What is this "making beds" thing I keep hearing about?

Don't get me wrong we change our sheets duvet covers etc,but only ever put them straight when getting in at night or if we're having visitors.
Do people seriously consider this a household chore that needs to be done?
Please enlighten me as to why I really should start doing it/yelling at dcs to do it.

What others said about bedbugs and mites. I pile fold the duvet carelesslyfully at the foot of the bed and leave it like that.
proof!

"However, most homes in the UK are sufficiently humid for the mites to do well and I find it hard to believe that simply not making your bed would have any impact on the overall humidity."

it was on gmtv the other day with the lady from 'how clean is your house' you should peel the covers back and open the window at least an inch even in winter to let the sweat evaporate etc.

i make the bed every day. its just something i do because it makes me feel like ive got this whole housework (how the feck did i end up with this task!!) business under control!

It's SO easy to make the bed here with duvets.

Kids get up and throw back the duvet, I open the window a bit whilst getting them dressed/teeth brushed/faces washed and hair up.

Then, in winter or colder weather, close window, give duvet a shake (girls shake their pillows).

Smooth it all back on.

Job done.

Easy peasy and takes a minute.

We "make" the bed at night right before we get into it (that goes for DS's bed too). Beds spend the day in the state of disarray they were in when we crawled out of them in the morning. Only exception is if someone is going to see it strewn with knickers or whatever eg a workman coming to fix something in that room, then I would tidy it up a bit.

I also read somewhere that slobby people who don't make their beds have fewer dust mites as the bedding gets an airing.
