Will the council empty a privately bought garden waste bin?

For the council to provide you a brown garden waste bin and empty it every week, it will cost about £70 a year where we are.

Just wondered if I were to buy a brown bin off e-bay for about £5 - will the council empty it or ignore it....?

Has anyone else done this..?

Sadly, not an option, as I'm sure most people would go for that instead of the full year

Agreed, but they can't have the bin lorries sitting around idle all winter and having to lay off the binmen/women.

Wow our collection including bin is £48.50! I’ve got a bargain!

Me too !

It's a bit like taking your own scissors to the hairdresser and expecting a free cut.

This thread has made me realise I'm lucky too. £48 per annum here and you get the bin free. They collect every fortnight.

Yes, and we are paying top dollar for it - and there are loads of things they were supposed to do and haven't

That’s as maybe, which needs to be taken up with them, however you can’t decide that you’re going to not pay for services in exchange!

I'm not turning on the council - ours appear to be pretty useless at the best of times and hence I don't feel we are getting value for the money we pay

Or in this case don’t pay

Me too !

My council does free garden waste collections every fortnight all year round, seems like that's a real bargain!

EmilyStar · 19/08/2026 00:00

They send out stickers for the garden waste bins where I live too.

Otherwise everyone would just join the scheme for one year to get the bin, and then do what you’re suggesting to get free garden waste collections forever.

Although if I was only generating enough garden waste for 2-3 collections a year, I’d probably just go to the tip with it rather than pay for the garden waste scheme.

Wow !
Is your Community Charge high to make up for it ?!

Ours is a bargain - £35 a year (although they don't collect in January and February)

Edited

I pay £40 a year and no collections from October-March

Stinkybooks · 19/08/2026 00:42

Its really not about which bin (although you do need to use the one they provide) its about needing to pay the annual fee if you want to use the service.
I decided not to use the service so I dont pay the fee.

I don't actually know! It always seems very high but I don't know how it compares. I get single person discount but the equivalent full charge is £2992p.a. for band F.

The Charge here ( Lancs ) is £3598.67p.a. for a Band F - so you're getting a good deal !

In a way...

We already pay about £4000 a year council tax (band H) and we don't generate much garden waste.

2-3 vigorous prunes a year and we usually take it to the council tip in one of those ton-sandbags

Just wondered if we bought a brown bin, would they take it?

It re-cycles an unwanted bin if nothing else

Just seems daft to pay £70 for 2-3 collections a year

Well don't pay the charge and get rid of your own garden waste if its only 2 or three times a year. They won't take it unless you pay.
