Coverless duvets - do they feel the same as a normal duvet?

I’m considering getting coverless duvets. All the photos I see of them on beds make them look a bit stiff and lightweight, like ornamental bedspreads rather than duvets. I like a heavy, soft duvet that I can wrap under my feet and mould around me and it will stay like that. My current duvet is synthetic but feels as close as you can get to feather and down without being feather and down.
Would I hate a coverless duvet or do they make one that fits my preferences? Any recommendations?

I would save up for a real down duvet. One that comes in two parts that can be used separately (spring/autumn and summer) or clipped together for winter.

We have coverlets duvets and they definitely don’t feel stiff. The one my husband has is a heavier tog and feels like a normal heavy duvet to me. It definitely keeps you warm and you can wrap up in it and snuggle down.

My son and I have lightweight ones that you probably wouldn’t like, but they are clearly marked as such.

I don’t need to save up for a down duvet. I threw mine away a long long time ago when I learned how dreadfully cruel the down/ feather ‘collection’ process was.

I’ve recently got a 4.5 tog coverless duvet and I will definitely get a winter tog one when the weather cools. Sooo easy and soft and comfortable. Game changer for me

Someone really needs to invent an easy way to change a duvet cover. They are a huge pain. If men did the beds, they may well have done so by now.

Or just use a sheet underneath and a throw on top of your usual duvet.

I switched to wool duvets.

How easy are they to wash? Surely they don't fit in a normal washing machine

Can you just put them in the washing machine?

We have a double one and it fits in the washing machine, a 9kg Bosch one.

Simple to wash. I have a super king winter weight one and that goes inside my standard size washing machine.

I hang it over a bannister afterwards and it’s dry in 3/4 hours or sometimes give a quick tumble with wool balls to minimise creasing.

We’ve all got them here now, and I’ve just bought lightweight ones for the hotter weather. I am a convert and wouldn't dream
of going back.

That's why we ditched our normal duvets for coverless. For the record my husband was much better at and more frequently did change them!

I have bought a couple of the Night lark single ones and they are very synthetic feeling. I prefer high thread count cotton duvet covers so won't be making the switch. I think they might be good for kids' beds though.

I have the ones from Asda and love them. I wasn't sure if it would be warm enough in Winter, but it is. I have no problem putting a double in my 9kg machine.

How are you washing them?

@downhillfromhier most of the Night Lark ones are microfibre, which is probably why they feel synthetic, because they are.

I only have very light ones and still struggle to fit in my washer. Admittedly it's not 9kg like some of you are talking about.
I prefer the idea of being able to wash the whole thing, as duvets seldom get washed often, and there's only a thin layer of cover between them and our bodies.

Yes apart from the very expensive cotton waffle. I think they mislead people as they describe synthetic microfibre duvets using real material names such as linen, seersucker etc

I think it would feel fine. But can you wash it? Dry it easily? That’s what puts me off.

I love mine - so easy to wash! Just chuck in the washer and when out they dry in a couple of hours!
Mine is the heavier tog and you can really wrap up in it. I have a big blanket I throw over in winter. So practical.
