Boring I know, but how do you dispose of chicken carcusses?

DH has a thing about throwing out food because of maggots. Every thing else he blends and flushes .

He has just whined at me and demanded that I clean the maggots up when they start feasting on the chicken.

flushes it where?

CybilLiberty · 27/09/2009 14:40

We put ours out with food waste which is collected weekly

Lonicera · 27/09/2009 14:41

Our council runs a food recycling scheme so I wrap in newspaper and bin it

haven't had a problem with maggots yet

greensnail · 27/09/2009 14:49

We wrap up any food waste and put it straight into outdoor bin. Can't believe he can be bothered to blend it all And I have a huge maggot fear.

fatjac · 27/09/2009 14:49

We have a Green Cone to recycle all cooked food waste.

bronze · 27/09/2009 14:54

Not much left on a carcass by the time I've finished with it. Bag and bin it normally. Never had maggots

bronze · 27/09/2009 14:56

fatjac are they good?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 27/09/2009 15:03

He flushes it down the toilet?

ilovesprouts · 27/09/2009 15:06

i put our waste food in a bio bag we get off our local council, and they collect it weekly from our food caddy out side

pointydoug · 27/09/2009 15:15

Wowser. Blends and flushes?

We wrap it in a bin bag, then put it in the bin bag with other rubbish which goes in the bin to be collected fortnightly.

If we've had maggots, they haven't escaped.

cheekysealion · 27/09/2009 15:18

put it out for the foxes

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/09/2009 15:19

Why not get a food composter for the garden? We've got a Green Joanna, it takes garden waste, kitchen roll, shredded paper, all food waste cooked and raw. I think it cost £15.

I cannot believe that he blends and flushes everything! What do you do with other bones from chops etc?

pinkthechaffinch · 27/09/2009 15:37

I put it out for the foxes/rats/local moggies too. There is not normally anything left by the morning

bronze · 27/09/2009 15:45

not really good to be encouraging rats or foxes though

southeastastra · 27/09/2009 15:46

my mil used to leave food out for the fox she then wondered why she got rats

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 27/09/2009 15:49

Surely you would only get maggots if you let flies get at it (after cooking) though? So if it goes straight into a bin with lid or a plastic bag (or anything else airtight really) I wouldn't think you would get maggots. We just bin leftovers except what we can compost ourselves and have never had trouble.

you don't really flush food down the toilet? how mad is that?

CybilLiberty · 27/09/2009 16:26

But if he pushed it through a waste disposal unit it would all end up in the same pipes, so there is no difference. But the loo pipes might get a bit gunked up with grease

CoffeeCrazedMama · 27/09/2009 16:28

Whatever you do with it make sure you use it to make stock first! Is utterly delicious (just chuck in an onion, carrot, celery and bit of salt and boil for an hour or so).

greensnail · 27/09/2009 17:05

then make risotto - delicious

OrmIrian · 27/09/2009 17:07

Boil it up for stock and make soup.

Or alteratively forget about it and find the cat has disposed of it for me

pointydoug · 27/09/2009 17:08

do you keep the carcass in your soup, orm? Something's gotta be done with dem bones, no?

ShinyAndNew · 27/09/2009 18:05

Yes he flushes it down the loo. We have no food collection. Our bins are only emptied once a fortnight, we have had maggots before so he is concerned it will happen again.

That happened when we went away though and our bin didn't get put out so was there for a month.

I normally bag it and bin it, but doesn't like that. Most extra meat I pull off for the cats.
