getting into a nice, neat bed. i hate getting into it when OH has made it cause you just cant feel the care and attention taken to make it .

but seriously though, it's just so much nicer to know that my bed is made.

Clary · 23/03/2010 19:12

It's just nice because it makes the room look nice if the DC play in it later.

And it's nicer to get into a nice smoothed bed with puffed up pillows than a crumpled looking one.

And it takes about 25 seconds.

Mooos · 24/03/2010 14:47

I could have written that! Are you Scottish?

Mooos · 24/03/2010 14:48

Ooops I was replying to the littlebluepills.

plantsitter · 24/03/2010 14:52

Bedbugs prefer made beds, 'cos they like the dark foistiness of them (I know this because I work in student accommodation, not because I breed bedbugs or anything).

Perfect reason not to imo!

kickassangel · 24/03/2010 15:09

i usually turn back the duvet & let it air, but they are made before I take dd to get the school bus.

we live in the US, where there's a whole sheets/comforter/quilt/pillows/cushions arrangement thing (so it looks like a shop display), and I LOVE it - makes the bedroom look good.

SparkyToo · 24/03/2010 15:40

I try to make the bed daily. But having thrown back the covers to let the bed "air" I then don't often get round to making the bed until just before getting back into it!!

You've got to admit, overall this bed looks so much better than this bed.

notsoteenagemum · 24/03/2010 16:00

I fold the covers right back because I like to get into a cold bed and bed bugs scare me now I know you can see them [shudder] and it makes the room tidier if the bed is straight.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/03/2010 16:03

Some of you sound like my dd. She does not see the point in making a bed, every morning I say 'make the bed' and every morning she mutters. She says it is more comfy when you get in it when it is all messy

She however thinks I am a mad nutter when I change the sheets most days and obsess about clean sheets. I have to hyper nag every weekend to get her to change her sheets.

Oh god I am officially old and turning into Hyacinth Bucket.

Clary · 24/03/2010 23:54

getorf you change the sheets most days?

Really? I thought I was bad (well people tell me so) doing the DCs' beds once a week!

BooyhooNOTboohoooORbooyou · 25/03/2010 13:18

oh i do the whole cushion arrangment/shop display thing aswell which drives OH mad. he loves nothing more tham throwing them all over the room when he goes to get in bed at night. at which point i get out of bed and gather them all up and arrange them nicely in the corner of the room.

i know i am weird.

ppeatfruit · 25/03/2010 15:13

Yes mutt beds actually NEED airing,

if you make yr, bed straight away then you encourage all the house dust mites and it starts to smell.

Because we all sweat pints in the night so beds need airing for at least 2 hours to 'dry out'

So OP is correct. How many of yr. friends go looking in the bedrooms any way? you can always make them later in the day if unmade beds offend you.

shockers · 25/03/2010 15:20

Sparky... how did you get into my house?
