Laundry

I have been criticised here on mums net for re-wearing clothes between washes. What is the view on airing. All the kids have formal (expensive) school socks - which we air - does anyone else find airing an effective alternative to washing?

Ooh no never re-wear socks or underwear, and I do re-wear clothes that aren’t dirty

MyLemonWriter · 08/04/2025 15:47

we find airing woollen socks works well

I’ve never heard of airing stuff in my life every clothing item in this house gets washed taken off in the bathroom to shower daily and is washed and dried before the day ends

I used to know someone like that. Take clothes off at night, wash (in an empty machine) then dry.

Does one day’s worth fill your machine?

What do you wear when you’re waiting for the machine?

And, why?

washing and drying daily may have helped - we had so much laundry and most of it could be worn again without issue. we now spot clean air, re-wear - if dirty it gets washed

You wash your bras after one day? That’s excessive!

Not really, I,m a sweaty menopausal and I work, in a warm environment. I have about 15 bras and wash them all in those padded net bags in a delicate wash.
Life is too short to hand-wash bras IMO . Take the time to check the wires are not poking through though.

After every use: socks(cotton), undies, t shirts(I sweat a lot), leggings/tights, shirts.
Every other wear: bras, trousers, pyjamas, cardigans/jumpers if needed
Jeans after 2 to 3 wears depending. Bedding and towels once a week, or before if needed.

We dont have a hard and fast regime, so sometimes things get worn a lot more sometimes less depending on when they get dirty

After just one day?

Ÿes after just one day. Feet sweat and smell. Underwear and socks need washing after one wear. You've asked this question before and been told repeatedly 🙈

that wasn't the sole driving reason, but yes. We had simply realised that many things in the wash weren't actually dirty

I rewear bras, jumpers and cardigans (which are worn over a t shirt) but other things go in the wash. I would rewear skirts if I wore them

I think rewearing underpants is going too far.

If socks are made from genuine wool I would air them and wear again.
Wear them only if they look and smell clean.

Synthetic socks always smell terrible after just one day.

MyLemonWriter · 10/04/2025 13:52

its not a hard and fast rule and some of us wear things for longer than others. If its dirty it gets washed.

Anything that's against the skin should be washed after wearing, if it's a second layer, such as a sweater over a t-shirt, then you can get away with more.
