Do you pay additionaly for laundry?

Hello, just a quick, do you make your maids responsible for laundry? Do you pay additionaly for that? My maid (actually it is a male maid) is doing all laundry for me and my family, also handwashing my delicates. My expat friend is paying extra for that, how it is in your case?

In the UK? We don't have maids here (maid is a bit of a derogratory term in the UK), we usually say 'cleaner' or sometimes 'housekeeper', and no they normally don't do laundry at all. Some may especially those that are more carers for the elderly or very wealthy people who have whole teams of 'staff', but it's not usually part of an average cleaner's duties in the UK - cleaners usually just clean, they don't tidy, cook, wash up, run errands or do childcare. Cleaners may sometimes wash bedding or linens (towels etc) or do some ironing but washing your employer's underwear is a bit intimate or 'too much' for most Brits regardless of it you pay extra or not. If you want your laundry done as an 'average' person in the UK you normally pay for an external laundry service.

But I'm well aware from expat friends that 'maid' culture outside the UK/Europe is very very different, so you probably want to ask on the expat board or at least specify whereabouts in the world you are, because me saying my cleaner doesn't do it at all then a poster in the USA saying theirs does it for nothing then another in Singapore saying they pay $10 extra doesn't help you in Dubai or wherever you are?

You have someone hand washing your knickers? Oh my days!

Clara1312 · 05/02/2024 15:40

Of course, always had as I remember? Do you expect that executives are doing this on their own? We live in Singapore at the moment, before spent years in Peru and Ecuador.

Thank you

The salaries of the maids are all managed by the Butler and the Head Housekeeper, perhaps they receive a few extra shillings on Maundy Thursday if they have worked exceptionally hard.

I would expect everyone to want to wash their own underwear if it has to be hand washed. I would be embarrassed personally to have someone handwash my underwear. I would pay to be able to do it myself.

bradpittsbathwater · 05/02/2024 23:29

I'd never want someone else to handwash my underwear. How weird.

bradpittsbathwater · 05/02/2024 23:32

I know many successful people and I bet they wash their own knickers

Clara1312 · 06/02/2024 07:13

And i feel very relaxed with that...delicate hosiery and lingerie have to be handwashed.

I disagree
I use the hand-wash setting on my washing machine instead. Life is too short to hand wash clothes

This is not real….

That’s what I thought! A bit of a fetish methinks.

A dowager duchess in 1850 is somehow accessing Mumsnet.

Anyone else would, at best, have said "whoops, this is housekeeping, of course I should be on the expat board, how embarrassing."

bradpittsbathwater · 06/02/2024 07:37

Whatever floats your boat I guess

And at worst they would be delighted to be having a coversation about underwear!🤔

Anything washed in Singapore is going to be bleached within an inch of its life

mitogoshi · 06/02/2024 07:47

@Clara1312

Yes executives do their own washing here in Britain! And cleaning and cooking. Dp is ceo of a multinational business and he vacuumed yesterday.

Who on earth wants someone to hand wash their underwear? That's quite bizarre.

Clara1312 · 06/02/2024 07:59

Not really. Try to wash in machine nylon hosiery, i mean real nylon like Gerbe or Cervine. You will ruin them very quick

I don't even want our cleaner to empty the bathroom bin as it's a bit gross. She has put a wash on before but I wouldn't want or expect her to wash my pants by hand! But then most of my knickers are from Tesco! I'd wash my own though.

LemmysBullet · 06/02/2024 08:09

I think someone is pulling our leg.

Summerdew · 06/02/2024 08:10

Meh just take them in the shower with you if you want them hand washed (obvs not to wear in the shower but wash them out whilst you’re in there), tip picked up from French flat mate at uni.

Ewoklady · 06/02/2024 08:11

You are assuming that the op showers herself.

bradpittsbathwater · 06/02/2024 08:15

She doesn't shower. She has the butler pour goats milk in the golden tub for her.
