Laundry

I have been criticised here on mums net for re-wearing clothes between washes. What is the view on airing. All the kids have formal (expensive) school socks - which we air - does anyone else find airing an effective alternative to washing?

I'd view socks to be the same as underwear - one wear then wash .Though I wash my bras sfter one wear I know loads of people wear fora few days

MyLemonWriter · 07/04/2025 12:02

We used to be wash after one wear, but dont any longer. We dont have hard and fast rules but generally wear for far longer than once

Real woollen socks don't need washing every wear. It usually tells you on the wrapping that they should be worn several days before being landed. Maybe a squirt of antibacterial spray if sweaty.

They dont really smell and we air them and they are pretty fresh

Woollen socks don't need washing everyday. Can you alternate days? Synthetic or sports socks should be washed more regularly.

You wash your bras after one day? That’s excessive!

Grimbeorn · 07/04/2025 13:32

Wool.is fine with airing. If you can get the sun on them even better, but even if not I'd wear several times before washing.
Re normal cotton mix socks I might wear two days if I'm just in the house/car/desk, or I might wear two pairs in one day if I go for a long run. A bit of flexibility is needed, between different activities and also different people (some people do not have sweaty feet)! Just sniff it, and if it's good, wear again.

MyLemonWriter · 07/04/2025 13:44

DH is probably the most sweaty in our house and even he manages with re-wearing - obviously if it smells or is dirty it gets washed, the wool socks are fine with airing

DD also finds that chunky boot socks can be re- worn several times

I know, it hardly takes any time at all does it! I do 3-4 loads a week for a family of 4. When I read on here how much washing some people do my mind boggles.

there are 6 of us and we used to wash after every wear. DH pointed out that most of the laundry was actually clean, so now we re-wear - not quite as much as when he was young, however!!

The only socks I re wear are my wool walking socks. They actually don't smell after a walk of 6-10 miles.
Any other socks go in the wash after a day's wear.

Dh has a pair of kilt socks and I don't think they have ever been washed - he hangs them out after each wear.

we air the woollen ones, the girls dance in their sports socks (usually white) so I pop them in the laundry every weekend

Wearing socks for more than one day is bad for your feet. We learned that in school, but now I’m old and my brain fog is real, I can’t remember why.

We barely wear anything twice, but especially never socks and underwear.

MyLemonWriter · 08/04/2025 15:05

Its the Easter holidays so everything is getting washed

Depends how well and how often you wash your feet too.

Blew my mind when I discovered some people think that having soapy water run down your body and over your feet is ‘washing’ your feet. It isn’t.
