New Year, Fresh Start for your home - January Flylady thread

Are you looking to finally getting into a new routine with housework? Something simple to start that can be easy to add to over time? Flylady may be the answer for you!

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in.

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!

Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you:

Evening all, I have failed spectacularly with keeping up with the thread, but am chugging along in the background with the Flying and more or less on top of things.

Mr Decoration doesn’t know Flylady exists, even though he knows I’ve been on a thread about housework on MN for donkeys years, I just do the Flylady things and he does his things. Mostly his things are the very frequent ones, keeping the kitchen clear, emptying bins, running the vac round, rotating the DW and doing some laundry. I do the more detailed stuff and the bulk of the life admin.

HazelNotHungryLC · 30/01/2025 00:07

LaMarschallin well done on getting your house back in order!

Broccoli I cannot believe baby Broccoli is 2 months old already!
To answer your question: my DH doesn't know about Flylady. He does jump in when things are needing done, but I honestly could quite possibly count on one hand how many times he's cleaned the bathroom in the 22 years we have been married 😱
He does do other things though so I don't complain! He keeps the vehicles running, fixes and builds things around the house, helps pull weeds etc. He does take the rubbish out if it's full, helps to rotate the DW, clean up after dinner, cook (on the pellet grill outside, year round). He will grab the vacuum as well.

ED keeping up with things in the house is far more important than keeping up with the thread!

Speaking of the thread, we are nearing the end of January. Is there anybody who would like to take over running the thread for February?

I really don't feel up to it again just yet @HazelNotHungryLC , DH is away regularly at the moment, I have got some health issues under investigation all of a sudden and my parents are starting to need more support too. I will do it again later in the year.

If anyone else would like to have a go at leading the thread, please consider it. @HazelNotHungryLC has probably done more threads than everyone else put together in the last couple of years and I have done a fair few too, it is a bit of effort but really rewarding, no one minds if you miss a day, post the wrong link or whatever. It does also provide added motivation in one's own home! When newer Fledglings have taken the reigns in recent years we have had some great threads, a fresh approach does revitalise things.

HazelNotHungryLC · 30/01/2025 14:49

ED completely understandable as you have a lot on your plate right now! Plus you ran the last couple of threads, and those months are tough.

It really is motivating to run the threads. I was on the threads for a year or 2 before I tried running a thread, it was easier than I expected (adding the links). It really is nice to have a new take on it and you can discover different parts of the website you didn't even know existed!

If needed I can run the next thread too, although I'm feeling no motivation lately, probably due to how cold it is here. It's relentless, and with no snow, it's worrying for the summer!

Speaking of links.. I forgot to add them last night! 🤦‍♀️

Thursday is errand day.

Thursday's mission is to go sofa diving! Clear out the couch of crumbs, socks and Legos. You know, everything that ends up under the cushions or down the sides.

Friday is clean out your car & purse day. It's also date night.

Friday's mission is to place something pretty on the living room, just for you. Whether it's a picture frame with loved ones, flowers in a vase, or something else decorative. Change it up a bit, kind of like stamping the living room done for another month, until we're in zone 5 again.

This is the one baby step we actually cannot recommend doing. It's to sign up to her daily emails! I've heard it's not just one or two, so I wouldn't even attempt it!
I do recommend downloading the app though and she adds daily musings to that, so if anything, read that! (Or at least be ready to un-subscribe)

I'll volunteer for February. All my work deadlines are today so I should be able to set up the new thread this evening. Nice short month for it!

Am behind on everything just now but next month will be better.

Yogachick · 31/01/2025 08:30

Am having some medical procedures so I’ll be doing just what I can, lots of resting in between. Yesterday
✅mediation,yoga
✅made bed
yup, that’s it but fortunately I’m on top of most of it,thanks to Flylady ,so can bear a few days like this for now

SingToTheSky · 31/01/2025 08:52

This month has both dragged and sped by! Getting back on ADHD meds has started to help a little, but it’s early days. Started to get some freelance work coming in too so that’s exciting but definitely a rude awakening as to how much I’m trying to balance in life.

Going to attempt some housework until it’s time to shower and leave for swimming, then I’m dropping Cagletini off with her dad before meeting a friend for a much needed catch up.

Hope everyone has a healthy, happy last day of January 🥰

ExpensiveDecoration · 31/01/2025 09:07

Thank you @DreamingDaisies much appreciated.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/01/2025 14:18

It took me ages to suss that "rotating the DW" wasn't dishwasher !
If I stack our DW , my DH will come along and move things "for better use of space"

But DW rotating - drying washing ?

DreamingDaisies · 31/01/2025 16:04

DW rotating = taking the clean stuff out and putting the accumulated dirty stuff back in.

We have a scan picture on our mantelpiece, maybe I will swap that out tonight for something else as the baby in question is now 3.

HazelNotHungryLC · 31/01/2025 18:06

Thank you so much for volunteering for Feb Dreaming!

70 just as Dreaming said, rotating DW is taking out the clean dishes and putting in the dirty dishes. So you were right all along! I'm sorry I wasn't clear with that in my OP.

Sing yay for your meds! You've come a long way with how you're able to juggle life, just in the last couple of years. You've got this!

Yogachick take it easy and rest up from your procedures. All fed, no one dead is a real achievement sometimes, and that's okay!

Nothing more to add really, between work and going to basketball games at the school for the band, there's not much time for flying!

Very sunny yesterday, which made it a lot easier to see the last few pieces of glass on the path. I think we’ll remove the remaining panes in the greenhouse to use for a cloche, and replace the greenhouse windows with corrugated plastic.

Inside, the surplus-to-requirements coffee table is away to a DC’s flat. Large wall mirror hung, and hot water supply restored, hopefully permanently. Got my eye on removing another small table that I could manage without.
