Amazing cleaning fix for heavily stained tea mugs

I might be late to the party but I have only just discovered this to deal with heavy brown tea staining (which also makes the mug surface rough).

Half a scoop of Vanish Oxi-Action in the mug, add boiling water, leave for 10-15 minutes, and the brown stain just lifts off like magic in a sort of 'skin'. Quite odd, I didn't expect it. You then rinse the mug and lightly scrub a few small bits, but the end result is like new and the glaze perfectly smooth again.

Again, sorry if you all know about this already!

I've never used it for this, but it makes sense given that it is a miracle for burnt on food.

Oh, and the other day I realised I hadn't looked at the filter in our cooker hood for ages and it was awful! It's got a thick metal.. mesh? Looks almost like knitting, and it was caked with grease etc. I ran out under a hot tap first and then put it in a sink with vanish. It was amazing!

@SquirrelsAreGo That makes total sense as well! Also, Vanish goes a bit mad when you put boiling water on it.

Astonish do one, you can clean your cutlery, metal water bottles etc. It's brilliant, i've been using it for years

Yes, thank you @needapokerface I had just ordered the Astonish from Amazon - I then was reading the reviews and saw someone say that Vanish had exactly the same ingredients but at a lower price per weight, so tried it out today on the mugs before the Astonish arrived.

I use bleach or a steradent tablet for tea stained cups works a treat

hardshoulderr · 18/09/2026 02:42

Bleach cheaper

elm26 · 18/09/2026 02:49

I use bleach, cold water, squint of bleach and leave for a couple hours then wash with washing up liquid x

Whorulestheroost1 · 18/09/2026 03:18

Hell yes to a tiny drop of bleach with warm water - then bung in dishwasher.

ADX · 18/09/2026 03:24

I have tried this and agree works well however had ran out of vanish one day so used biological soap powder (powder rather than liquid) also works brilliantly

Dsfdf · 18/09/2026 03:29

Milton is also excellent for this

ProfessorofDarkArts · 18/09/2026 04:59

Bicarbonate of soda is my go to for this and loads of other household jobs.

mathanxiety · 18/09/2026 05:03

Bread soda plus a drop or two of water made into a paste in the mug, then rubbed around for a few minutes by fingertips will do the trick too.

unsync · 18/09/2026 05:20

Steradent tablets are great as pp said, but they're brilliant for getting blood and other stains out of fabric too. I also use them on my water bottle to clean the lid and straw.

spaghettiandicecream · 18/09/2026 05:36

Washing powder is also good, just a teaspoon, it contains bicarbonate of soda which does the trick. I think Pink Stuff and Astonish also contain bicarbonate of soda, also great.

Bleach cheaper

But can leave an unpleasant lingering smell.

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 18/09/2026 06:31

Salt little bit of cold water scrub rinse.

HariboHippo · 18/09/2026 06:34

I use this too. You only need a teaspoon for a mug, not a tablespoon as it says.
Given the OP’s post, I am going to work out which is cheaper.

That’s what I use. I can’t always find it 8n the supermarket, but Amazon do it for £2.99 and free delivery for Prime members. Amazing stuff.

MinnieCauldwell · 18/09/2026 07:46

Ariel bio plus a little stain remover for stained cups, do them weekly.

limetrees32 · 18/09/2026 07:46

I have pale IKEA work surfaces and a partner who is unable to make tea or coffee without liberally anointing them .
I've tried lots of things but this Asevi laundry spray does the job brilliantly

DozyCrow · 18/09/2026 07:50

I also use the steradent tablets. Works a treat on mine.
