How to clean my shower drain cover (with pic)

Jinnypint · 24/07/2025 19:24

Pic included to show the item I'm referring to. It sits over the drain in my shower cubicle and the underneath of the circular part does a decent job of catching hair. But how do I clean it?

I've tried soaking it but that doesn't remove the hair which is stuck and twisted under the circular part. As that part doesn't come off, how on
earth do I clean it of the gunked hair?

I don’t have any answers but watching as mine is exactly the same…quite gross, I blast it with the shower head on a power setting but I still think I’m doing something wrong and it should get like that!

Jc2001 · 24/07/2025 19:29

We have similar. If you sort of twist the metal drain bit while pulling the hair out it seems to work. There's a bit of a knack to it.

Also every so often you can unscrew the little alan blot that hold the metal bit on and clean it more thoroughly.

hairypaws · 24/07/2025 19:31

I have the lovely job of cleaning ours with both son and daughter having long hair. I literally pull as much out as I can and blast the plastic with the jet part of the shower head to clean out the mould etc. it’s a nasty job 🤮

JELr29 · 24/07/2025 19:34

i hate doing this job but have found small nail scissors that fit in well to snip the hair down so it’s not as tangled then use an old toothbrush to give it a scrub. Depending on how bad it is I soak in bleach too

Henrysmumplusone · 24/07/2025 19:34

There is a screw holding it all together - come in from the white end and you can take the whole thing apart - I won’t tell you how long it took me to realise this!!

forgotactually · 24/07/2025 19:35

I have similar
Shove a load of Mr Muscle bathroom gel down there
Wait 30 mins or so
Run hot water
Works a treat!

Middletoleft · 24/07/2025 19:36

I've just had a new shower fitted and the chap has just sealed (well, this afternoon anyway) the metal drain. I'd better go and have a closer look as it hadn't occurred to me 😳

Lemons4171 · 24/07/2025 19:36

Cheap hair remover spray , dry out all the water with an old towel , then spray the hair remover and leave for 20 minutes then wash it all away .

JulesJules · 24/07/2025 19:37

I use an old toothbrush and scrub the plastic liner bit and the drain under it with cif or flash bleach spray, then put some zoflora in the plastic liner bit.

MindatWork · 24/07/2025 19:37

We have a similar one and the ‘cup’ part at the bottom does come out - on our one there’s the silver bit that sits on top, then once you take that off there’s another plastic part that you have to yank up and then the cup is underneath floating in the top of the pipe (that’s where all the hair gets stuck and tangled 🤢 )

Thatwaskindoffun · 24/07/2025 19:43

there’s just a screw you undo underneath the metal bit, just need an Alan key. Makes it much easier

dementedpixie · 24/07/2025 19:53

Mine needs a Phillips screwdriver and you undo the screw that attaches the silver cap to the cylinder and then it pulls apart to clean the hair and gunk out.

dementedpixie · 24/07/2025 19:55

@Jinnypint the silver cap comes off. If you look into the cylinder part there should be a Phillips screw that holds the two parts together. That's how I clean mine anyway. I have my special bathroom screwdriver for dealing with it

CandyflossKid · 24/07/2025 19:57

This is DH's job - he unscrews it and gives it a good clean

goodnessidontknow · 24/07/2025 19:57

I use an old battery toothbrush. Spray with cleaner to soften it then run the brush around it. The twisting of the bristles catches up the hair and you can pull it all out. Gross but very satisfying 😁

whiskers72 · 24/07/2025 20:31

I have same and there is a screw that hols the metal bit to the plastic tube in the top that you can remove and clean all parts.

Andthatrightsoon · 24/07/2025 20:57

I got so grossed out cleaning ours over and over that one day I decided to just leave it out when we shower. Now the hair goes straight down the drain, and I replace the lovely clean fitting in between.

MindatWork · 24/07/2025 21:03

OP I’m that dull I googled out of interest and found a MN thread from a couple of years ago about this exact shower trap 🤣 - details instructions here: www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4816979-does-anyone-know-how-to-remove-this-shower-drain-cover

dumpling123 · 24/07/2025 21:22

I have one of these and give it a good clean with an old toothbrush.

22O725 · 24/07/2025 21:56

I turn it upside down and blast the shower into it which loosens the hair enough to be able to pull it out the sides

DonewhatIcando · 25/07/2025 06:14

@Jinnypint
I have exactly the same one.
Can I ask where you got the screenshot from?
The top of mine looks awful and I've been trying to find a new one, unsuccessfully.
To the ops who said there's a screw, well done 👏, I didn't know that, I soak mine in bleach (hence the ruined top) then pick the hair out

gingercat02 · 25/07/2025 08:14

I have just unscrewed mine. Game changer people, thank you so much!

Amazon sell them

Jinnypint · 25/07/2025 08:45

Appreciate the great responses and have found the screw that was covered in gunk 😳Love the idea from a pp of keeping a special bathroom screwdriver for the task

DonewhatIcando Screen shot from Amazon but think I got mine from Screwfix
