Boring I know, but how do you dispose of chicken carcusses?

DH has a thing about throwing out food because of maggots. Every thing else he blends and flushes .

He has just whined at me and demanded that I clean the maggots up when they start feasting on the chicken.

I make stock then double bag it and bin

A neighbour freezes left overs till the day before then chucks them in bin, where they defrost on the way to the dump or wherever it is rubbish goes

I flush cat food tho- even if it has eggs on it.(In summer that can be after 45 mins yuck!!! Hence why mine now get dry food only until after sunset) I still flush all cat food unless it is totally dry

Wasps!!!!!!!!!!

I kid you not

We have no garden, just a yard so compost isn't really an option because then we would have the issue of what to do with the compost, though I am hoping to get an allotment soon, so maybe we could have one then.

I find his food flushing rather bizzare too, and neurotic.

Make stock with it, so the bones have no meat left and don't really smell of meat any more. Then put in plastic bag in dustbin, end of problem.

OrmIrian · 28/09/2009 08:10

Well yes, the final remnants are double-bagged and chucked (assuming no feline assistance) but if you boil it and pick all the flesh of there isn't much left.

PortAndLemon · 28/09/2009 08:14

By the time I've finished with a carcass it's only completely clean bones, and AFAIK those are of no interest to maggots. Even on Bones or CSI the insects don't eat the bones, after all...

LoveBeingAMummy · 28/09/2009 08:23

I double bag and throw in th eoutside bin.

Out of interest, how often does the clean out his bins if he is worried about maggots?

GrendelsMum · 28/09/2009 10:58

Yes, by the time you've made stock and taken all the flesh off, there's very very little left. And that goes into a bag, twisted and wrapped around on itself so that it's effectively doubled bagged, and then into the normal bin. The flies can't get at it, so no maggots.

CNyle · 28/09/2009 10:58

My chicken stock is wonderful - so make stock then double bag (asda or whatever is fine) and in the bin. Never had problems.

GetOrfMoiLand · 28/09/2009 11:34

I have weekly collections so would just put the chicken in the bin. As long as you don't leave it festering i can't imagine it would get maggots. never had maggots in my bin.

I do flush some food down the loo - things like currys/chillis whare are too runny to out in the bin and which might leak everywhere. My mum has alwasy thought I was deranged for doing this, just makes sense to me. Nice to know there is another nutter enlightened soul out there doing the same!

peanutbutterkid · 28/09/2009 11:37

How do you lot store your stock (blatent hijack)?

I take every last bit off the carcass I can, put it in a big pot overnight. Then I boil it up the next day to make gravy for the next meal. AFter rest of carcass cools down I double wrap it in old cereal bags and put them in the bin, not had maggots or other pests.

notevenamousie · 28/09/2009 11:50

In half litres in freezer bags in the freezer! Get about 2-2.5 L off a medium chicken.

choccyp1g · 28/09/2009 11:58

To stop the outside bin getting smelly, I allocate one drawer in the freezer for rubbish, and keep potentially smelly food leftovers in there until the night before bin-day when I bung it all out. [must remember to empty it out tonight]

londonmidwife · 28/09/2009 12:04

I make stock (not hard). Then use or freeze it.

Carcass then goes in sealed composter (fox proof) which is partially buried in the garden. All our food waste & teabags are composted. Ive never had a problem with vermin. Our outside bins never get smelly because only dry packaging goes in.

GrendelsMum · 30/09/2009 13:12

You can buy special re-usable bags for freezing soup - we use these for stock.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 30/09/2009 13:18

Wrap them in newspaper, then in carrier bag, then inside black bag in wheelie bin.
Pretty safe in there!

SparkyToo · 30/09/2009 20:19

I just put it in the bin - but have to make sure the bin lid is on properly, otherwise the foxes make a real mess of the bag to get to it - which they do!
