Nespresso coffee machine help

We had a very old Nespresso that has just sadly given up. I managed to get a great deal on pods in the Black Friday sale. 😳

Can anyone recommend a machine which uses the old-style pods?

What do you mean old style? I thought these were very common. My machine had packed up and I’m looking for a new one too.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/08/2024 20:53

Have you checked FB marketplace?

Gatekeeper · 28/08/2024 20:56

Nespresso Citiz takes these capsules and also De' longhi Lattissima. Ive just bought the latter and can recommend

GoldenSunflowers · 28/08/2024 20:58

This one is £123.99

Pixie. I've just sold one on marketplace.

Emmagr1981 · 28/08/2024 21:01

We had this problem and we bought the Lor Philips machine which is £59.99 with 100 capsules. It's a quality machine at a fraction of the price.

I went to a John Lewis today. I saw the Pixie (£145, v compact, nice design) and a few much more expensive ones.

The person there was very encouraging regarding the Vertua (?) ones, significantly cheaper due to promotions in other shops, at £67-80. BUT they take different pods. Enormous ones, they were on display. He said they’d been around for 12 years. I said I’ve never seen them. Anyway, after a bit of discussion on this I said I’d go downstairs in Waitrose and look for those pods. That’s when he admitted they’re not available in shops, only online from a few places. That put me off, although the machines themselves were a good price and cute in their different colours. I’m back to square 1!

Toomuchleopard · 29/08/2024 18:20

@GoldenSunflowers I have the vertua machine. You can only get the pods from Nespresso shops or online. I have a recurring monthly order from the website. However the last few times we have been away the hotels have had the machines that take the small pods and I much prefer them. I’m thinking of getting another machine for the old style pods

Is this the L’Or?

I replaced my old De Longhi one with a Sage Creatista plus and love it as I mainly drink lattes. There are loads of compatible Nespresso pods which gives more choice than the Vertuo, including Starbucks. I bought mine on a Black Friday offer from Amazon and saved quite a bit which was great as it's a pricey machine.

GoldenSunflowers · 29/08/2024 18:25

@Toomuchleopard I’m the only one who drinks coffee in this house, just one in the morning, if I’m not in a rush, then a couple at the weekend. I don’t want to spend too much, or make this another job I have to remember, to order in time. I hadn’t thought about the taste :)

Mt61 · 29/08/2024 18:25

Think possibly changed the style due to people using compatible pods- might be wrong. I’ve never seen those newer pods in
any of the supermarkets

GoldenSunflowers · 29/08/2024 18:28

Makes sense, I suppose, when you can buy Tesco’s own pods vs the original. Maybe that’s why mine stopped working, I used an inferior product in it 😂

BiddyPop · 29/08/2024 18:30

There are plenty still for original pods rather than the new virtuo.

I just bought an essenza mini (I think - it's all safely packed for transit) today for dd's uni room. And there was a range of different ones like the Pixie and 4/5 others for original pods, up to a version with an attached milk frothed.

thursday22august · 29/08/2024 18:30

I've got the L'Or machine and it's great.

BiddyPop · 29/08/2024 18:32

The coffee from the original pods is superior to the virtuo pods. Even James Hoffman thinks that (coffee snob reviewer on YouTube)

adagio · 29/08/2024 18:33

Nespresso still sell ‘original pod’ machines as well as vertua, they currently have £100 off the citiz plus milk. This is the one I have - first got this model in 2008 then when the leaking got too bad replaced it last year for £1 direct from nespresso with a subscription for coffee.

I prefer the original pods.

doneandone · 29/08/2024 18:33

I wouldn't get the Vertuo as you can't buy pods in the shops, only online, so therefore more expensive. You can pick the vertuos up ten a penny in the charity shops as I guess no one wants them.

AKAanothername · 29/08/2024 18:38

I'm not sure where I saw it but, apparently, nespresso have the rights to the specific coffee pods for about five years. At present, loads of different suppliers have the small nespresso compatible pods that you can buy in any supermarket. The Vertuo (bigger) pods can't be copied yet, once the five (?) years are up there will be loads of alternatives available.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 29/08/2024 18:40

I never liked the vertuo, never hot enough for me. We have the citiz.

GoldenSunflowers · 29/08/2024 18:57

@AKAanothername so the bigger pods are new? When the guy was showing them to me in JL I said I’d never seen them before and he was like “oh, certainly, they’ve been around for 12 years”, it really made me doubt myself.

Rory17384949 · 29/08/2024 19:34

We have a pixie which I'm pleased with.
Stayed in a holiday let with a citiz with a milk frother which was brill- the coffee was hotter than with our pixie and the milk frother was a bonus. Takes up more worktop space than the pixie though which is an issue for us as our kitchen is small.

Well they are new compared to original… but not that new! They were just coming in when I bought my first machine in a JL sale as a Christmas present (from DH to me, chosen by me 😁).

EatingSleeping · 29/08/2024 19:53

We have the Lor with the picture up thread and it's great. I think Nespresso push the larger pod machines as it guarantees sales of their own pads
