Are you looking to finally getting into a new routine with housework? Something simple to start that can be easy to add to over time? Flylady may be the answer for you!

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in.

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!

Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you:

Well done Hip for being ahead of the baby steps and the zone work!

Nellie great ta da list! Just getting the ironing pile done is a great job in itself!

LaMarschallin happy anniversary! Well done on canceling unwanted subscriptions before they start charging.

70 that definitely counts as a win!

Conquerer too bad it's not something you can do a little at a time. It'll be messy and crazy for a bit, but worth it! I hope DD is feeling better soon.

Broccoli it happens so much on mn, people posting on the wrong thread or wanting to start their own, but adds to an existing, unrelated thread. It could be much worse, I'm sure!
The bubbles in the wallpaper would be so frustrating! I've never attempted wallpaper, I always paint. Are you doing an accent wall or the whole room?

The only ta das I have today aren't even at my house! On my lunch I vacuumed my ILs house. Since they're away I'd like for them to come home to a nice clean house! Well, cleaner than it was anyway.

Thursday is errand day.

Thursday's mission is to set your timer and clear out your fridge. Throw out anything dodgy looking, growing a fur coat, or if you come across something that you're not sure what it started out as! Don't forget the fruit & vegetable drawers.

Stuck to my routines yesterday (dishes each evening and getting ready for tomorrow and scrubbed another door) so tada!!!!

I started mini, stressfree decluttering on the 1st. For me that means one thing a day, can be anything (except obvious rubbish), I just pick up one thing from anywhere and either put it in the bin, re gift or put in the donation bag, depending what it is. Yesterday's was a used candle, I wanted to melt out the rest and keep the pretty glass, never going to happen, was looking at me accusingly from the kitchen counter, so binned it!

Today's plan is to stick to routines and it's hair wash day again, which steals an hour of my life each time (by the time I blow dry etc so it lasts till next time). Will rummage in the fridge, think there are some Christmas cheeses past their date.

Thank you All for the warm welcome, writing things down and making a little plan early in the morning is really helping me and I don't feel overwhelmed. Also don't feel embarrassed if I only manage little bits here and there x x x x

Allatseas · 09/01/2025 08:51

I need this thread so much. Planning to put the house in the market in March and have so much to do!

DreamingDaisies · 09/01/2025 12:30

I thought I was on top of my fridge but have just found that the unopened cream cheese packet I've had in there a while is BBE 2023. Oh well, gone now.

Shopping done and put away, freecycle item collected, Vinted purchases collected.

Am at that awkward stage of the post Christmas declutter where I have large piles to go and currently nowhere to send them!

Yogachick · 09/01/2025 12:55

I love this thread ,even tho I’ve not posted. It helps me so much. Cleaned the fridge today before tomorrow’s food shop. Even roped husband & adult son to help,SO much quicker & easier & makes them appreciate the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff that has to be done. Instead of being overwhelmed & panicking,I make a list. Those ticks make me so happy & if it doesn’t get ticked it just gets added to next day.Thankyou all x

LaMarschallin · 09/01/2025 14:57

Attempted errands but the main one was thwarted by the fact that Lakeland don't seem to stock perforated clingfilm anymore. Huh!
Still, had a pleasant look around the garden centre where L'land is situated and got a birthday card for son-in-law, a couple of toys for the stock we keep in for DGC visits and some bits from the delicatessen, so all good.
I've cleaned out the fridge and put tonight's chilli on to simmer and DH has taken over the kitchen to try his hand at making bars brith (a Welsh, fruited tea bread for anyone who's not come across it).
So I'm catching up on messages to friends (including MN ones here Smile) and I suspect we'll do the Times crossword once the dough is raising.
Facial tonight, since I'm continuing my Hazel-inspired self care.* *
ED glad we're not the only ones who find Dunoon mugs a bit addictive. They're so good for presents too since there seems a subject for everyone in the themed mugs.

Conquererofallchallenges · 09/01/2025 16:51

Thanks @HazelNotHungryLC dd is a lot better now.
Tadas

  • 3x lol (where does it come from? 🤔)
  • 1x dried
  • Over 100 items decluttered today 👍 all to either cs or fabric recycling.

Tonight:

  • ironing (just a few bits left to do)
  • sorting through some old photos
  • found a face mask to use up.
  • rummage in freezer to see what needs using.

Still eating from freezer/cupboards/fridge. Hopefully enough for another week to use it all up and start fresh again!

Floundering and procrastinating here.

Nellieinthebarn · 09/01/2025 22:56

Ta Das!
Made a lovely soup with all the veg that needed using up, which also cleared out the fridge in preparation for shopping delivery tomorrow.
Ironed and put away the sheets, I know ironing bedding is above and beyond, but I like to make sure they are really dry before putting away, especially in winter.
Hoovered all through the ground floor.
LOL x 1
cleaned the en suite round, just a quick spray and wipe.
No errands needed today.

HazelNotHungryLC · 10/01/2025 04:25

Welcome @Allatseas & @Yogachick 👋

A house move is a great time to get started (well, anytime really) but flylady at least gives you a focus area with the zones. Then, in your new home, you can start to establish routines.

I like tick lists when I have a lot to get done, it really is so rewarding to see everything done at the end.

Hip decluttering one thing a day is a great plan. There's a decluttering thread on mn that I used to contribute to that was to declutter one thing a day. It really is a good idea!
Washing your hair and taking the time to dry it is self care. Think of it as a pampering session, instead of wasting time on yourself. It really isn't a waste 💐

Dreaming it's frustrating when you have things to go but nowhere to take them.

LaMarschallin well done keeping up the self care! I actually would love to treat myself to a professional facial. One of the lovely ladies at work actually does that for a second job.

Conquerer I'm a firm believe that laundry multiplies as we sleep! I'm glad DD is feeling better now.

Sing that's a lot of out and about, I'm not surprised you're tired! Hopefully you can find your meds in stock soon.

Scourgify I have days like that too. Although once I start with one thing, it usually gets me my motivation back, but if not, I can say I did that one thing at least 😂

Nellie well done for clearing the fridge out and making a healthy soup at the same time.

I worked again today, but managed to vacuum ILs family room and clean the bathroom, including the mirrors. I did that on my lunch break. Then after work I did a quick mop so it'll be clean for when they return home tomorrow.

I did nothing at my own house!

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 10/01/2025 04:32

Friday is clean out your car and purse day.

Friday's mission is to sweep and mop your kitchen floor, it's the last day in the kitchen. There is no right or wrong way to do this as far as flylady is concerned. Anything is better than nothing at all.

Baby Step 10: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-10/
Utilise your timer. Set it for 15 minutes, then go around your house with a rubbish bag and gather any rubbish that's laying around your house. Of course, still work on your morning and before bed routines.

Friday is clean your car and purse day

My car would think I'm planning to sell him if I did an impromptu clean Grin
Purse/handbag are fine as I tidied quite recently .

On a more TaDa note though:

Recycled some toiletries
Recycled some electricals
Two bags to go to the Charity Shop
Sorted out the toiletries upstairs and the hand towels .
Vacuumed the hall/stairs/bedroom. ( FemaleCat was in DD bedroom so that can wait)
Sprayed the bathroom ( I;m not going to say I cleaned it but at least it smells nice )
I have a vegetarian chilli in the Slow Cooker

Conquererofallchallenges · 10/01/2025 16:29

Not much progress (if any) today:
Tadas:

  • food shopping for fruit, veg and sausages
  • 2 x lol And that's about it.....
ExpensiveDecoration · 10/01/2025 16:31

@LaMarschallin I was in a Lakeland in a garden centre yesterday too, although I only really stopped to use the garden centre loos after a long journey, can never resist a quick look round the Lakeland bit though.

I’ve had a rare total day off from work, appointments, anything today, so I dropped DD at the station and stopped in Waitrose on the way home to pick up a few bits, had a cuppa in the cafe and made a list. I have had a huge mountain of paperwork growing on the dining table for months and in amongst it is all the stuff I need for my tax return, so it was starting to get urgent, also in danger of cascading onto the floor.

Tada!
✅Waitrose shopping and put away
✅Robovac downstairs
✅feed and water birds
✅took down Lego Christmas village and packed away in bubble wrap, must make VERY sure not to drop it while putting it in the loft this year
✅washing done and onto heated airer
✅sorted out mammoth pile of paperwork, took ages but now at least I have three piles, tax, other to do, filing and a load went into recycling
✅took apart my Christmas pressie jigsaw and boxed it up
✅made beef casserole and put in slow oven
✅took photos of unwanted Christmas decorations to list on FB

Still to do
☑️clear out salad drawer of fridge
☑️chuck out remnants of Xmas pudding retrieved from fridge earlier and wash bowl

Yogachick · 10/01/2025 17:56

✅LOL today,onto heated airer
✅food shop at the big supermarket, I get quite overwhelmed doing this so big win
✅dog walk
✅yoga,particularly yummy practice today
✅actually put make up on for food shop excursion
trying to see I achieved stuff today even though I don’t feel I did much!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2025 18:21

LOL done ( dark colours including DS gym gear)
Supermarket delivery ( I am getting over my FOMO for Real Life Supermarkets as they seem to be Self Checkout and very few tills . I am not a fan)
Dropped off /picked up DD to/from work

After dinner I might do a second LOL .

Nellieinthebarn · 10/01/2025 18:28

I have a health condition that flares up, and today was the day! Took until half 11 to get up, washed and dressed, so not much flying done. Doesn't matter, the place isn't looking too bad, and we managed to get the basics done between us. Hopefully feel better tomorrow.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2025 21:24

Tomorrow I will push DH up into the attic to put the Christmas decorations away , they're all bagged up , just waiting.

RockingBroccoli · 10/01/2025 21:37

So we solved the smelly towel issue. Ecoeggs do nothing. We had a friend share an article with us about how much bacteria remains on laundry after using ecoeggs 🤢 So now we're rewashing basically everything we own in powder. Finished the wallpapering today in between laundry loads!

LaMarschallin · 10/01/2025 22:13

Really enjoy hearing what everyone's up to - inspires me to carry on Smile
Main ta-da of the day was the weekly church cleaning. Friday seems best as the flower ladies have been on Thursday so I can vacuum up any debris. The whole thing takes a couple of hours so I'll be glad when the end of the month comes round.
I sweep and wash the kitchen floor during the downstairs house bleurgh, so didn't feel guilty missing that.
DD and GC popping in over the weekend. It's so lovely to just say "Yes, come over!" without having to immediately plan to clean the house beforehand as it's already done!
