How often do you clean your duvet?

I’ve just taken my superking duvet to the launderette for cleaning and my friend thinks I’m mad for doing so!
She has never cleaned her duvet in all the years she’s had it so I wondered how often you cleaned yours?

I take ours to the launderette once a year (spring). The covers are changed weekly, and we’re clean folk, so I reckon that’s enough.

Whatwouldnanado · 04/02/2024 19:11

Our king size feather and down one goes to the laundry twice a year, around June and before Christmas. Kids’ single size are machine washed and tumble dried more often.

GrandHighPoohbah · 04/02/2024 19:11

I wash mine at the change of the seasons, so once a year each for both summer and winter. Summer ones fit in the machine at home, the big winter one I do in the jumbo machine at the laundrette. It costs £5, so nowhere near the cost of buying a new one.

Whatwouldnanado · 04/02/2024 19:12

Wish we had an edit button. Meant to say the laundress charges 25.00 a time to wash and dry the king size one.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 04/02/2024 19:12

Duvet covers every week, twice a week in the summer.

Duvets I just replace every one-two years. Pillows every 6 months, I cannot stand flat pillows. Angry

Tartantotty · 04/02/2024 19:13

If you have a robust cover cleaning duvet should be every 8 months or so, but depends on the tog etc. If you sweat a lot aim to clean every 2 months, Never dry clean - the chemicals are harmful.

darkmodeera · 04/02/2024 19:22

I never clean mine. Buy new one every 6 months and give the old one to the dog!

DinnaeFashYersel · 04/02/2024 19:26

Honestly- never.

lavenderlou · 04/02/2024 19:28

Erm, never! Hang them out in the sun when the weather is warm and dry enough and that's it.

specialk9 · 04/02/2024 19:28

3x per year - March, June & November - we change tog each time.

Ours is super king so has to go the dry cleaners. Kids x 3 (double) luckily fit in washer machine and dry really quickly.

Doesn't cleaning a duvet cost about the same as buying another? We get rid of ours when it feels a bit mingung, and it becomes dog bedding for a year or so afterwards

Very much depends on the duvet. Mine cost around £700 for winter and summer ones, but they are fabulous, go in the washing machine and will last a lifetime.

I have replaced all my duvets with night owl coverless duvets from the fine bedding company. They go in the washing machine, even the king size ones. Wash them every couple of weeks. No annoying duvet cover to put back on. Such a game changer.

I've done that with my duvet too.

Nonplusultra · 04/02/2024 19:36

The kids synthetic ones get a wash every few months. Ours are down and I just give them a good airing outside when they’re changed seasonally . It hasn’t occurred to me to wash them, or that I could.

itsmyp4rty · 04/02/2024 19:44

Never, wouldn't even occur to me.

SecondUsername4me · 04/02/2024 19:45

I don't, but at least once a month they all get hung on the line on very sunny breezy days to air out. Sheets changed every 7-10days.

scrivette · 04/02/2024 19:48

Never occurred to me to me to do so.

Wow. And how many geese have to die to make your duvets - just to end up in a landfill...

I just put mine through a cold wash in my washing machine once a year or so.

@PaminaMozart

I'm guessing if the poster thinks buying & cleaning the duvet cost about the same, it's synthetic.

I buy synthetic as I don't want ANY Birds suffering/dying for my duvet.

@salcombebabe when I change summer/winter. Summer gets washed in the summer too if I think it's been used much, as it fits in the washing machine. It mostly sits in a chair decorating the room as I usually just have a sheet on the bed.

salcombebabe · 04/02/2024 20:21

I should have said I do mine every year, if it was able to fit in the washing machine I’d probably do it a couple of times a year (maybe 🤣) There’s only me who sleeps under it and I use it all year round.

OP posts:
salcombebabe · 04/02/2024 20:25

Mine’s synthetic but a good one so, while it’s pricey to get it cleaned, I just can’t chuck it into landfill when it’s still perfectly good to use

Ah, you see ours cost about twenty quid. I did, however, pay over a hundred quid for my pillow. I want to be buried with it for that price.

PSEnny · 04/02/2024 20:54

I have coverless so every week to ten days

WTF? No one needs to kill an animal for a fucking duvet.
Use them for however long till I deem they have been sweated on enough and then, because it does indeed cost as much to get them laundered as it does to buy new anti allergy ones, they go to our local Greyhound Rescue, where they are used til they fall apart.

IloveAslan · 04/02/2024 22:29

Never. I air them on the clothes line when I switch them over from summer to winter, winter to summer. Mine are down/feather and wool.

CuntRYMusicStar · 04/02/2024 22:32

We use a comforter that fits well in the washing machine and tumble dries if necessary so I wash mine every week when I change the bedding. It's the best part of having a comforter tbh!

Copperoliverbear · 04/02/2024 22:39

Of course you wash it.
Your friend is disgusting
