Best dishwasher tablets?

I am about to lose my mind with my dishwasher. No matter what I do, my dishes are still dirty when they come out. And now so is my cutlery. I pre rinse everything, the filter is clean, rinse aid and salt topped up, tried the fairy power soak stuff too. It’s always properly dried on too, so it’s not just a case of re rinsing - I have to actually wash up stuff that comes out.

Is there a trick I’m missing? Is there some amazing dishwasher tablets on the market I simply must have? Please help before I rip the thing out and buy a new one

That video suggests there are 3 spray arms in a miele machine. Roof, floor and under the upper basket

PluckyChancer · 25/01/2026 19:08

How often do you use a good quality dishwasher cleaning product in the empty dishwasher?
I find if you clean it regularly, it does make a difference.

I use Aldi or Lidl brand tablets and have no problems with dirty dishes.

Is there a trick to clean the spray arms? I use a cocktail stick, bash on the work surface and run them under the tap but I’ve often wondered if there is an easier way.

I was about to say that. Wash you dishwasher monthly, empty, at 60 with a dishwasher cleaning powder.

Once a week at the moment because of the issues I’ve been having - I use a dettol one, do you have a better recommendation?

Miele is a good make , as you point out !

TheLivelyCat · 25/01/2026 19:15

Are you in a hard water area? If so do you use extra salt in dishwasher. Sometimes the all in one tablets aren't enough. Also run a dishwasher cleaner through it regularly. I use eco tablets, and find they work well if I keep on top of cleaning the dishwasher, filter weekly, cleaner monthly, I run mine 2 times a day busy household.
Also how is your water pressure?

ChequeredSquares · 25/01/2026 19:17

We use Fairy Platinum Plus, and switch it on every day, sometimes twice in a day. Dishes always come out clean. I put an intensive load on when it’s very dirty but otherwise no issues.

I agree re the arms - my mum had this issue with her dishwasher and I cleaned the arms and there was so much rubbish in them.

stickydough · 25/01/2026 19:18

I use these ones occasionally and find them good. My old dishwasher used to get quite grubby and I found the arm cleaning helped; there would be seeds and things that would get stuck inside and block the spray so water wasn’t getting through. Sympathies, so annoying when a device that’s meant to make life easier doesn’t!

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 25/01/2026 19:19

The spinning arms - are you cleaning these ?

my dishwasher is a BEKO. It’s the worst dishwasher ever.

Moderate water area apparently, and water pressure is great.

I’d do a machine clean, check the filters and so on. Check you have rinse aid and salt etc.

Im trying to cut out chemicals where possible and am a convert to this: www.frenchsoaps.co.uk/products/concentrated-dishwashing-powder-natural-effective-made-in-brittany-1kg

MamaMumMama · 25/01/2026 19:23

We use Morrisons own brand ones. Make sure your salt and rinse aid are topped up once a week. Regular cleaning cycles with one of those dishwasher cleaners. We found that our one had a cleaning setting the other month - had the machine for years but as the settings are in Spanish we didn’t realise.

chgaus · 25/01/2026 19:29

I read somewhere that you shouldn’t pre rinse, something about the detergent needing to cling to the food residue to clean it - sorry not very scientific.
I use the 90min wash with Fairy plat but haven’t had issues with other tablets except the powder tablets, which don’t work for me.

goingtotown · 25/01/2026 19:38

It's not the tablets, it’ll be your dishwasher not working properly.

tobee · 25/01/2026 19:41

bugalugs45 · 25/01/2026 18:48

How often are you putting your dishwasher on ? I only use mine approx twice a week and never have these issues .
I use fairy platinum plus for ref.
Is your dishwasher old & need replacing ?

I don't think how often you put it on makes any difference. The manufacturer doesn't say you can only use it 14 times a year.

tobee · 25/01/2026 19:44

Assuming you're not loading it incorrectly and things are blocking the arms from turning?

I had a problem with my previous dishwasher a few years ago. Got a plumber out who found a thing causing an issue in the pipes. Think it might have been installed slightly incorrectly. Anyway it worked fine after that.

thecatdidit · 25/01/2026 19:49

We use Aldi own brand and never had problems. I've never washed the water arm jet things 😱, I do check they spin freely before every use (I give them a twirl and then push the bottom basket in to make sure nothing catches)
I regularly take the bottom filter and mesh out to clean.
I don't pre wash or rinse items. Dishwasher is an old Bosch and I use the eco mode usually (3.5hours)
I think it's your machine, rather than the tablets.

Shedmistress · 25/01/2026 19:52

Is it one where the little place where you put the tablet pops open after 15 mins?

MrsPatterson2014 · 25/01/2026 20:12

Another vote for Fairy Platinum Plus. I switched to them last year in despair as glasses were coming out cloudy .Miraculous - 1st cycle with Fairy Plat lovely shiny glasses. Would never use anything else now.

TartanMammy · 25/01/2026 20:25

Sounds like the issue is your dishwasher and not the tablets. I use the cheapo Tesco tablets and everything comes out clean. We've just changed to even cheaper Costco tablets and everything is just as clean!

I don't pre rinse and I run a finish cleaner through it once a month.

TheatreTheatre · 25/01/2026 20:29

blankcanvas3 · 25/01/2026 18:57

Yes! I even tested it today with just 4 or 6 bits in plus 3 forks and things still came out dirty

I think something is wrong with your machine. Not draining and re-filling or rinsing with clean water or something.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 25/01/2026 20:34

We've got the Fairy platinum plus tablets on subscribe and save from Amazon, so we never run out. We've got a Fisher Paykel double drawer system dishwasher - now there's 2 of us at home it's a godsend. We do one load a day, and there's another drawer to load the dirty into. Was worth every single penny.
