What keeps the whiff away in the loo?

Please recommend a product that works. I have resorted to using hair spray or perfume.
Is there a diffuser that actually works?

We had a timer sprayer ( or was it motion sensitive?) but we could only put it up really high , so I couldn't reach it to change it. In the smaller loo, it just sprayed you when you walked in , if you were unlucky.

I have always found striking a match the best way. Sprays just make it linger and smell even worse.

FurForksSake · 16/07/2025 21:48

Clean the loo with a brush after poos and double flush. Open the window.

We have a hassett green London Reed diffuser in dewberry that works I think to minimise any left over smells.

MsSmartShoes · 16/07/2025 21:49

An open window at all times certainly helps.
Neom Reed Diffusers work very well in small spaces.

Somehowgirl · 16/07/2025 21:49

I despise any artificial scents. We just open a window.

MissyB1 · 16/07/2025 21:51

Febreeze toilet air freshener. We use this, works a treat. Will post a pic.

Keeping it properly clean and keeping a window open.

WingSlutz · 16/07/2025 21:52

Bleach down the loo.
light a match after a poo.
open the window (if there is one) otherwise keep extractor fan going for 10-15 minutes.
aldi reed diffusers (Jo Malone dupes) are good.

Live on your own.

Clean the loo (I use Ecover loo cleaner) after a poo and put the lid down. Keep the window open all the time. Keep the room scrupulously clean and empty any bins often. Eat a healthy diet so smells are minimised. The only thing worse than the smell of shit is the smell of shit and air freshener of any kind. Just awful.

TheProvincialLady · 16/07/2025 21:54

I do agree that lighting a match or a tea light is also effective. Not a Yankee Candle or other abomination.

Menopants · 16/07/2025 21:57

Remove all men from the household

Definitely second the advice of putting the lid down; smell disappears more than twice as fast.

Send tour family to the local supermarket toilet if they need a poo.

Prettygreeneyes43 · 16/07/2025 22:02

Flush straight away and open a window wide.

ButtSurgery · 16/07/2025 22:04

Open the window and shut the door.

If it's a bathroom with no window (I used to have one like that), light a tea light, stick it in the bottom of the bath or shower for safety and shut the door.

Overtheatlantic · 16/07/2025 22:06

The word Shitrus comes to mind. It’s that awful combination of poo and spray that creates its own awful smell.

SueSuddio · 16/07/2025 22:18

Neat zoflora down the pan.

Or the spray zoflora is really good too.

Steelworks · 16/07/2025 22:21

Think about what you’re eating. Garbage in, garbage out, so to speak.

Window open obviously and bleach down the loo after a number 2 - always.

Wreckinball · 16/07/2025 22:26

Before you poo, put a small dollop of body wash/shampoo/hand wash anything into the loos so it slides into the water. It puts a thin film on the surface of the water and “encapsulates” your poo as it lands. Your poop is less smelly as it’s wrapped in a little bit of whatever it was. Doesn’t get rid completely but does help - flush asap too

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 16/07/2025 22:29

To help minimise lingering wee odours especially if males in the household, spray around the base of your toilet with shaving foam. Leave for 10 mins and wipe away . Do not sniff the cloth after you wipe away. That is a once off mistake.

Bleach

OK we do the window open, lids down, door closed. Cannot do anything around matches with dc being around and very curious but I'll try a few of the tips.
The Aldi dupes reed diffisers are probably the worst I have ever used though.
