Filthy Toilet

I rented out my house for 4 weeks. After being convinced it was a good idea while going away to visit some family overseas.

Anyway the place is just about okay apart the bathroom.
Toilet never been cleaned properly.
To be blunt poo stains everywhere.
I have a downstairs toilet which was out of use. I put some storage in there and locked the door.
So I haven't used the upstairs toilet for couple days.
Couldn't deal with the smell.
Need some advice without having to empty water out. As its just brown and yuk.

I have the usual things like limescale spray. Bleach. Those toilet tablets.
Long rubber gloves.

Even when I have had a stomach bug and loose stools the act of flushing gets rid of the vast majority of the mess

Maybe you have a great toilet and powerful flush.

You can buy pumice stones for cleaning loos. They work great on removing limescale below the waterline.

Ah ok. I like the idea of using something natural. Esp in bathroom with no window.

I assume most supermarkets have this?
I feel stupid ive only ever bought blue standard Harpic.

Yes, available in supermarkets, called Harpic Power Plus.

I’d buy a new toilet seat too! 🤢

Scoop out the water, fill with white vinegar, add sodium bicarbonate. Leave overnight. Magic.

BertieBotts · 23/08/2025 17:59

It's limescale build up, so any kind of acid will work.

My suggestion is to get some powdered citric acid, put it in and stir a bit to dissolve it. Leave for a few hours, come back and scrub with toilet brush, it will probably stink to high heaven but it should come away.

BertieBotts · 23/08/2025 18:02

TBH the main thing I think about people with stained toilets is that nobody ever told them they need to clean a toilet regularly to prevent that building up. I didn't know that until I was an adult because I don't think I ever saw my mum clean our toilet. It means nothing else. Not everyone has the same experiences and knowledge in life.

AProperFlatWhite · 23/08/2025 18:39

Its the limescale that's the problem, it's traps stains. Bleach is useless for this.

Rubber gloves and bucket out the water from the loo with a small plastic container. It's not pleasant but worth it. Get water to the lowest level possible to expose as much of the stained limscale at the bottom as you can. Cover with a thick layer of whatever limescale remover you are using (I use Cillit Bang 100% limescale remover, or Cif as it's abrasive and clings to the limescale. But Citric acid is good when used as a paste). Leave as long as you can/overnight. Scrub with a pumice stone or other good quality scratchy pad. Flush and repeat if still not fully clean.

Ive found trying to use products through water is rarely successful at removing really caked on limescale. I one moved into a rental that I swear the toilet hadn't been cleaned for years. Came up pure white after several goes using this method.

Definitely try the black
harpic before you try any of the more intensive options suggested!

Groovee · 23/08/2025 20:18

I found white vinegar helped in getting it sorted out.

Littlepidgey · 23/08/2025 20:32

Okay this IS disgusting but it works- our was GROSS. You can buy pumice stones on amazon intended for use down the toilet- on a stick. It’s messy, but it ends up amazing. Put some long gloves on. Get in there scraping it (it doesn’t damage the porcelain) you’ll have to do a few flushes cos the pumice will dissolve and make the water grey so you won’t be able to see anything. Ours was so bad I used almost the whole pumice stone, but it looked almost new once I was done with it. No chemicals, just the pumice stone

FusionChefGeoff · 23/08/2025 20:41

Rubber gloves and a non stick scourer as well as all the chemicals!

ImWearingPantaloons · 23/08/2025 20:44

Brick acid for 5 minutes.

Problem solved

Aquarius1234 · 24/08/2025 13:38

Update!

10 x Harpic worked. :)
I'll be ordering the limescale stone from amazon to have a go at that stuff next week.

Honestly OP you'll get the same results from a couple more good go's with the Harpic (left overnight preferably) as you will with the pumice stones and with a lot less effort! Our house had been empty for months before we moved in and water left sitting in the toilets (hardwater area) so both had inch-thick brown limescale in the bottom. I put a full bottle of Harpic down and left overnight and when I flushed in the morning big chunks of limescale came loose, I did the same again the next night and by the following morning it had shifted the lot and both loo's were sparkly white.

anyolddinosaur · 25/08/2025 14:27

Cheap cola is said to work on limescale - whole bottle and leave.
