Hmm.

Our house is a 2 up, 2 down, with no hall. Stairs are in living room. Storage is lacking.

For those who have toys in bedrooms, how do you stop your children getting them out and messing around?

colditz · 27/06/2008 15:00

Anna8888 · 27/06/2008 15:05

Make up lives: where you do your make-up (bathroom? dressing table?) in a little bag or a drawer

Hairbrushes live: where you do your hair (for me a styling brush in the bathroom, near the hairdryer, and a Mason Pearson in my handbag)

Wellies live: in the cupboard right by the front door

Laundry basket lives: in the laundry room, next to the washer and dryer

Toys live: in a toy cupboard in my daughter's bedroom for small things; big things mostly in her room though dolls' houses tend to be in the dining room

Spare coats live: on hanger on a rail in the front hall cupboard (same as wellies) - but we don't do many "spares"

Shoes live: on a shoe rack in the bottom of each person's wardrobe except for boys (same shoe rack but in their room, easily available)

cafebistro · 27/06/2008 15:05

make up lives in make up bag in bathroom
hairbrushes live on bedroom dresser
wellies live in utility room
laundry basket lives in my bedroom
toys live in toy boxes in kids bedrooms
spare coats live in wardrobes or on hook on the back of utility door
spare shoes live in utility or bottom of wardrobes

Mercy · 27/06/2008 15:06

make up lives - don't wear it, but my toiletries are in my room
hairbrushes live - mine in my room, dc downstairs on bookshelf
wellies live - by the back door
laundrey basket lives - in my bedroom
toys live- living room and dc bedrooms
spare coats live - my wardrobe or hang off the banisters
shoes live - either in wardrobe or shelf in tiny hallway.

Colditz, do you have a landing, a back garden?

Anna8888 · 27/06/2008 15:07

colditz - we bought very attractive babyfoot hooks/rails for the boys and installed one each in the bedroom so that they could take off their clothes and hang things up easily. My partner didn't believe it would work (and kind of wanted them to use a wardrobe) but it has worked a dream and we no longer have to deal with clothes on floor/back of chairs

Anna8888 · 27/06/2008 15:08

There are fantastic bright red metal American football-type lockers in Ikea (50 euros each) that the boys have too. Space saving as tall and narrow.

clam · 27/06/2008 15:08

Make up: wicker basket in top drawer of dressing table. Attractive (expensive )bottles on display.
Hairbrushes: in dressing table drawer
Wellies: in large box in garage
Laundry: oh God. No proper solution, depends where in the system it is. Dirty: in baskets in bathroom and each bedroom. To be ironed: in basket(s) on kitchen floor!
Toys: shelving unit in garage, wicker toy chest in sitting room and cupboard/shelves in kids' own rooms. Need to cull regularly when DCs not around.
Shoes: ventilated cupboards - one in porch, one under stairs.
Spare coats: coat rack in hall for current season (but I hate this mess and am looking for another idea) or in spare cupboard in DD's room. Some (ski jackets/barbours etc..)on hooks in garage

BroccoliSpears · 27/06/2008 15:10

I thought children were supposed to get their toys out and mess around.

cafebistro · 27/06/2008 15:11

colditz- you cant really stop the kids from getting toys out but at least they're all in one area. I tend to put 'things' with lots of pieces-jigsaws, tea sets etc on top of the wardrobes so they cant throw them around and then get them down when they want to play with them.

Mercy · 27/06/2008 15:15

Colditz, I think we are in a similar situation - no garage, utility room, dining room, playroom...

WingsofaAngel · 27/06/2008 15:23

colditz · 27/06/2008 16:20

Sorry I have been misunderstood re toys.

I mean at night.

Ds1 is very very fiddley and I am concerned that if i PUT THE toys in their room, he will get everything out all night.

I don't have a landing I can do more than turn around on, I don't have a shed or outbuilding, I think, to be honest, I just have too much 'stuff'. I need to cull the amount of 'stuff' I have by 2/3

Make-up - top of drawer of dressing tableHairbrush - middle drawer of dressing table along with hairdryer etc (DDs on her dressing table)Wellies - DS's and DD's in cupboard in utility room (only have one small cupboard in there), mine too big for cupboard so on floor in there - needs sortingLaundry basket - dirty in en-suite, clean on worktop in utility
Toys - on shelves/under beds in childrens' bedroms apart from some of DD's larger items - double buggy, playmobil house etc downstairs
Spare coats - in wardrobes but mine and DH's winter ones are in suitcases in the loft.
Shoes - in wardrobes - but my boots are all in the loft.

My children would not dream of playing with their toys when they are supposed to be in bed although I do suspect we might hit the reading under the covers stage with DS.

my make up lives in a make-up bag in my knicker/tight drawer in our bedroom (do make-up standing up in front of wardrobe mirror)

hairbrushes live in low drawer in same wardrobe (good idea to keep one downstairs too though)

shoes live in same wardrobe (kept in their boxes - labelled) some on floor of wardrobe and some on high shelf about hanging space - every time I buy a new pair I turf out an old pair and give 'em to charity shop

wellies on piece of newspaper by kitchen door (leading to back garden)

laundry baskets live near washing machine and tumble drier

personally I don't like toys in bedrooms except for one or two bears (it's much easier to put them back in one place imo - preferably without having to treck up and down stairs) and they are always brought downstairs to be played with ... but depends on ages of your dc

Spare coats live in roof in tall 'wardrobe like' cardboard box I bought off the removing men for a £5

Countingthegreyhairs · 27/06/2008 17:09

Sorry - meant to say - so keep toys downstairs confined to one shelving unit and two toy boxes. When they get full it's time for a turf out.
