Do you air your house when it's freezing?

satc2bringiton · 09/02/2010 12:38

I feel like my house needs a bloody good airing, but it's soooo cold and my heatings on!

I always have bedroom windows open, but can shut all the doors. My downstairs is very open plan, so quite tricky.

No but then I live in a draughty victorian terraced house and I figure in the winter it airs itself!

BooKangerooWonders · 09/02/2010 12:51

definitely, gets rid of condensation/ smells! Only a few mins tho'

Sonnet · 09/02/2010 12:51

Yes - every week.....

MrFibble · 09/02/2010 12:54

Yep. Every morning - 30 minutes with all upstairs windows open and duvets on window sills (if it isn't raining).

Granny23 · 09/02/2010 13:03

Yes, several times a day. DH thinks it is necessary to leave front or back door wide to the wall everytime he goes out to check the car, put the car seat in, put the bins out, put something in the shed, fetch/chop logs, split sticks, etc. etc. His 'I am going out and may be some time' forays are often extended by a blether with the next door neighbours. 44 years I have been trying to break this habit!!!

cheesypopfan · 09/02/2010 13:09

no - would love to, but have storage heaters, so would lose heat and not be able to replace it.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/02/2010 13:12

Yes, I hate it when it feels all stagnant and stale in the air. Luckily we got over enthusiastic with the boiler and radiators that it is like a sauna again after 20 mins

andlipsticktoo · 09/02/2010 13:15

Yes. I leave bedroom windows open all day and do a quick 10 mins downstairs too. It drives DH mad, money flying out the window...etc (yawn)

Chillohippi · 09/02/2010 13:19

I try to have the upstairs windows open for at last half an hour a day. Downstairs the back door is open a lot anyway to let the dogs in and out and is left open when they are out, so that kind of airs that.

Poledra · 09/02/2010 13:20

Air the upstairs every weekend (with heating turned off!) for half an hour. Downstairs we have a huge chimney in the living room, and the back door gives directly into the kitchen, so that airs the downstairs out sufficiently.

onlyjoinedforoffers · 09/02/2010 13:24

yes all the windows get opened at some point on the day makes such a difference to the quality of the air you breathe unless of course its nothing but fumes coming in

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/02/2010 13:26

Yes. Every day without fail. Tis bracing!

Conundrumish · 09/02/2010 13:27

Yes but I have noticed we are the only one of our immediate neighbourhood that seem to.

sallyjaygorce · 09/02/2010 13:27

We enter and leave by a vacuum sealed air lock.

Undercovamutha · 09/02/2010 13:29

Leave the upstairs windows open a crack until DD comes home from school. Then close them to give the house a chance to warm up ready for the evening. Don't bother with downstairs apart from the kitchen, as the living room and dining room are near the front door so benefit from a good gust of air when we're going in and out!

TheBossofMe · 09/02/2010 13:31

Every day first thing in the morning. Unless its pouring with rain and the air is really damp.

MrsJohnDeere · 09/02/2010 13:31

One bathroom that is prone to condensation and our bedroom for a couple of hours each morning, but with the doors firmly shut.

Not downstairs though or the dcs' bedroom (which is a really cold room and a struggle to keep warm).

pigsinmud · 09/02/2010 13:31

Yes - no heating in the morning and I open all the windows for a few hours. Heating on & windows shut when dd2 comes home from pre-school at 1pm.

Hulababy · 09/02/2010 13:33

No, I never "air" my house. If it is warm outside I will open the windows, but not int he winter.

I have a new build houe which is very well insulated, and I like it toasty warm!

We open the bathroom window when we shower, as works better than the fan. But that is it.

thedollshouse · 09/02/2010 13:36

Dh does. I don't because I hate being cold. At the weekend dh gets all huffy and opens all the windows.

duende · 09/02/2010 13:39

yes. bedrooms before we go to sleep and downstairs when DS is upstairs having a nap.

Ripeberry · 09/02/2010 13:46

Our neighbour has their bedroom window open all year round and in summer she puts a fan in the opening. I think it's night sweats .
There is always someone in the house so they are not bothered about burglars.

wastingaway · 09/02/2010 13:47

Oh yes. The condensation in this house is appalling. I try and leave them open as long as possible. As long as it doesn't drop below 17C in DS room.

mumto2andnomore · 09/02/2010 13:49

No never even thought of it, have the windows open in the summer but thats it
