My house smells like 'hoover'

likelysuspect · 08/09/2026 20:58

Do you know what I mean?

The cleaner came today and normally I come home and the home smells fresh and of the cleaning stuff she uses

Today I noticed a very strong smell of 'hoover' in the hallway

And now in the living room

I have never had that smell in the house, I cant work it out?

I havent even got a hoover that smells of hoover when you use it.

What does hoover smell of?

hididdlyho · 08/09/2026 21:13

Are the filters due a clean or need replacing?

Civilservant · 08/09/2026 21:15

Oh I recall this smell, it was usually when Mum had burst the hoover bag! Have sometimes smelled it when emptying the Dyson hoover.

TheBossOfMe · 08/09/2026 21:16

It’s your hoover that smells of hoover. They shouldn’t smell if you clean and air them regularly.

Thesearenotthedroids · 08/09/2026 21:17

I find this if DH uses it and he has tried to hoover up water (don't ask!)

Give the whole thing a clean, filters washed etc. And you can add a few fabric softener beads into the bag so it wafts good smells out rather than musty.

Bogstandardname · 08/09/2026 21:18

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. The hoover needs a clean and fresh filters.

I have a feeling we replaced them recently. I only used it myself on Sunday and it didnt smell.

That is very interesting you say that. She is utterly clumsy for a start

But years ago, I had a hoover (still got it but we dont really use it) and I had it in a cupboard that I didnt realise had a leak. And the leak went over the hoover. And ever since then that hoover has had a strange smell to it that you cant get rid of (hence why we dont use it)

Do you still have it? Could she have used it?

DancinOnTheCeiling · 08/09/2026 21:27

This is so interesting. I had a hoover like that OP, and despite cleaning it, cleaning the filter, the hose, adding a new bag etc it still stank. I could not figure out what it was. I now have a different hoover because the smell of the old one was horrible, and the new one seems fine despite having had it for a couple of years now I think… it’s such a mystery isn’t it?

Yes its upstairs but she wouldnt have used it downstairs, that wouldnt make any sense and upstairs doesnt smell funny. So why would she use it downstairs but not upstairs.

In fact thats odd, that upstairs doesnt smell funny

Trouble is, OH has come home and now cooking his dinner and its pork and onions so now Im struggling to do a sniff investigation

Will have to see how it is tomorrow

Yes trouble is both the hoovers are Miele, they aint cheap, Ive looked into the current models for what we have and they cost a fortune which Im not prepared to pay out.

Aerialanne · 08/09/2026 21:30

Are you sure she doesn’t bring her own hoover?

That’s frustrating. I hope you get to the bottom of it @likelysuspect

Yes quite sure. She has broken my hoover several times, she doesnt have her own equipment at all, she tells me what cleaning products she likes.

Put a small pile of lenor scent boosters on the floor and hoover them up if you have a bagged hoover. It’s an absolute game changer and gives such a nice scent.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 08/09/2026 22:09

I hope your hoover smells better than mine. The poor thing had to hoover a load of curry powder and then three dog poos disguised as large raisins. The operator of the hoover on both occasions was not me.

Oh Im so sorry, that is so funny!!!

If it’s a Miele can you put a hepa filter in? These are great! I’d my ho9ver starts to smell funny it’s usually the filter than needs changing or the bag. Often it’s because somebody has hoovered something a bit wet or from bits of food / crumbs in the kitchen, but a new bag and filter sorts it out! That’s if you mean that musty hoover type smell and not a burning faulty hoover smell….

Wonkybaby · 08/09/2026 22:47

My hoover has that smell. I have tried the Lenor scent boost things but I just get stink+lenor.

Yes its got a hepa filter

Im wondering if the floor was wet or she spilt something and hoovered it up

I do this & it works really well. Just a subtle scent but it lasts for a good while

The house today does not smell like hoover

I cant work it out. I got home too late to use the hoover so another day goes by without checking it out.
