Unpleasant household chores

talilac · 20/05/2008 23:10

I've cleaned out the washing machine drawer any number of times.

Today however in search of an odd smell I actually looked into the space the drawer goes in. URGH! Full of gunk and mould. No wonder there was a smell.

Now however my washing machine smells divine and I am feeling rather pleased with myself.

So in honour of a nasty job done, what are your top yucky chores?

omg the washing machine drawer?

have never cleaned it

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 20/05/2008 23:58

de-hairing the bath plug hole is the WORST job ever. And its usually all my hair, and i STILL loathe it.

don't much enjoy cleaning out the toaster either. Especially when i shake it over the bin but forget to check the lid of bin has stayed open properly as i do my cocktail impression. cue crumbs all over floor and toddler delightedly trailing them all over house. I know i'll be finding bits of black toast for months.... sigh....

LyraSilvertongue · 21/05/2008 00:10

I've done the washing machine drawer recently. It was putting black spots all over DP's white shirts. i never realised so much black gunk accumulates in there.
Worst household chore has to be ironing though.

Under the Sofa/suite actually scratch that all bloody housework. Bloody repetitive shite. Bloody erm....... yeah that's about it.

whomovedmychocolate · 21/05/2008 00:59

Ooh behind the car seat is a particularly onerous task.

Or under the kitchen cupboard skirts - has to be done once a year to check for mice - we live in an old house.

Bleaching the bath toys comes close though - what is that stuff inside them - it's like all the grease and crap that comes off the kids collects inside one rubber duck

ninedragons · 21/05/2008 05:58

All of them.

I particularly loathe ironing, though. If DH is running late and needs me to iron him a shirt there basically has to be a promise of flowers, wine or jewellery in it for me . I find doing laundry (up to the point of ironing) oddly satisfying. No doubt this would change if we switched to cloth nappies.

kingprawntikka · 21/05/2008 08:30

I have started shaking the toaster out in the garden. Much less mess.

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 09:09

hairy plug holes definitely, especially when they're a bit slimey
How did you clean out the space for washing machine drawer? i've tried to do this but it's welded on and goes back for miles!

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 09:12

the seal round the washing machine door is generally full of yuck too - that grey matter made of a mix of soap scum, limescale and fluff

cleaning the dishwasher filter is worse though (and those of you who are saying 'oh I didn't know you had to clean the dishwsher filter' you have a treat in store...)

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 09:15

i think i've done that - ours lifts out and is usually full of sweetcorn, urgh
or do i have to delve deeper?

Uriel · 21/05/2008 09:16

MrsBadger, oddly I like cleaning the dishwasher filter. Makes me pleased all the dishes are going to be clean.

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 09:18

that's the one, Bear

I hate to think how long I left it before I first did ours...

the worst cuplrits are paper labels from jam jars etc

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 09:18

i feel the same about cleanin the washing machine drawer

francagoestohollywood · 21/05/2008 09:20

de- hairing the bath plug hole is disgusting.

But at the moment I'm hating any kind of chore. I even loath ironing, which used to relax me...

mrspnut · 21/05/2008 09:45

I hate cleaning the skirting boards and door frames, just when you think you've finished you shut a door and spot all the dirty fingermarks at knee level.

My washing machine has the detergent dispenser on the inside of the door so it's self cleaning. and my OH does the dishwasher filter every time he unloads it.

cleaning the car crumbs & mess

themoon66 · 21/05/2008 09:54

Bath and shower plugs holes are the worst. Hair and grey slime. And why does it smell of sick?

laura032004 · 21/05/2008 10:00

I have a hair catcher in my shower plug hole, so it's quite easy to clean. I just empty before I have a shower, so it's all dry, and just lifts out with loo roll.

Alternatively, put some Immac on your plug hole before you go to bed, and all the hair will dissolve

I don't really delve too deeply into my washing machine. I do stick the entire drawer into the dishwasher occasionally, and then just scrub the drawer compartment out with a washing up brush and some bleachy water though.

talilac · 21/05/2008 10:01

I'm making a urrrgh face just reading these.. Particularly the ones I haven't done lately like the bath plug and dishwasher filter.. Oh and the car seat, ours currently is harbouring a deadly mix of sand, crumbs and raisins..

Re cleaning the space where the drawer goes - oh it was bad. But it had to be done cos we were also getting the mould marks on laundry. Basically, rubber gloves and an old toothbrush got the worst of it out, then a bit of sponge with cif to get the dried on stuff and the last of the mould. Then an empty 90degree wash with a bit of washing machine cleaner to flush it all out. Horribly non eco but it worked.

I agree re ironing. I refuse. I reckon you can avoid it by folding or hanging as soon as the dryer has stopped, and getting DH to do his own shirts! Though in fact he generally waits til his mum comes to stay and then presents her with them..

car seat - take cover off, turn inside out and shake (all outside). Then was on a very cool wash.
I don't hate ironing - you can't hate something you do annually (literally)
Actually I might do it tonight. Glass of wine, DVD...

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 11:04

I have a 1yo and have ironed one shirt since before he was born (or is that before I was pg?)
Might possibly be 2 but I don't think so. I moved into this house last November and haven't ironed in this house yet!

TsarChasm · 21/05/2008 11:10

The one I absolutely cannot bear is sometimes in the summer we get a maggoty bin outside. (This is despite wrapping everthing in lots of bags etc.) Sorting out that delight totally turns my stomach.

Pablop · 21/05/2008 11:11

I hate cleaning the oven, in fact if I was rich I would throw it away and buy a new one.
