Do you air your house when it's freezing?

I feel like my house needs a bloody good airing, but it's soooo cold and my heatings on!

I always have bedroom windows open, but can shut all the doors. My downstairs is very open plan, so quite tricky.

Love the airlock sallyjaygorce. I've sealed up the front door with masking tape to keep the draught out.
I might try the bedroom routine with doors shut, teenage boys rooms can be very whiffy in the morning. .
MrFibble are you in Netherlands by any chance? I had a friend who lived there for a spell and everyone threw the duvets out over the window ledge in the morning. You could see down the street every house had duvets hung out.

Never open the windows in the winter. I try to keep the heat I have paid for in the house.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 09/02/2010 14:04

I open at least the bathroom window, usually bedrooms too. Don't worry so much about downstairs because we are in and out. Don't usually have the heating on during the day though

@inthesticks - close but no cigar! It's actually very interesting to see how many of the neighbours have succumbed to IKEA bed linen...

Well, I find it interesting - a comment on globalisation in a small village on the Continent...

we are all double glazed, so unless its freezing outside then the upstairs bedroom windows are on the vent setting so never really totally enclosed.

Spring comes and my window opens, much to my dh's annoyance!!!

LifeOfKate · 09/02/2010 18:34

Christ no, I hate being cold. Was brought up in an incredibly draughty house where the heating was rarely put on and someone who insisted the windows had to be open in all weathers
So even though I like a good airing, I do it lots in the summer to compensate
We do have wall vents that are normally open though, so house doesn't really get stuffy.

kansasmum · 09/02/2010 18:44

Yes everyday. I throw back the duvet and open the windows wide while I am in the shower. Then close them and make the bed when I am out the shower and dry and dressed- then leave bathroom windows open on leaving the bathroom!

I air downstairs too-otherwise I feel its really stuffy- but only have windows open for about 10-15 mins.

Its funny though I never see ANY of my neighbours with their windows open!!

i keep our bedroom window most days and nights every, (unless it is baltic as it was in january) i prefer a cool bedroom asnd like the feeling of fresh air circulating.

i open the dcs windows during the day when the heating is off and close them when they get home and the heating comes on.

BooBooChicken · 09/02/2010 19:30

i keep our bedroom window open most days and every night.. is what i meant to say...

heQet · 09/02/2010 19:32

Yes. I do. I have to do it when everyone is out because they moan about it being freezing The other day I opened all the windows and the front door because it STANK! - you know that fusty smell, stale air and last night's farts.

DaisymooSteiner · 09/02/2010 20:20

No need to air downstairs as by the time I've opened the door umpteen times to let dog in and out/feed chickens/let cats in/take the kids to school it's had a good airing anyway! I open bedroom windows in the morning for a bit, but bathroom extractor fan is so good that we never get condensation or smells in there.

notsoteenagemum · 09/02/2010 20:32

I have the bedroom window open all the time, day and night I can't sleep when it's shut. I have the dc windows open while I hoover etc in there about 3 times a week, the bathroom window is open all the time, kitchen window is open when I am cooking and I open the dining room and living room windows when I clean in there daily.

I hope that there are no burglars on mn!

sarahken · 09/02/2010 21:41

I air all the bedrooms and bathroom from about 8am up till about 3pm everyday as I can stand any smells in the bedrooms. My husband goes mad as its freezing but I don't heat the rooms so its doesn't matter. They tend to warm back up naturally by bed time anyway. I would love to give downstairs a good airing, at least once a day open the back door and kitchen window for at least 15 mins but it often needs more. Roll on summer

Can't stand unaired houses.
