Filthy Toilet

I rented out my house for 4 weeks. After being convinced it was a good idea while going away to visit some family overseas.

Anyway the place is just about okay apart the bathroom.
Toilet never been cleaned properly.
To be blunt poo stains everywhere.
I have a downstairs toilet which was out of use. I put some storage in there and locked the door.
So I haven't used the upstairs toilet for couple days.
Couldn't deal with the smell.
Need some advice without having to empty water out. As its just brown and yuk.

I have the usual things like limescale spray. Bleach. Those toilet tablets.
Long rubber gloves.

Oh I feel your pain, our tenants did this to us a few years back! Get some Harpic 10X, and a toilet brush. Put about half a bottle of the Harpic down the toilet (use loads), covering every part of the toilet bowl with it, leave for 30 minutes, then scrub the toilet clean with the brush. Flush. See how it comes up. Repeat as many times as is needed. You really need to give it a good scrub with strong chemicals when they get this bad. It took a couple of hours for me to get mine completely clean but it did work in the end.
The Harpic 10x is the one in the black bottle btw.

Thank you. Harpic 10 X.
Yeh gonna take a while!
Hard water area and constant limescale anyway.
Almost wanted a new toilet last year. Its one of those wall hung with plate flush.
Rimless I thought. But plumbers hate dealing with even fixing those things.

Dirty pigs ……wear a face mask when scrubbing you don’t want ‘bits’ going in your nose and mouth 😷

breakfastdinnerandtea · 23/08/2025 14:22

A whole tub of steradent tablets cost about £1 but I use them to clean my toilet when there are a lot of stains.
For worse stains the Astonish fizz and fresh have worked nicely too.

VikingLady · 23/08/2025 14:47

Bleach then toilet brush until you’ve got it looking/smelling better, which may take a few goes. If you’ve got a lot of built up limescale, the only thing that worked for us was a removal product based on hydrochloric acid that I bought online. Brilliant stuff. The stained limescale can off in chunks and plates! Some of it was a cm thick.

To get the most from your cleaning stuff and stop it being diluted with the water in the bottom of the bowl, you can force it round the u bend by “plunging” vigorously with the brush.

Campingisnexttogodliness · 23/08/2025 14:48

Kettles of boiling water...
And black Harpic

Tiredofwhataboutery · 23/08/2025 14:55

Citric acid. You can buy massive tubs on Amazon or dr Beckmann toilet cleaner sachets. Pour them in it foams up to the top then slowly recedes leaving a clean loo. I’ve been a holiday let cleaner and they have saved me more than once.

Heyhelga · 23/08/2025 15:02

You can always tell a lot about people who never bother to clean the loo I think.

Yep go crazy with the Harpic and leave it as long as possible. Overnight if possible.

anyolddinosaur · 23/08/2025 15:06

Leave Harpic there as long as you can then flush and repeat as necessary.

TheOliveFinch · 23/08/2025 15:10

I use the black harpic as well , when we moved house previously one of the toilets was disgustingly like this,I poured a whole bottle of the harpic in put the lid down and left it overnight , the next morning a couple of flushes and it was spotless

That's true. It could be anyone obviously.
Not just a typical stereotype of say lazy bloke living alone.

What are your main thoughts about them.
Other than said person/ couple dont care a shit...

Omg it would be 10 x worse if they never flushed.

Yeh okay thanks. Even using acid worries me.
I know you shouldn't mix limescale spray with bleach.

mathanxiety · 23/08/2025 15:47

Don't use boiling water. You will crack the porcelain.

You need an acid based cleaner. Try spraying with oven cleaner if the Harpic 10x isn't shifting the mess. Let it sit - you can spread cling film over it to prevent it from drying out.

The advice upthread to cover up is sound - cover your nose, mouth, hair (use a shower cap) and get goggles for your eyes. You need protection from the poo and also the cleaning products. Wear rubber gloves.

hangerup · 23/08/2025 15:56

But how to poo stains get everywhere and stay there?!

hangerup · 23/08/2025 15:57

Even when I have had a stomach bug and loose stools the act of flushing gets rid of the vast majority of the mess

we bought a house with awful limescale in the toilet & Harpic left for days did wonders

Oscarwinningtears · 23/08/2025 16:13

Another vote for black Harpic, that stuff will shift anything!

Bodyshopdewberry · 23/08/2025 16:15

I always heard a large bottle of Coca-Cola down the loo, leave overnight, will do the trick.

I assume most supermarkets have this?
I feel stupid ive only ever bought blue standard Harpic.

You can buy pumice stones for cleaning loos. They work great on removing limescale below the waterline.
