A place for everything - can you help?!

ChoccyHobknob · 15/02/2026 20:53

So Im trying hard to make sure everything has a place to live in an effort to be tidier (!).

However there's some necessities which just dont seem to have anywhere to live and so clutter up surfaces in the house :/

Where do you keep yours?!!
* hair brushes
Ours migrate between the hall table, bathroom sink, dining table, kitchen side.
* hot water bottle(s)
Currently living by the log basket in the living room
* main handbag
gets dumped by sofa/telly
* hair clips/bands
One mug in bathroom and one on a book case full but more accumulate on surfaces!
* fire lighter
Currently on mantle piece

If anyone can assist in helping me find a place for these and other clutter I'd be very grateful!

We all have our own hairbrushes i have a section of my vanity unit for hairbrushes, bobbles, spray etc. We no longer have hot water bottles we have plug in blankets that are in a basket at side of sofa, main hand bag goes on a peg under coat.

User415373 · 15/02/2026 20:58

Hi, not much help but...

  • hairbrush. I have 3 - one on my hair box with straighteners etc, one in a kitchen drawer where we also keep chargers etc, one in my daughters hair caddy which lives on the bookcase in the living room as that's where I do her hair. I also keep all my hair bands in this but I don't put my hair up much.
  • I don't have a handbag or a hot water bottle!
  • fire lighter. I have a small basket that I keep firelights and the lighter in. It lives on the shelves in the alcove by the fire and looks decorative.
ThroughTheRedDoor · 15/02/2026 21:00

I have a pot for hairbands and hairbrushes - on my makeup desk.

I have a hook on the back of the kitchen door for the hot water bottles. Where my main hand bag also lives!

A fire lighter being on the mantle sounds perfect to me!

PawMaw · 15/02/2026 21:01

I love this game. I hate clutter. Everything needs a 'home' in my house. Where I keep mine -

  • hair brushes - little pot on dressing table and a in the divan bed drawer with hair dryer/straighteners/curlers

  • hot water bottle - on top of wardrobe

  • main handbag - hook in hall cupboard with jackets/coats

  • hair clips/bands - bathroom drawer/drawer under bed/desk tidy in office. I like them around for easy access.

  • fire lighter - I don't need one but would get a little decorative pot for the mantel I think.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/02/2026 21:02

My hairbrushes and hair clips/scrunchies all live in 2 boxes on top of a storage unit.

Hot water bottle in bedroom.

TommorrowsToday · 15/02/2026 21:05

hair brushes
One in our en suite.
One in DD's room.
One in my handbag.
One in the drawer of the Welsh dresser in the kitchen for speedy pre school brushing.

hot water bottle(s)
In a built in cupboard in my bedroom.

main handbag
When in active service on a chair in the kitchen. When not, on my desk in study.

hair clips/bands
DD has these spread thoughout her room, but we have a set of clips and bands in the drawer of the Welsh dresser in our kitchen so we can always find one.

ChoccyHobknob · 15/02/2026 21:08

Ok I will start with handbag on tue coat rack. That's a good place!

We dont have a kitchen door for hot water bottles and Im afraid they would be lost in the bedroom but I could put them under the bedside table 🤔

Hair brushes - I have a make up box on entrance table but its only A5 size but my Denby may fit! And one in the cupboard in the bathroom would help.

Hair bands - dd is 3 and wears lots of clips hence they multiply. Currently in a mason jar on the book case but I think it looks untidy! Plus its bursting. I need a new device or caddy. And to keep my bands in the bathroom mug (mine are bog standard black ones!).

Hairbrushes go in a drawer in my vanity and then I have one in the bathroom cupboard, my handbag I hang up in the coat cupboard, my hot water bottle lives in a little ottoman storage thing in the living room or in my bedside table drawer, hair clips and bands also live in the same drawer as my hairbrushes in a little like clear plastic drawer sorter, firelighters live at the bottom of the basket we keep our inside firewood in

lifeisgoodrightnow · 15/02/2026 21:14

Picture each item and pretend it’s lost. Where would you look for it first ? Not it’s dumping ground but if you’d put it away. That’s its home.

Luxlumos · 15/02/2026 21:16

hair brushes
Drawer in downstairs bathroom - it still migrates but that’s where it gets tidied to, and where everyone can find it.
hair clips/bands
same as hair brushes
hot water bottle(s)
in a basket in living room with some rolled up extra blankets.
main handbag
has its own special hook on the back of the door in the coat closet
fire lighter
I have a poncey jar of extra long matches instead.

limetrees32 · 15/02/2026 21:17

I recently came across the expression " clutter bucket " .
I love to corral things with related uses or quantities of the same item and I'm a big clutter bucket adopter.
Not always a bucket.
Wide necked jars are good as you can see what's in them

A place for everything - can you help?!
User415373 · 15/02/2026 21:18

The hair caddy is really useful. It was a nappy caddy when she was younger! It has all the clips, bands etc in. Hair bands are in a smaller zip up pencil case type thing. I also keep things like nail clippers, the thermometer, sudocrem, a few plasters in it. We sometimes do school hair in the living room and sometimes in the kitchen so it's handy that it's useable.
I don't stress on keeping the caddy itself really neat and organised. I've realised I can't maintain it. I know what's in there and I know I can find it in seconds without needs loads of extra organisation boxes etc inside. I've changed my attitude on this lately and it helps so much. Same with the kitchen drawer. It's got chargers (these are shoved into in a big drawstring fabric bag), hairbrush, a few pens, wipes, sunglasses, suncream, a tape measure to name some. Handy things that I need very regularly. I do not let it accumilate junk though, and it's absolutely not for stuff without a home. I sort through sometimes it it starts getting full but it doesn't really as I know exactly what's in it.

  • hair brushes
One in spare bedroom where the hairdryer lives, one in the kitchen, as I often brush my hair downstairs during the day, and one in the car which also identifies as a camper van, so I have duplicates of stuff that lives in there!

  • hot water bottle(s)
Only got 2 and they both live in a cupboard in the car as I only tend to use them when camping.

  • main handbag
Usually on the sofa next to where I sit.

  • hair clips/bands
Everywhere, yet I can still never find one when I need one! Some upstairs, one wrapped around each hairbrush (in theory, although they disappear), several in my bedside cabinet, a couple round the handbrake in the car, probably loads of clips and bands in my handbag, and I’d put money on it that there’s a scrunchie in the dog’s bed as he’s obsessed with them!

  • fire lighter
In the car with my folding fire pit!

Nickyknackered · 15/02/2026 21:20

Things go in the nearest place where i use them. I brush my hair downstairs in the living room mirror so I have one in the drawer if tb unit. Also one upstairs in my lotions and potions basket.

Hot water bottle in my pyjama drawer

Handbag on coat hook in the hall

Couple of hair ties on my hair brush handle. Don't use clips etc

Firefighter is also on mantlepiece behind the candles I use it for.

FindingMeno · 23/02/2026 20:04

Hairbrush in bedroom dressing table drawer.
Don't use hot water bottles.
Handbag in a cubby with a door by front door.
Hair ties in a pot on dressing table.
Firelighters tucked out of sight behind something on the mantlepiece.
I'm a believer in not having duplicates everywhere.
Decide where you're going to use something and keep it there. I also tend to keep like with like. Stationery is all in one place together, as are cleaning supplies, tablecloths/ napkins, medical stuff etc etc.
Much easier to keep track of what you have, saves space, and easy to check what you have.

Love this!

Hair brush with hair products and tools in basket in wardrobe. Mini hairbrush in handbag. DH and DS’s small brushes in bathroom cupboard. DD’s hair products and brushes in her own basket on her dressing table.

Hot water bottles for DCs are in their pyjama drawer.

Main handbag kept in bedroom wardrobe next to shoe rack.

Hair clips/bands. I have a compartment in dressing table drawer. All others are DD’s and live in the basket with her brush.

Fire lighter. Lives in kindling basket.

we have a trolley from Ikea and the hair stuff including brushes and bobbles live in there. Hot water bottles live in the cupboard under the stairs in a box of their own. I don’t have a handbag but if I did it would probably belong at the front door on the coat rack, or possibly slung over a dining chair, hair clips in the aforementioned hair station, and lighters in the log fire tool thingy. A metal sort of large jug in the fireplace.

on a similar note- where do people store their vitamins? Their mail that needs stuff followed up on? And their school bags (or their kids school bags?)

Lolaslashes · 25/02/2026 20:58

I need to add mine on here for the sage advice of MN!!
*random cards like gift cards, lesser used membership cards
*giant bags of vitamin capsules that don’t fit in cupboard
*boxes of medication taken daily but I only take 2 tablets a day

  • over head headphones for dog walks *bits and bobs of jewellery
Waitingfordoggo · 25/02/2026 21:01

I have a really deep drawer in the bathroom and my hairbrushes live in there.

Hot water bottles live in a cupboard above the fridge freezer in our utility room.

My handbag doesn’t have a place, it just follows me about the house. So it’s on the floor next to the sofa or on the floor next to my bed.

Hair clips and bands are in the big drawer with the brushes. I also have a small jewellery tree on the windowsill in the bathroom and there are always a few hair bands on there.

Vitamins in a pretty ceramic bowl in the kitchen so we all remember to take them.

’To do’ paperwork is photographed onto phone reel (unless original needed). Any dates added to shared calendar etc. If original needed it’s put on a pin board in the kitchen.

School bags under chair in hallway during term time; emptied and in their wardrobe during holidays.

I don’t have some of these things, but suggest:-

  • gift cards in envelope and keep with other important paperwork. I keep a running tally on my phone Notes of balances remaining on various gift cards and book tokens etc;
  • see if you can download digital versions of your membership cards. We never remember our National Trust card so I keep those in the car now. Other cards I have in a pile on the same shelf as keys so easy to grab on the way out
  • can you decant a weeks worth of all medication into smaller tubs and keep those in view eg near the kettle? Then you’ll remember to take them.
  • can you have a basket by the door/on a shelf/ on coat hooks for all dog walking bits?
  • I use a line of plastic hooks stuck inside my wardrobe door for bits and bobs. It’s just a line of round hooks but works really well
User415373 · 25/02/2026 23:17

I keep recent important mail/school letters etc in a plastic wallet that's slotted down the side of the drawer I keep plates in, as that's where I'll most likely be stood when I need it!
I do photograph stuff as well though then add a tag to the photo or add it the family wall app calendar if it's an invitation or something. In that case the paper copy goes straight in the bin.

I have one of these for all things hair x

mumlong · 26/02/2026 10:48

You’re doing amazing just by trying to organize.
Give each item one fixed “home” like a basket, hook, or drawer.
Avoid letting things live on surfaces.
