Amazing cleaning fix for heavily stained tea mugs

I might be late to the party but I have only just discovered this to deal with heavy brown tea staining (which also makes the mug surface rough).

Half a scoop of Vanish Oxi-Action in the mug, add boiling water, leave for 10-15 minutes, and the brown stain just lifts off like magic in a sort of 'skin'. Quite odd, I didn't expect it. You then rinse the mug and lightly scrub a few small bits, but the end result is like new and the glaze perfectly smooth again.

Again, sorry if you all know about this already!

Soda crystals do the same thing, much cheaper too. £1 for 1kg

I’ve always used soda crystals

HoppityBun · 18/09/2026 19:57

Sodium percarbonate

I also put half a sterident or equivalent tablet in.the toilet bowl to get really clean.

Decorhate · 18/09/2026 20:04

I'm not a tea drinker but we just table salt when I was a child. And a bit of elbow grease!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/09/2026 20:14

I used to clean the minging cups at work with a bit of salt on slightly damp paper towel, it worked well.

logstore · 18/09/2026 20:56

I use Milton. Takes 5 mins.

shellyleppard · 18/09/2026 20:58

I use a denture tablet left overnight. Give the mug a really good clean though

NotMeNoNo · 18/09/2026 21:00

One scoop of Vanish is enough for a whole wash though. This reminds me of when MIL suggested I clean my mugs with a tablespoon of (expensive concentrated) washing powder. You can clean them with a much smaller amount of product and a green scourer too.

I'm a big fan of Elbow Grease cup cleaner

itsgettingatadchill · 18/09/2026 21:02

Ooh thanks op! I’ll give it a try tomorrow

Lavendersong · 18/09/2026 21:08

Mine come up perfect every time in the dishwasher. Always gets rid of brown tea stains. Never been an issue

Pinkocsb · 19/09/2026 10:45

Those magic erasers are great too. Or Milton’s.

itsgettingatadchill · 19/09/2026 10:55

Tried this this morning and my mugs have honestly never been cleaner! (We don’t have a dishwasher) I usually use bleach but this works so much better and without the horrible smell, however, be aware that once you add the boiling water to the oxy it will froth up and overflow massively so do it in the sink (which I didn’t 🙈)

As I have just posted on another thread; magic erasers are not great. They work a bit like sandpaper and remove coatings and finishes. Just look at what they do to gloss paint. Yes your mug will come up clean but the mug will stain much quicker next time. They are also made of all sorts of nasties. Just google it.

Sugar works on a paper towel too.

Sugar works on a paper towel too.

Bet it doesn’t!

Using a green scourer is abrasive, meaning the surface will become scratched and therefore increasingly absorbs stains.

caringcarer · 19/09/2026 11:45

Just throw them in the dishwasher. It removes all grime.

Sorry I should have mentioned the explosive frothing!

Yes, obviously I just made that up. I bet you it does, how much do you want to put down?

Abra1t · 19/09/2026 14:25

Magic white eraser sponge works on ours.

Astonish do one, you can clean your cutlery, metal water bottles etc. It's brilliant, i've been using it for years

This is what I use for mugs and cutlery - do them about once every two months and they are like new

CharlotteStreetW1 · 19/09/2026 14:31

I am a total heathen and put the milk in with the teabag and then the boiling water. I know, shock horror!

Tea tastes fine and, more to the point, no stains. Prevention is better etc.

Pelsall116 · 19/09/2026 18:07

Steradent tablets are brilliant for removing stains. I keep a supply of steradent for this purpose; neither myself nor DH have dentures

Bunny65 · 19/09/2026 18:53

You can also just use bicarbonate of soda in hot water
