Coverless duvets - do they feel the same as a normal duvet?

I’m considering getting coverless duvets. All the photos I see of them on beds make them look a bit stiff and lightweight, like ornamental bedspreads rather than duvets. I like a heavy, soft duvet that I can wrap under my feet and mould around me and it will stay like that. My current duvet is synthetic but feels as close as you can get to feather and down without being feather and down.
Would I hate a coverless duvet or do they make one that fits my preferences? Any recommendations?

I also use a sheet between me and duvet - did this with normal duvets - and have a really high thread count sheet

I thought these might be the answer to all my problems and bought one that wasn't cheap and got good reviews, but it's all nylony, like a sleeping bag. Are they not all like that, can you get cotton ones?

Surely it would be much easier to use a top sheet and then the cover doesn't need changing often?

Do men who live alone not change their covers?

Our son has them in his house but they feel uncomfortably synthetic - like a throwback to the nylon sheets many people used back in the seventies. We now bring our own cotton bedding when we visit.

I have one for camping but it's a bit stiff for all the time. It wouldn't be cosy in the cold, but I don't camp in the cold.

We all have them, ours all have a cotton outer, all very soft, not stiff, I find they do feel very light, even the winter one, so it may not give you the feeling of weight that you need.

I sent mine back to night lark as it felt synthetic and I am hot enough at night.
Cotton ones are available but more pricey

I have a 6 tog king size duvet and it fits in a normal washing machine.

Another one here who got a Nightlark one. Gave me terrible night sweats so have donated it to DP and he uses it in his campervan. Very odd texture.

they do wash and dry really easily though on a positive note.

Where did you buy the cotton outer ones please?

Nightlark, you can get them in cotton outers, I think they just do it in waffle now

@FiniteSagacity George at Asda do a coverless duvet that's polycotton (52% polyester 48% cotton) if that's any use to you. It feels cotton-like and not at all synthetic. Only comes in two colours though.

I can’t imagine a duvet which isn’t feather. I don’t find that they feel right, thats the problem.

We can't have feathers, my husband is allergic, and I also don't like the idea much.

We use a top sheet with the coverless- top sheet gets washed every 5 days or so, coverless every 3 weeks

Thank you @Simonjt and @SilenceInside I would need cotton as eczema can react (especially in hot weather) to synthetic or man made fibres (I’m a fuss bag like the princess and the pea, I know).

It seems wasteful to wash the whole thing everytime and a bit boring to always have the same design.

I did my time making beds professionally as a teenager. So useregular covers no problem.

Have you tried the burrito method? No fiddling about looking for corners, just lay everything out, roll, tuck and unroll. I can’t fully explain it but there are lots of videos. I use it on our king size duvets all the time.
