Does anyone know how to remove this shower drain cover?

Does anyone else have a shower tray from B&Q and know how to remove this waste cover please?

I know it comes off because when I pry it up, I can see the trap for the hair underneath but it's just not budging!

Any help would be appreciated 🙏

Oh, I've had this one for 2 years now and only figured out that there's a tiny screw in the middle, underneath. I've been pulling the stuck hair out with pliers so far.

No way?! How are you supposed to reach the screw??

Have you tried twisting it or pushing down and twisting at the same time?

Yep, tried twisting clockwise and anti-clockwise. Nothing happening. Tried the push down thing. Nada.

It just pulls upwards. You need to be quite forceful though.

billysboy · 30/05/2023 18:46

Just pulls up

I'm pulling it but it's not budging in the middle. It's also making a small cracking noise and I'm worried I'm going to break it.

There's definitely no screw?

You cannot separate that silver part from the hairy part because it's held by the little screw underneath in the middle. So pull the silver part up and out of that reservoir, turn it over, and you'll see the screw. I'll try to attach a pic.

Trying pic again

This is what's underneath. The part with the silver lid attached might be gunked up so it's stuck itself in, it should pull up with some wiggling. Then there is a loose cup underneath that creates the water seal. Then as PP said you can unscrew the silver part of the lid to remove hair. I just pull it out with an old toothbrush.

I’ve got this shower plug but removed the white cup as couldn’t see the point of it? What’s it for? It seemed to slow the drainage for our shower

NotMeNoNo · 30/05/2023 19:40

You need the water that sits in the cup to seal the waste and prevent smells coming up from drains. Put it back!😀

Woohoo! Thanks to this thread I have managed to get my similar looking drain open finally. It took some force wiggling to prise it off, more than I would have given had it not been for PP. Only thing is mine doesn’t have a cup in it. Should I be concerned? Shower is newly installed so I’m thinking if there really should be one it would be there surely…

I am trying to take this silver shower piece off to clean the filter. There have been messages on this before but I can find the actual solution from the thread. It says thanks to PP but I can’t find PP’s answer. I’m finding it impossible. It’s the first time new shower ready for a clean out. Don’t want to break it feels like I will if I continue. Cannot find any screw nor anywhere to lever. Tried turning both ways. Tried lifting quite forcefully but to no avail. Desperate as it’s disgusting. Thank you for your help.

I just typed a long message, but it disappeared!!

Anyway... the screw is underneath the middle of that silver disc. You need to pull it up and out of the hole. Yes, its a tight fit, but it will come out. Try to lever it using something that won't damage it or the shower tray. I used a plastic trim tool from a set I have for the car.

Next time, just squirt a load of cheap hair-removal cream into the drain, leave it for a while and then flush with hot water. It will dissolve all the hair.

The trick is to keep it level as you pull it up. As pp said, use something blunt and plastic (I used a spatula) to lift two sides up at the same time.

It will bend and look like it's about to break at any moment but there are no screws or anything keeping it down. It just takes some force.

Thank you very much.....I actually managed to get my very cold squashed fingers under it...I'd tried with an implement and was frightened I'd break it.....eventually i managed to pull it free....wow....couldn't believe how tough it was....hopefully not so bad next time....think I'll do it more often now...its such a disgusting area....can't believe its just from a shower....and its only me....thank you so much...very useful post...

thenightsky · 12/02/2024 14:44

Honestly, its the worse design for a shower drain I've ever come across.

Angrymum22 · 12/02/2024 14:48

Whatever you do don’t unscrew. I did this with one shower trap and it unscrewed the waste pipe and resulted in a “beautiful” waterfall in the room below.
