Will the council empty a privately bought garden waste bin?

NoisyBrickDog · 17/08/2026 13:38

For the council to provide you a brown garden waste bin and empty it every week, it will cost about £70 a year where we are.

Just wondered if I were to buy a brown bin off e-bay for about £5 - will the council empty it or ignore it....?

Has anyone else done this..?

If you think that is abuse you must be new around here.

NoisyBrickDog · 17/08/2026 15:56

No - it was a question. I was expecting either 'yes' or 'no' instead of abuse

i wondered why i don't come on this site very often...!

It wouldn't hurt to reflect on your question though, to understand why people have responded as they have.

Raspbellies · 17/08/2026 16:07

No. You have to pay for £70 a year garden waste collection.

I only need mine once a month but would rather pay the 70 and not have to take the car to the tip.

NoisyBrickDog · 17/08/2026 13:52

Don't worry - I'll buy a bin through the council ready for the autumn de-clutter in that case.

The bin can just sit empty until spring 2027

Most garden waste bins aren't collected between November and March though so you wouldn't be unusual in not using it again until spring! If you want your garden waste collected just pay up like everyone else in your area and stop thinking you are a special case.

outdooryone · 17/08/2026 16:30

No, the council will not take a brown bin with garden waste in here without checking the yearly sticker/license on the back that also has the house address. They do take brown bins with just food waste in. How much this is actually checked, no idea....
So yep, cough up or take your own crap to the tip.
Or, even better, compost on site?

Yamadori · 17/08/2026 16:33

summater · 17/08/2026 13:40

In my council you have a label to put on the garden waste bin to show you have paid up and when it expires

Same here.

bugalugs45 · 17/08/2026 16:34

Can you share 1 with a neighbour ? Thats what we do , and go halves , doesn’t take much organising to not use it at the same time

That used to be us then they started doing it year round to justify a huge price hike but of course we don't really need it in winter so not a very good deal for the user.

Our council doesn't empty the garden waste bins in the winter months anyway - only from early March until mid-November. So it is a waste to subscribe now, do it in the spring. Between now and then just continue to go to the tip.

Why don't you ask them...do update us on how they said "not a chance" in a professional way.

SocksTalk · 17/08/2026 16:40

Do your immediate neighbours get a brown bin collected?
If they do, and they don't put one out this week, you could put yours on the footpath where the boundary is and see what happens.

Don't worry - we will pay for the service. I'll need somewhere to put the grass cuttings from the council grass verges in any case.

I'll also ask for an update on our 3 green bins which they said they would replace and the road-sweeper which is supposed to make an appearance every now and then.

Every week for a year?

As a one off.

PolkaDotPorridge · 17/08/2026 16:45

I can’t believe you are asking this OP! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Thisismyfinesthour · 17/08/2026 16:56

Why the fuck am I paying for green waste collection if others think they can get collection for free? That idea can jog right off. Pay for it or take it to the dump like other people have to.

NoisyBrickDog · 17/08/2026 14:03

For god sake - I just asked a question, a simple yes or no would have done

I am now being accused of being Britain's most wanted thief

Don't worry - as I said before i will buy a bin, so you can all sleep safely!

You have posted on a discussion forum yet expect just a Yes or No response?!

Sleepthief · 17/08/2026 17:01

Our LA issues a sticker when you pay. Without the sticker the bin doesn’t get collected

BCSurvivor · 17/08/2026 17:05

NoisyBrickDog · 17/08/2026 13:45

In a way...

We already pay about £4000 a year council tax (band H) and we don't generate much garden waste.

2-3 vigorous prunes a year and we usually take it to the council tip in one of those ton-sandbags

Just wondered if we bought a brown bin, would they take it?

It re-cycles an unwanted bin if nothing else

Just seems daft to pay £70 for 2-3 collections a year

Why should you feel more entitled to want to get a free service on the basis that you're Band H???
It really doesn't matter what band you are, the principle is the same for everyone.

ThirdStorm · 17/08/2026 17:11

I've avoiding paying for the green waste for years, told myself it was easy to take it to the dump myself but as the years have gone on it is inconvenient. I got the bin two months ago and its been out 3 out 4 collections so far. I will definitely get lots of use towards the end of the year too. I'm definitely pruning more just to make sure it gets filled!

But in answer to OPs question, of course they won't collect a random bin if you haven't subscribed (paid) for the service. Also a random bin won't fit their collection lift so they would be prevented from taking it.

If you buy it and do an autumn decluttering why won’t they pick it up before the spring? A lot of them collect until November.

If you are going to have green stuff in your bin for a few months it might start turning into compost? Or is that not long enough?

HexInductionHour · 17/08/2026 17:14

@NoisyBrickDog just an idea, some people i know share the cost if you have a neighbour in a similar situation

My council collect them all through the year, every 2 weeks. I don’t use mine much, but as it works out to about £1.25 a week….

Anti-social

For a simple question that just needed a 'yes or no' reply really

I just checked:

  1. a thief…nobody called you a thief, in fact you are the only one who used that term. One poster did express surprise that you were not expecting people to think that theft was unreasonable.
  2. anti-social…nobody called you this. One poster did say that this was an antisocial way to behave, but that is true.
  3. entitled…nobody called you this, someone just mentioned that you had a sense of entitlement, again not abuse.
  4. cheapskate - yes someone told you that you were a cheapskate, were they wrong? It’s hardly abuse is it.
  5. lack of morals…well this one isn’t really something you can call someone. But you did display a lack of morals, after all you know that a service costs money, and you tried to trick the waste removal men into providing this service for free.

If you just wanted a straightforward yes or no then you should have just added a poll at the top.

All I’ve seen from this thread is people answer your question, add some context and logic around why they’ve said yes or no, and then you’ve been shitty about it. I think you showed your ass when you called it vitriolic abuse.

NoisyBrickDog · 17/08/2026 18:47

Don't worry Borded, I have decided to get a brown bin through the proper channels, so rest easy now.

And if the bin wagon eats another wheelie bin of mine - I'll just go and buy another one, that will be number 4 - hate to think people might see me as a cheapskate.

And I'll continue to cut the council's grass and sweep their gutters, so nobody can judge me on my lack of morals or sense of entitlement.

Next time I have a simple question to ask on here, I'll put a poll up
