Ocado and Tescos - an act of betrayal?

NorthernLurker · 30/12/2008 12:41

Ocado have just started delivering locally and so today I had the Ocado deliver some 'nice' things and then Tesco come afterwards with loads of basics. Does this make me a shopping slut?

I prefer the phrase 'shopping tart' - suggesting that you are tarting yourself around for the best deal, cf. 'credit card tart' - slightly classier than slut?

Although (and I do not work for Ocado!) - Waitrose are price-matching Tesco on an awful lot of things so the difference in the weekly bill is not that much. Plus there are hardly ever any substitutions as it comes from a central warehouse rather than a shop - so if it's not in stock you can't order it.

I blardy love Ocado!

Ocado is not really more expensive than Tesco on basics though, are they?

Pom bears were actually cheaper on Ocado than Tesco!

I like the pretty colour plastic bags too. I'm a bad, bad person!

Ocado are fab. They had to substitute my gluten-free jam tarts in my Xmas order with something else and the delivery guy was horrified about it, asked us about six times if it was okay!

Also I love the way they text you to tell you the name of your driver, the vehicle reg number and - all important - the fruit or vegetable that adorns the van.

Ooh and I also love the way you can choose a slot when a van is already in your area.

And yes, they price match a lot of stuff with Tesco, so once you factor in two delivery charges you might want to move over to Ocado!

NorthernLurker · 30/12/2008 12:55

Yes I sort of wussed out this time - the house is bare and I needed a lot of stuff. The van was very pretty though - and they came three hours early having rung to check that was ok. Did mean I had to get dressed v quickly though!

No that was when I lost my nerve and went Tesco too - was looking for cheap kitchen roll and they don't really have that. I nearly ordered some Peter Rabbit kitchen roll then reality kicked in.

I didn't actually buy it - I just hovered over it with the mouse

If you do a lot of online grocery shopping you can also pay up front for "free delivery" which gives you priority slots etc (a la Amazon prime) (again, don't work for ocado, I promise!)

bellavita · 03/01/2009 12:47

Ocado have just started delivering in my area and I love the colour coded bags they use and they have even asked me if I wanted my shopping brought into the kitchen - I have never ever been asked that before by the "other" supermarkets.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 12:55

Bellavita - I don't think you're too far from me actually - think I've seen you posting about Betty's before?

I love the pretty bags too and the pretty van [bush]

I am sure I have read that Waitrose are going to do their own basic type range.

Flower3545 · 03/01/2009 13:14

bella Tesco always ask me if I want shopping brought into kitchen.

I wish ocado delivered up here though

Paperchase · 03/01/2009 13:15

LOL at 'shopping slut'

As long as they never find out about each other, no one will be hurt.

Now, what about that tasty little M&S down the road.....tempted? A little bit of extra curricular shopping, know what I mean, know what I mean, nudge nudge

LOL more at 'pretty bags'

This is the supermarket equivalent of 'hung like a whale.'

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 13:19

Paperchase - the guilt is terrible though! It's not that I need the pretty bags - I could break it off at anytime but somehow I think I'm helping them both by carrying on?

OP posts:
Paperchase · 03/01/2009 13:22

You are indeed in a co-dependent relationship and a slut.

That Ocado sure is a flash bastard. And sometimes he gives you free gifts, and you know when he's going to come. None of this coming before you're ready or an hour after you've gone off the boil and are now just frustrated. Because you have no shopping, that is.

I'm a total whore because I put it about in about 5 supermarkets, and I flaunt my Ocado bags in Sainsburys and my M&S bags in Tesco.

It's a miracle I haven't caught a disease, tbh.

Paperchase · 03/01/2009 13:23

And you realise I now need to make an Ocado order. You have given me a frisson!

MadameCastafiore · 03/01/2009 13:26

We buy everything from Ocado as we get the free delivery night slots which means the order is no dearer than Tesco and I hate to think what that awful huge chain does to farmers and the environment - and Ocado is just soo much nicer - Sainsburys are crap they subbed bananas for banana yogurt one day - who the feck eats banana yogurt it is vile stuff of the devil.

Oh and I have had loads of chocolate, newspapersd and wine thrown in for nothing from Ocado - he knows how to keep me hooked!

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 13:28

Oh good grief - Ocado gave me a free Times - I thoughht I was special!!!

I feel so betrayed!
